Bayshore Elementary hosted its annual Literacy Night during Celebrate Literacy Week.  Students and families had a great time learning about literacy while participating in literacy games and activities.  Second grade student, Tyler Jennings, and his mom, Karen Jennings, worked together to set a literacy goal for Tyler while learning about additional resources at the event.

Volunteers and staff were busy on the campus of Lakewood Park Elementary School Saturday. Painting, repairing picnic tables, doing yard work, and sprucing up the reading garden was the welcomed work from the partnership with Christ Fellowship Church located in PSL.

What an absolute pleasure to host the Speakers Bureau recently at Northport. Northport is part of a coalition of St. Lucie County schools, spearheaded by SLPS Vice Chairman Dr. Donna Mills to bring talented and inspiring guest speakers to directly impact students and their achievement. The most recent guest was a talented, refreshingly authentic and fascinating young man named Samuel McDuffie. Samuel, originally from Washington, D.C., moved to Florida nearly three years ago. Mariposa Elementary first graders Jackson Smith, Trinity Andrews, Delsin Geliga, Tyler Rubenstein, and Alejandro Delatorre worked as a team to utilize their problem solving skills to create an amazing “moving” model using gears! They were able to figure out how to get a ball from one end to the other without having to touch it! The gears did all the work!

Parents and students met for student-led conferences.  Students explained their work and progress, and parents praised and asked questions.  A great time for all.   

Great morning of learning at Northport K-8 School recently as WPTV Weatherman Steve Weagle visited and intrigued students. Children in Kate Ploeckelman, Lorri Lamm, Kristin Schrader, Denise Fields and Jennifer Lusardi’s classes learned all about weather and weather calculations from the chief meteorologist. Students learned that to be a meteorologist, you need to love math, science and computer technology. Mr. Weagle spoke to students about weather forecasting and showed students how to make a homemade anemometer and how to study weather maps from satellites. News Channel 12’s Meteorologist Michael Ehrenberg came to Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition to speak with the fifth grade students to discuss weather patterns. He explained how using tools to measure weather helps meteorologists explain our forecast and provide us with our weather for the day or week. He also showed students pictures of what the studio looks like and how he is able to point on the green screen. Snowballs in all colors of the rainbow were whizzing through the air outside Weatherbee Elementary School this week. The PBIS Event for January was… a SNOWBALL FIGHT! Students spent their Mariner Dollars to buy into this annual fun filled affair which is always one of the most popular highlights of the WBE Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support program.

Sixteen participants gave it their all at Southport Middle School’s annual Spelling Bee. We would like to congratulate our 1st place winner, 6th grader, Sunana Singh, who will go on to the district competition, and our 2nd place winner 6th grader, Evan Puentes. Also, a big shout out to Mr. Jim Saunders for coordinating the event, Principal Nicole Telese, Assistant Principal Kathleen Manchester, and sixth grade teacher Kim Nicholas for being our judges. On January 21st, the Westwood Panthers JROTC Cadets were honored to assist veterans of the Ft. Pierce and Indian River community who have been awarded the Purple Heart Award. The Purple Heart Award is awarded to veterans who have been wounded in action while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The event took place at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum. The Indian River Woodcarver’s, headed by Lloyd Lasenby, designed and carved eagle-head canes. Each cane was personalized to each Purple Heart recipient.

Students from Miss Kazandjian’s kindergarten class at Weatherbee Elementary School enjoyed gorgeous weather on Tuesday as they visited the 4H Farm.

                                Jaguars March in the MLK Jr. Parade By: Sarai Narvaez The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion showed their pride at the annual Martin Luther King Junior Day parade in Fort Pierce. St. Lucie Public Schools proudly participated in the 33rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Parade.  This year’s theme “Renewing a Spirit of Empowerment, Engagement, and Non-violence” was reflected in schools’ parade entries which included float designs, band performances, cheer and dance presentations, and more.  This year’s commentators were the District’s own Dr. Donna Mills and Dr. Kevin Perry.

On January 7th and January 8th, Westwood’s Panther Battalion volunteered to assist at the Dog Agility Show held at the Fair Grounds. Cadets learned the basics of hosting and running a professional dog show while also becoming familiar with different breeds of dogs. The cadets hard work helped  when it came to getting everything set up and assuring that the show ran smoothly. When the Dog Agility Show is back in town, the Panther Battalion looks forward to helping again.

Garber Buick GMC officials presented a $10,000.00 check to Superintendent E. Wayne Gent, Board Members, and Fort Pierce Central Principal Todd Smith as a result of a successful November Test Drive for Education fundraising event.  The check will support extracurricular activities including athletics, the arts, drama and more. Fort Pierce Central Cobras, Garber administrators, and District officials look forward to continuing a positive partnership.

Talk about a “Joyful Noise!” That is what Dr. Kevin Perry brought to one lucky student at Northport K-8 School recently. Northport eighth grader Zachary Davis was surprised by Dr. Kevin Perry, the SLPS Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Fine Arts. Dr. Perry is part of a delightful group of local citizens called Bluebird Educational Productions. Dr. Perry, along with group founder, Darryl Bey, love music so much that they started a group called “Recycling In the Key of Education” or RIKE for short.
