Excellence in education has been given a big thumbs up at Northport K-8 School. Two seventh grade teams led the school in a spectacular showing at the Project Citizen Showcase. Many thanks to Thomas McDonald and the teachers who brought out the very best in our student teams! Job well done!

Planning to build a better future! 8th grade Northstars students visited the Robotics and Photonics labs at IRSC on February 15, 2019 for some hands-on learning. Students explored the roles that lasers and robotics play in our lives as well as some possible career choices in those fields.

Palm Pointe 1st Graders held a “Read to Your Sweetheart” event on February 13th.  Parents and families were invited to  celebrate all of the reading accomplishments that their first graders have made.  Boys and girls shared their love of reading with those that mean the most to them.

In honor of Black History Month, Forest Grove Middle School hosted a Black History Wax Museum. Selected students researched an African-American historical figure, created a poster, and gave oral presentations. Sixth-grade history students were afforded the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt and win prizes based on their knowledge of the historical figures presented to them. Figures included: Louis Armstrong, Mae Jemison, Whitney Houston, Mary McLeod Bethune, and many more!

The SLW Centennial High School NAVY JROTC continues to mentor the West Gate K-8 middle school students through a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.  This week, the Centennial Black Talon Cadets demonstrated physical training stretches and exercises and had the Boys and Girls Club children participate as well. Part of the mentoring process for the Centennial Black Talon unit is not only instilling principles of leadership, but showing the students the importance of physical fitness.  

White City Elementary students participated in a vocabulary parade. WCE students enjoyed this visually amusing event.  Students are using their creative skills and learning new words!                  

White City Students are celebrating Black History Month.  All VPK through Grade 5 classes are learning about the contributions of influential African Americans; see below for some beautiful student work samples.

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion achieved a score of 98.25% on its JPA inspection, allowing them to maintain Honor Unit with Distinction Award, represented with a yellow star worn above the name plate on the right-hand side. The day began with a Continuous Improvement and Service Learning briefing. Directly after each briefing, the Platoon and Color Guard drill evaluation was conducted followed by Cadet and Instructor Portfolios. Frances K. Sweet Magnet School was pleased to host Mr. E. Wayne Gent at our School Advisory Council Meeting on February 12, 2019.  Parents, teachers, students, staff, and community members received important information regarding the proposed referendum directly from our Superintendent.  They had the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. After the meeting, Mr. Gent visited the music suite and performed a solo piano exhibition that was impressive to students and educators alike!  Thank you Mr. Gent for your belief in our students, teachers, and community.

Andrew Gekoskie, Instrumental Music Teacher at Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) was recently selected as a Conn-Selmer VIP by the Conn-Selmer Education Division as one of the leading music educators in the country. The six music educators selected from throughout the country were able collaborate regarding techniques and current music education practices.  In addition, the VIP’s were able to tour the factories of Conn-Selmer which make brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments, all still handmade to this day.  The artisans making the instruments shared their techniques and displayed their pride in making exceptional musical instruments for students and professionals … Read More

Under the direction of Zachary Maes, the students from West Gate K-8 School chorus gave a special performance during the February 12, 2019 School Board Meeting. The students opened the meeting with a performance that was a treat for everyone in attendance.

Mr. Ocampo and Port St. Lucie High School were recently the recipients of a beautiful grand piano appraised at over $8,000. The piano was gifted to the school by Angela DiSomone, 89, courtesy of her brother, the piano’s owner, Joseph Falotico, 96.  The labor of moving the large instrument was donated by Arnoff Moving and Storage.  The students will enjoy this grand donation for many years to come!

The SLW Centennial High School’s NAVY JROTC was honored to provide the Color Guard detail for the St. Lucie School District’s Education Foundation “Night of the Stars” gala event on Saturday, February 9, 2019.  The detail was manned by Nicholas Gunnel (left rifleman), Ian Martens (Unit flagman), Julian Ortiz (Ensign flagman) and Bryson Laurent (right rifleman).

Southport Middle School students had a great time celebrating Literacy Week 2019. This year’s theme from the Florida Department of Education was “Spreading Literacy, One View at a Time.” The week began with a door decorating contest and homerooms were given the entire week to complete their project. Students started the celebration on Tuesday dressed as their favorite book character and ended the day with their families at a Literacy Evening of fun, games, food, and books from the Scholastic Book Fair held in the Media Center. White City Elementary students were recognized for their academic achievements during the second nine weeks Honor Roll assemblies.  Keep up the hard work!

The SLW Centennial Navy JROTC, in cooperation with the West Gate Boys and Girls Club, has begun a mentoring program.  The partnership hopes to instill great citizenship values of patriotism, self-sacrifice, self-discipline and attention to detail in our grade school youth.

On Saturday February 2nd, 2019, Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion attended its 25th Annual Military Ball at the Santa Lucia River Club. Male Cadets wore their Dress Cadet Formal uniform, and female cadets came in formal gowns. Our Jaguar Battalion Color Guard posted the colors to begin the formal portion of the ceremony. Commanding the color guard was Cadet Sergeant First Class Lawrence Moleon-Matthews, accompanied by Cadet Sergeant Shane Canady as State Flag Bearer, Cadet Sergeant James Mikovsky as National Guard, and Cadet Corporal Alex Nangle as State Guard. On Thursday, January 31, 2019, the SLW Centennial HS NAVY JROTC had its Annual Military Inspection (AMI).  The Inspecting officer was Commander Patrick Thurman, USN (retired).  CDR Thurman is the Area 7 Manager of the NJROTC program and oversees the NJROTC program for the entire state of Florida and over 60 NJRTOC units.  CDR Thurman was truly impressed with the professionalism and military bearing that the Black Talon Cadets possessed.  The inspection verifies that all NJROTC requirements are being met to include academics, marching and drill, physical fitness and personnel inspection.
