On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, the Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion had its annual Change of Command ceremony to announce the incoming Battalion Commander and Command Sergeant Major for the school year 2019-2020. As our honored guest, Congressman Mast gave an inspirational speech to the nearly 200 cadets. The outgoing Battalion Commander, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Veronika Patti, passed the Battalion colors to Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Simmons relinquishing her duties and responsibilities to the new commander. The elementary science showcase was held this past weekend at the Savannas Preserve State Park and the Oxbow Eco-Center.  With student work on display at both locations, it was a great opportunity for families and friends to enjoy learning about the students’ projects as well as visiting exhibit halls and nature trails. Ms. Sabrina Faniel, this year’s St. Lucie Public Schools Distinguished Minority Educator of the Year, threw out the first at Friday night’s St. Lucie Mets game. Faniel proudly represented the School District as she took the field.

St. Lucie County’s Assistant Principal of the Year and one of Florida’s finalists for this prestigious honor Samantha Piscopo warmed up to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the St. Lucie Mets baseball game.  She was accompanied by family and friends for an exciting evening of baseball on Thursday, April 25.

Mr. Luke Hall and The Symphonic Band 1 of Treasure Coast High School earned the Otto J. Kraushaar Award, which is the highest award bands in the state of Florida can earn. This honor is given to bands that earn a perfect record of straight superior ratings from each adjudicator at Marching, District Concert, and State Concert Music Performance Assessments throughout and entire school year. This is the first time the Titan band program has earned this award.

The newly formed Lincoln Park Academy Speech and Debate Team can boast of great accomplishments during its inaugural year as all six members qualified for State and one member qualified for Nationals. Team members Aaron Address, Jennifer Barajas, Daphne Bellot, and Zyla Marc qualified for State in the Program of Oral Interpretation. Alyssa Monaco also qualified for State in the category of Declamation, and Donald Smith qualified for Nationals in Dramatic Interpretation. Coaches Debra Scherer and Stuart Address are proud of the team and looking forward to next year.

FL-20081 at Treasure Coast High School has been selected as one of 376 units worldwide to receive the 2018-2019 Air Force JROTC Distinguished Unit Award.This award recognizes Air Force JROTC units that have performed well above and beyond normal expectations, and that have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force JROTC citizen development mission for America. Congratulations to Margeaux McKinney for her District 9 overall first place win for the Florida Retired Educators Association annual 5th grade essay contest. She was recognized at the FREA luncheon today at the Heathcote Botanical Gardens and awarded writing items to inspire her continued interest in writing. This is the third consecutive year that a Northport Rising Star student has taken first place! Mrs. Tredor was also recognized for this achievement.

Put on your dancing shoes! The 11th Annual Dance Concert at Treasure Coast High School will take place on May 2, 3, & 4, 2019! Get Ready to relive the Legends of Yesteryear and the Present!  

The future is bright! Students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM classes created laser security systems today as part of their Laser and Photonics unit. Students are learning about reflection, refraction and the use of lasers in fiberoptic cable as well as their application in multiple career fields.

St. Lucie West Centennial High School students recently donated $2,500 to New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee to support mental health and addiction recovery programs for children and adolescents. The funds were raised during CENTennial Cares Week, a campaign promoting compassion and kindness in tribute of the students and staff that lost their lives last year at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. Mr. Morales, a local peach farmer, and Sandy White, representative from Titan Farms located in South Carolina, partner in marketing Florida grown peaches, and made their first presentation to a first grade audience at Lakewood Park Elementary.  The first graders were excited to learn how the peaches grow and created pictures to show how Florida peaches look.  As a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program school, students were able to sample some of the peaches grown on the farm Mr. Morales operates in St. Lucie County, just a few miles away from Lakewood Park Elementary. What a yummy presentation!

Tools for Teachers recipient Mrs. Kristen Lee was surprised by Channel 12’s Teri Hornstein with a check for $312.00.  Mrs. Lee is a third grade teacher at Morningside Elementary School. Northport community is so proud of our sixth grade Sharks and our seventh grade Stingrays who earned the Principal’s Honor Roll, A Honor Roll, B Honor Roll, and Perfect Attendance. The third nine weeks is always the most difficult, and these students worked hard to achieve. We congratulate all teachers, students and parents for working as a team and ensuring success and forward progress. Great job everyone!

Northport K-8 GiveBack2Kids Student of the Month show citizenship, outstanding progress in awesomeness, and are all around GREAT students! We thank our partners in education, James Monds and David Gornitzky (GiveBack2Kids CEOs) who help us honor positive attitude and remarkable behavior. This is our final GB2K award for the 2018-2019 school year. All students selected this year for this award and their families will be invited to an honorary banquet in May. In Ms. Bonilla’s VPK class at Mariposa Elementary, students have been discussing what sentences are, the parts of a sentence, and how to build a sentence. Students were given a sentence on a strip, completed some shared reading, and went around their tables reading each of the sentences. The students were able to pick up on the pattern of “I can” and decode words by looking at a visual. Afterwards, they rebuillt their sentences since they had been deconstructed.
