On Saturday April 13, 2019, Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s drill team took 32 cadets to compete at the State Drill Meet at George W. Jenkins High School in Lakeland, Florida. The drill team competed in five regulation events: Female Armed and Unarmed Platoon, Male Unarmed and Armed Squad, and Male Unarmed Platoon. The Jaguar Battalion Drill team also competed in six exhibitions: Female Exhibition Squad and Platoon along with Male Exhibition Squad and Platoon. The students of Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies were excited to raise money to benefit the March of Dimes.  Students were asked to make donations and they were able to choose a bucket in which to place their donations. Each bucket represented a different administrator on campus.  The administrators’ buckets with the most money received a pie in the face!  Students could also purchase raffle tickets to be chosen as a pie thrower.  Thank you to everyone at SGAET who donated to this worthy cause!

The St. Lucie County Fire District brought firefighters and fire trucks to visit a class at Fort Pierce Central High School.  The students spent the afternoon learning about fire safety, finding out what it takes to be a firefighter, and exploring a fire truck.  Thank you to SLCFD for making the visit so enjoyable for our students!

Northport K-8 middle school art class students created an art project with the theme Adopt Don’t Shop in hopes of raising awareness of the adoption for cats and dogs. Students created a colorful background collage using reused paper, creating a new purpose for the paper. The collage served as a symbolic gesture for animals because those who are adopted gain a new purpose in life. On Saturday, May 4, Village Green Environmental Studies School will host a community Environmental Studies Exposition.  From 10AM to noon, students will serve as tour guides for guests and will provide information about the school’s permaculture garden, raised bed gardens, astronomy night activities, solar energy kits, and weather stations.  

Northport K-8 Culinary Arts students participated in the 2nd Annual Culinary Cook Off. Students were asked to design and produce a dessert recipe using all food commodities from our food services or cafeteria. Northport students created a cake using 51% wheat flour and low sugar standards set by the USDA. The inaugural Male Youth Summit at Performance Based Preparatory Academy was a collaboration between the Bethune-Cookman University’s Male Development Institute and the Omicron Tau (Treasure Coast) Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Male students in grades six through twelve attended this event and participated in breakout sessions covered topics such as: dressing for success, grades, mental health, and time management.    

A tremendous honor was recently bestowed on our very own Fort Pierce Westwood High School Principal Mr. Joseph Lezeau. Last week during the high school’s JROTC Awards Ceremony, an impressive number of cadets earned awards for high academic accomplishments and were recognized for their citizenship, leadership, and community service.  At the close of the ceremony, CSM Frederico Dottin presented Mr. Lezeau with the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service. Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie’s eighth grade science teacher, Aaron Barnes, was just selected to represent CAST at Texas A & M University’s G-Camp through their College of Geosciences. The acceptance into this program is an extreme honor as only 50 teachers in the United States are chosen for this exciting opportunity! G-Camp is a 20-day field camp for teachers that provides first-hand experience with the principles of geology in the field. A new partnership has been formed between Lincoln Park Academy and The Concetta Viggiano Parry Foundation, a non-profit organization located in Fort Pierce, focused on philanthropy, volunteerism, and grant-making.   This foundation has graciously offered to donate $10,000 toward establishing Lincoln Park Academy’s first-ever wrestling team!  The donation will help purchase the team’s initial uniforms and equipment for the students.  In addition, these funds will support the acquisition of safety equipment and assist with the logistical support related to participation in meets and competitions.  Dr. Paul Gavoni, a member of the foundation’s board of directors, presented the check to the SLC School … Read More

Lakewood Park Elementary’s Science Club was in action sorting seeds and spaces to classify plants. The Club meets after school to dive deep into the state standards with hands-on activities.

SLW Centennial High School Criminal Justice Students in Ms. Baumgarten’s and Ms. Oliveira’s classes had the opportunity to learn about Emergency Management Systems in St. Lucie County.  Speakers included: Frank Amandro, Assistant Director for the Public Safety Department; Billy Weinshank, Emergency Management Safety Planner; Karen Kozac, Radiological Coordinator Assistant; and Sue McNichol, Human Resource Coordinator.  Students learned about different types of emergencies and how to respond to them, emergency planning and preparedness, career opportunities in emergency management, and how criminal  justice degrees and careers fit in with emergency management.

Many thanks to Northport K-8 7th grade Stingray students Dymond Wilkerson, Ariel Perry, Tyreese Morrison, and Jaivon Curate. These students showed initative and unpacked the entire book fair! They carried boxes, moved the carts, designed and organized the books, and really worked hard to make THEIR book fair great. This year’s book fair is designed by and for students at Northport K-8!

St. Lucie Public Schools is proud to announce that Morningside Elementary’s (MSE) Odyssey of the Mind Team won first place at the state competition and is advancing to the World Finals competition slated for May 21 – May 26 in Lansing, Michigan. Morningside’s team will convene with approximately 850 other teams for what is deemed to be the largest creative problem-solving competition. Mrs. Marsha Mimnaugh, Reading Interventionist at Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 15 Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The Endowment is a federal agency that, each summer, supports these enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions so teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines. Author Keith Lawrence Roman visited Mariposa Elementary this week. He presented his books to the students and talked about what it takes to be an author. He discussed imagination as the key to writing. Student Evan is holding one of Keith Lawrence Roman’s most popular books, I Sat Beside an Elephant.  Student Trey asked the author a question about being an author.
