We are excited to announce the new Saint Lucie West Centennial High School HOSA officers. We welcomed the new officers in an induction ceremony and also had an ice cream social with prizes! The officers from the 2013-2014 school year had to step down and “pass the torch” to the new officers for the 2014-2015 year in a candle lighting ceremony to symbolize the changes in office from former officers to the present officers. Palm Pointe Chosen as a PBIS Model School

Assistant Principal, Deborah Iseman accepted the 2012-2013 PBIS Model School Bronze Award at the School Board Meeting on May 27, 2014. A  PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Model School is characterized by their consistent methods of utilizing data to better serve students and staff, utilizing creative and engaging reward systems, teaching PBIS to new students, extending PBIS throughout the campus and partnering with the community and parents, and including PBIS into daily activities across all available teaching opportunities. Pilot Club Donates $1,500

At the April 8th School Board Meeting, the Pilot Club of Fort Pierce donated $1,500.00 to the St. Lucie Public Schools Exceptional Education Department to work with students on a project with on-the-job training using technology. STAR Recognition

At the April 8th School Board Meeting, James McKenzie, Executive Director of the St. Lucie County Education Foundation was presented the S.T.A.R. Award for his help with the Music In Our Schools Month. He has been a strong supporter of St. Lucie County Public Schools. Congratulations Jim! West Gate K-8 goes to the Birds!

Third grade students proudly display their painted birdhouses which were made during their unit on Songbirds in Mrs. Palmer’s West Gate K-8 Elementary Art classroom. Students not only made birdhouses from recycled tissue boxes and Popsicle sticks, but also learn about a particular songbird by doing research for a display poster to accompany their bird house. Students will then give the new house to the birds in their back yards. Oak Hammock Recognized as PBIS Model School, Bronze Award

Weatherbee Elementary Receives Gold Award for PBIS Model School

Jennifer Avellino, Assistant Principal of Weatherbee Elementary, accepted the Gold Award for the 2012-2013 PBIS Model School at the School Board Meeting on May 27, 2014. Five schools from St. Lucie County were recognized as PBIS Model School for the State. Along with Weatherbee are, Bayshore Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, Palm Pointe Educational Research School and West Gate K-8, each receiving the Bronze Award. There are approximately 1500 schools across the state of Florida who particpate in PBIS, and less than 10 % are chosen as PBIS Model Schools. Congratulations to all our schools! Bacchus is Back…Another One!

We are delighted to announce that Robert Bacchus won 2nd place at the International Science Fair.  He is listed in the Medicine and Health category and his 2nd place award came with a $1500 cash prize. Student winners are ninth through twelfth graders who earned the right to compete at the Intel ISEF 2014 by winning a top prize at a local, regional, state or national science fair. The award was presented for “Creating Novel and Potent siRNA-based Biotherapies for the Treatment of Melanoma.” Robert M. Bacchus, 17, Lincoln Park Academy, Fort Pierce, Florida.  

Lawnwood Students Present a Solar System Throw-Down for the Educational Channel

Lawnwood Elementary kindergarten, first grade, and second grade science scholars presented a “Solar System Throw Down”.   Planets, stars, the moon, an asteroid, a meteor, the milky way and even the “black hole” were given bragging rights to explain to the audience why “each” reigns supreme in the galaxy. The students researched their information, wrote a monologue,  built the costume, and created a character with “attitude” to the delight of parents and peers. Forest Grove Hosts Annual Murder Mystery Dinner Theater

Forest Grove Middle School hosted its 5th annual Murder Mystery Dinner Theater titled “Going to the Chapel and We’re Going to Get…Murdered?”  Students wrote and performed an original “whodunit” play filled with comedy and suspense after studying the elements of literature.  The cafeteria was transformed into a reception hall for the wedding of Olive Payne and Chris P. Bacon, two teachers at the fictional Forest Grove High.  The bride and groom are distraught when members of their wedding party are dying.  Between scenes, the audience was entertained with hilarious commercials created and performed by the students.  The evening began with … Read More

Spring Concert at Mariposa Elementary

Mariposa Elementary recently had their Spring Music Concert. This was an “interactive” concert. Not only did the students perform, but the audience and parents also participated with singing, dancing, and playing instruments. What a fun evening for all! The concert included the Chorus, the Handbell Choir, and the Band. Northport Students Delve into Ancient Egyptian Studies

Northport K-8 Students in Tracey Healy’s fifth grade class were so excited to participate in a Mystery Literature Unit as an end of the school year promotion of an intriguing lesson. Students read the mystery book, The Power of the Scarab, the story of an Egyptologist and his daughter who uncover a mystery while working an Archeological dig. During the unit, students read a case summary, used an evidence organizer and built background knowledge of ancient Egypt to make those all important connections to the mystery. Snow Cones Served at Gaines Academy

Samuel Gaines Academy students in grades 3-8 enjoyed being served delicious, icy snow cones by our parents and volunteers.  How did they earn them?  Students attended all the days of FCAT testing without having to take any make-up exams.  We aren’t sure if it was the snow cones that motivated them or their excitement to show all the learning they acquired this year, but a whopping 99% of students took the test without having to take ANY of the exams on make-up days…that’s a lot of snow cones!

White City Elementary Fourth Graders Visit St. Augustine

White City Elementary ‘s fourth graders visited St. Augustine on Saturday to conclude their year-long study of Florida history.  Students were able to see history come to life as they visited the famous Castillos de San Marcos Fort and toured the city where explorers such a Menendez and Ponce de Leon once settled.

A Letter from the President

For the second year in a row, Marta Almiron’s kindergarten class at West Gate K8 has written to the President of the United States and he has replied.  The students are studying animals of the Arctic and wanted to bring the plight of endangered polar bears to the attention of  President Obama.  The students were very excited to receive interesting materials about the White House as well as a letter and an autographed picture from the president himself!  Pictured above are the students with the letter and photograph. Southport Drama wows audience with outstanding performance of Little Mermaid Jr.

The Southport Middle School Drama Department wowed audiences in 4 sold-out shows with their performance of “Little Mermaid, Jr.”  With a cast and crew of over one hundred students and volunteers, the show premiered fabulous costumes, a colorful set, and showcased talented singers, dancers and actors as they told the tale both “Under the Sea” and “Part of That World” above the sea.

Northport Sixth Graders Experience Living Voices

Northport K-8 sixth grade students and teachers extended the learning experience of lessons on the Holocaust recently through “Living Voices.” Living Voices was presented in the school’s media center at the behest of Tim Norfleet, SLC District Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator and sixth grade social studies instructor, Georgia Stone. Actress and Living Voices presenter, Rachel McClinton from Seattle, Washington coaxed the audience of teachers, students and a few parents through tears, anger and frustration and finally the sorrow of the Holocaust.
