The 2019 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. This sales tax holiday begins Friday, August 2, 2019, and runs through Tuesday, August 6, 2019. The Division of Student Services and Exceptional Student Education in collaboration with Sandy Hook Promise provided a Signs of Suicide (SOS) Training at Indian River State College for school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, and district leaders. The SOS program uses an educational curriculum to teach students to recognize the symptoms of depression and suicide, and can be implemented by existing school personnel within one class period. Lego Robotics and Coding Camp

St. Lucie County’s Oxbow Eco-Center 2019 Summer Camps were full of adventure. Children ages 8-12 participated in a Lego Robotics and Coding Camp. Using Lego Mindstorm EV-Three and We-Do kits, children worked in teams to complete animal and nature themed science experiments with robotics and coding. Some campers recognized similar problem solving experiments in STEM and Odyssey of the Mind courses.

Crocco Invited To Present At Carnegie Hall

Dr. Karen Crocco, SLPS Instructional Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts, was selected to present a session at the Carnegie Hall Summer Music Educator Workshop in New York City. Music educators from across the country came to Carnegie Hall to expand the impact of their work with young musicians. Dr. Crocco’s standing-room-only workshop entitled “Beginning with the End in Mind: Intention in Rehearsal and Assessment” focused on teacher learning to reinvigorate student creativity and musicianship, building a community of peers, and investing in one’s own artistry through creative activities and music-making ensembles. IRSC Tuition Assistance

Indian River State College (IRSC) has a long-standing collaboration with St. Lucie County School District through which school district employees are given tuition assistance. The tuition voucher allows employees to only pay for the first credit of each three-credit course.  IRSC provides a tuition scholarship for the remaining two credits.  I am pleased to announce that IRSC has established a defined scholarship allocation for the school district for Fall 2019, Spring 2020, and Summer 2020 which will include Associate and Bachelor level courses.   The District has been authorized to begin issuing vouchers per the normal process, effective now.  The school district is … Read More

United Way Back to School Event for Teachers

United Way of St. Lucie County will be hosting a Back to School event for all St. Lucie County teachers August 5th – 8th and Saturday, August 10th. Last year, United Way transformed their School Supplies for Students program into Tools for Schools St. Lucie, a free teacher resource center where teachers can directly shop for needed supplies for their classrooms. St. Lucie Public Schools Continues to Make Improvements

ST. LUCIE County, FL – School grades were released today from the Florida Department of Education, and St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) continues to make improvements.  As the second highest rated District on the Treasure Coast, SLPS is a high-ranking “B” District with no failing schools.
