On Saturday May 4, 2019, Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion held its annual Field Day for the school year 2018- 2019. Each Company competed in several athletic events including: relay race, Jag Ball, soccer, capture the guide-on, kickball and dodge ball. Cadets were excited to show their skills against the other Companies in friendly team games. Everyone kept the games fair but competitive. Fifth graders at Village Green Environmental Studies School were thrilled to learn about and enjoy eating food grown from their very own vegetable gardens! Students at the school grew “yummy” cabbages and “delicious” sweet potatoes.

Morningside Elementary was selected as the Florida Elementary School of the Year and National Elementary Finalist for the NEED project. The students pictured (Ben Prohaska, Paul Mukhamedov, Wyatt Taylor, Luke Prohaska, Sincere Robinson, Logan McDonald, Tyler McDonald, and Ryan Ayvaz, along with advisor/5th grade teacher, Mollie Mukhamedov) will represent Morningside Elementary at the 2019 NEED Youth Conference in Washington, D.C. this June.   To find out more about the NEED Project, click on the link below. Faculty, staff, students and invited guests were witnesses to an event dubbed the CO2 Races at Port St. Lucie High School. Students in Mr. John Picchiarini’s class designed the cars using AutoCAD 2018. The designs were then 3D printed on site. Two by two, the cars were lined up at the starting line and powered along fishing lines by CO2 cartridges.

Fort Pierce Central High School JROTC cadets participated in the Wreaths Across America fundraising effort in the fall and raised over $1,100.  The dollars raised were donated to St. Lucie County’s local veterans organizations in an effort to honor the men and women who dedicated themselves to serving and protecting our country in the armed services. Immediate Past President of the Military Officers Association of America, Treasure Coast Chapter Bobbie Williams and Treasurer of the United Veterans of SLC, Inc. Ajah English, 12th grader at Lincoln Park Academy, is the recipient of the ” State of the Jobs” Scholarship in the amount of $800.  She is the only recipient from the district.  The scholarship was presented by Leslie Haviland, Director of Student Services, Keiser University; Brian Bauer, Career Source; Pete Tesch, St. Lucie Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County; and Tonya Woodworth, Career Source. Congratulations!    

Village Green Environmental Studies School hosted the Environmental Science Expo last weekend to highlight the school’s permaculture garden, square foot gardens, astronomy binoculars, solar lab and microscope center. Fifth grade students took responsibility to orient  guests about the variety of  plants grown, their origins, and their uses.

We are truly blessed at Northport. Pastor Brian, Deacon Rad, and others from our First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie community partners gave a day of service to our school. We are beautiful and wondrously freshly painted and cleaned. ❤ Northport appreciates all who supported the effort!

Mrs. Lawrence’s first grade class proudly brought their completed Young Author books to the media center.  Great job for innovative and exciting work and teaching the joy of writing!❤ Young Authors is a school-wide program at Northport. Common language and joyful writing brings the community together to help children release their inner writer.

Many thanks to the St. Lucie County Public Library for visiting Northport second graders. Jayme Kostandinu, children’s program specialist, and Brittany Ellis, program associate, brought news about the public library’s summer reading program themed “A Universe of Stories!” Students received applications for public library cards and listened to interactive stories to spur their reading initiative. The program runs from June 1 through August 3. Parents, take your children to the public library and check out their many programs and books.

Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie proudly showcased their talented students during the debut of Arts Week. Fine arts teachers collaborated to create and put on nightly performances. “Scenes and Sounds,” was the premiere of this year’s inaugural annual student film festival presented by The Media Arts Department which included transcendent music from The CAST Band. The Dance Department dazzled the stage with a showcase of various dance styles and techniques. The Elementary Music & Drama Department presented a lyrical and theatrical evening filled with tales from the animal kingdom and Florida history. The Key Club is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others and is supported and mentored under the umbrella of the Kiwanis International family. Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. New members of the Key Club were recently inducted for the coming school year.  

In the Applebee’s Above and “Bee”yond contest, Nikayia wrote an essay about Mrs. DeVries and how she deserves to win this award. Nikayia’s essay was chosen and Mrs. DeVries was the St. Lucie County Applebee’s Above and Beyond winner! She will receive $500 to spend in her classroom for the 2019-2020 school year. Lincoln Park Academy Theater produced Hairspray the Musical the last week of April 2019. This toe-tapping show was a delight to work on and to see. With over 100 students involved, this show was held very near and dear to many students’ hearts. A timeless story of equality and love, Tracy Turnblad soars to new heights with her hair and her willingness to stand up for what’s right. Over 1,200 attendees traveled through time with LPA to an upbeat world of hairspray and a world of changing dance.    

On Saturday April 27, 2019, 45 cadets from the Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion traveled to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay on an end-of-the-year trip. Thanks to all the support and funds provided to the cadets over the past several months, we were able to enjoy a day trip to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Ms. Alyssa Barbieri’s fifth grade students enjoy implementing the Three-Read strategy for math word problems that Math Coach Erin Albano introduced to them.  Multiple groups of students generated some very good questions which helped them focus on what was happening in the problem instead of just jumping to answer the question.  Way to go Mariners!!

Bayshore Elementary staff handed out nearly 250 bottles of water to thank their families for supporting the referendum.  The bottles were wrapped with a thank you message that generated smiles and reciprocal thanks.

Northport teachers, staff, and administrators celebrated the community support and passing of the education referendum. Thank you…Thank You…Thank You…to all who voted in favor of our children, our teachers, our security, and our future!
