Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Day

Saturday, August 20th, SLPS school psychologists and school counselors provided Youth Mental Health First Aid training for the city of Ft. Pierce Firehawks football and cheerleading coaches who coach youth ages 5-14. The purpose of the training was to provide the volunteers with tools and resources to support students that may be experiencing mental health challenges. The feedback received from the participants was very positive. Directed Drawing at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy

Students in Ms. Hoots’ Drawing 1 class teamed up to learn about composition in visual art. In this exercise, one student is the artist and works with their eyes closed while their partner uses descriptive language to describe the composition. The more specific the instructions, the more successful the blind artist is. Lots of laughs ensued!

Westwood Student Selected as Ambassador for UF’s Agriculture Education Institute

Junior Elizabeth Rufo was nominated by Agriculture teacher Mrs. Blankenbaker, to join the Agriculture Education Institute through the University of Florida. This summer, she signed a letter of intent to teach Agriculture Education at the state FFA Convention. Over the next year, she will be mentored by an Agriculture Education instructor and it will provide her an opportunity to have a direct link to UF and the Agriculture Education College after high school. She was also selected as an Ambassador for the program. We are so proud of you Elizabeth!

Westwood Makes LEGO Models

Students in Mrs. Munne’s World History class have been learning about the similarities and differences of Feudalism in Europe and Japan. As part of the unit, they are creating Feudal Villages of LEGOs to show the differences.

A Day with Deputy Brennan!

Today our students spent time with Southern Oaks Middle School SRD to experience what it is like to be a School Resource Deputy! Students were provided with a special badge and explored the famous patrol car. Students enjoyed turning on the lights, activating the sirens, and spoke on the PA system. It was a day of fun and exploration. Thank you Deputy Brennan for all you do each day for our students, families, and faculty! Hawks Soar!

Jaguar Battalion First Major Honor Guard

On Friday, August 19th, 2022, the Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Jaguar Battalion conducted a Football Honor Guard and Color Guard for our first home football game. We had a total of 78 cadets who came to direct cars for parking at the Honor Guard. Our first-year JROTC cadets had the opportunity to work alongside their leaders and learn how a parking detail works. Creative in Psychology at Westwood

Students in Mrs. Watson’s psychology class were asked to research and make a visual summery poster of one of six psychological approaches and career paths. Students collaborated as they got creative with their research!

2022 SLW Centennial graduate Olivia Kaes was honored Saturday by ESPN106.3 at Keiser University as part of their annual Top63 event. This was the first ever year in which they honored flag football players as part of their special night highlighting athletes from Boca Raton to Vero Beach. Olivia, who is Centennial’s all-time leader in attempts, completions, passing yardage, and passing TDs, was recognized as the #8 overall player in the region. Synergizing at Westwood

Students in Mr. Harrigan’s class synergized during a team-building STEAM activity. Students were challenged to build a tower strong enough to hold a marshmallow but were only given spaghetti, tape, and string. Students enjoyed getting to know their classmates as they worked together as a team!

Treasure Coast High School AFJROTC POW/MIA Ceremony at Florida League of Cities

The TCHS AFJROTC POW/MIA Ceremonial Team performed on August 13, 2022, for the Florida League of Cities Annual Conference in Hollywood, Florida, attended by all Vice-Mayors from the entirety of the state of Florida. TCHS Cadets were specifically invited to perform by our own Vice Mayor of Port St Lucie, Jolien Caraballo, who was inducted as the League President for 2022-2023. The team was honored to pay tribute to our nation’s heroes and received a standing ovation from the attendees.

Westwood Band is Ready for 2022-2023!

Band students have been practicing non-stop to prepare for Friday night’s debut at Westwood’s first home football game for the 22-23 season. Students have shown serious dedication through summer-long band camp and practices after school with Band Director Mr. Auguste. We look forward to seeing them hit the field!

Welcome Back Panthers

All Panthers attended a Back to School Assembly led by administration to go over Fort Pierce Westwood Academy expectations such as being fully present, academically focused, and treating others the way we want to be treated. In addition, administration reviewed the dress code, attendance, and tardy policies, as well as various school-wide procedures.

Another Successful Summer Program for our English Learners! 

Mission Graduation for English Learners summer program was held this year in Southern Oaks Middle. Incoming 6th through 12th recently arrived English Learners were engaged in English learning classes, grade level Math, English, and Civics. Students were given opportunities to develop entrepreneurship through a Graphic Design course where students created different products, a logo, and a vision for their future businesses. Students developed friendships and partnerships while they participated in different sporting events and activities. It was a great program! Students and staff said this was the highlight of their summer.

SLW Centennial’s Criminal Justice Student Completes Judicial Internship with Judge Maynard

St. Lucie West Centennial’s Criminal Justice/Law Academy student, Vincent Chin, was selected from all the local high schools to intern with U.S. Magistrate Judge Shaniek Maynard.  Vincent and Judge Maynard worked together from July 5 until August 5, and was an official member of Judge Maynard’s Chamber Staff.  This prestigious internship was based on teacher recommendations and afforded Vincent the chance to earn community service hours during his time as an intern.
