This year Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition decided to make Blessing Bags and partnered with the Salvation Army of St. Lucie County to help the homeless in the community. This project was part of “Kindness Week” which was from January 6 -13, 2017 in conjunction with other activities planned  for Martin Luther King Jr.    Palm Pointe asked families to fill gallon ziploc bags with items people need on a daily basis.  Some items that were included in the bags were: bottled water, hand sanitizer, toothbush/toothpaste, tissues, soap, deodorant, shampoo (trial size), comb, chapstick, snacks, canned soups with … Read More

Dan McCarty Middle School participated in the MLK “Week of Kindness” Celebration. Bus drivers were welcomed with bottled water and snacks, parents received cookies as they picked up their students, and the staff was served lunch from Jimmy Johns. Guest Speakers Sandy Mack and Sophia Witherspoon gave inspiring messages to our 8th grade students. Students from Mrs. Mitchner’s ELA class also read original poems and essays on the theme “Renewing a Spirit of Empowerment, Engagement and Nonviolence.”    

Mariposa Elementary first grade students enjoyed a beautiful day at The Busch Wildlife Care Center in Jupiter, FL. Each class enjoyed a tour led by one of the talented educators on staff at the Care Center. The students learned about Florida animals and their environment. Most importantly, they learned the importance of preserving animal habitats and how to care for the animals. While on the tour, students saw an alligator and a crocodile, four species of owls, hawks, a bald eagle, a deer, raccoons, vultures, cranes, turkeys, and many more interesting animals. Mosaic Digital Academy middle and high school students participated in a FSA Writers’ Workshop with their instructor, Mrs. Amanda Kiefer, this week and became experts at using the State’s writing rubric to score sample writings from http://fsassessments.org/students-and-families/.  Middle grades and high school students will be given either an Informational or Argumentative Prompt on the FSA Writing Assessment on February 28th. Students at West Gate K-8 participated in SPARK testing to determine their level of digital literacy.  The focus of the analysis was on three major areas including: 1) Computing Fundamentals, 2) Key Applications, and 3) Living Online. One hundred two students received certifications for global digital literacy during this initial phase of assessment — that’s a success rate of over 80%!  Ongoing support will be provided to enhance skills for other students as well. Michelle Smith and Jenifer Scipioni were recently recognized by PNC Bank for their dedication and service to the students at Mariposa. Mrs. Smith initiated involvement with Grace Packs a few years ago and has been instrumental in continued support of this outstanding program. Grace Packs is designed to help students who are in need of food support. Every Friday, food items are sent home with identified children to augment the food available to them at home. Students in the fourth and fifth grade Challenge Program at Frances K. Sweet participated in the Stock Market Challenge sponsored by the Florida Council on Economic Education. Teams were competing to win first, second, or third place for the Elementary Division in our region. Members of the first place team (Josiah Fullwood, Yazmin Sosa, and Carmela Bustamante) each earned a $50.00 Papa John’s gift card and shared a $100.00 cash prize.

Christina DiMeo, an 8th Grader at St. Lucie West K-8 School, was selected as the Weekend Weather Kid by CBS12. Nominated by Barbara Ricks, her business education teacher, Christina conducted herself like a pro during the December 30th broadcast. Congratulations, from your SLWK-8 family!

Our school is so proud of our partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the positive influence and impact that our mentors and tutors project on our students and school community. The WPBF First Alert Weather Class Team visited Fairlawn Elementary School. Students benefited from high energy and engaging lessons about weather systems shared by the professional meteorologists at WPBF.

WPEC News Channel 12 Anchor Suzanne Boyd visited Mrs. Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School. The students made a tree map and asked great questions about Suzanne Boyd’s job.  She read them a book, How Santa Got His Job, and then they drew pictures and discussed what they would like to be when they grow up.

The Jaguar Battalion was cordially invited to The Daughters of the American Revolution’s annual meeting at the PGA Golf Club to present the colors. The color guard was led by Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Triplett carrying the national flag. Cadet First Sergeant Morgan Emerson carried the state flag while Cadet Major Savannah Cymbal and Cadet Major Kaylee Zuidema stood as their guards. After the color guard, each cadet had the opportunity to talk about what their future plans are after high school. St. Lucie Public Schools celebrates individuals each month for exceptional customer service with the STAR award.  This month’s recipients were from Lakewood Park Elementary and the Finance Department. Mr. Blount, a music instructor at Lakewood Park Elementary School, provides support to the marching band program at Fort Pierce Central High School.  After coaching his aspiring elementary musicians, he devotes hours supporting the older musicians in a voluntary capacity. Save the Chimps, the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary, asked for assistance during the holiday season creating safe decorations to be used for their Chimpmas Celebration.  Bayshore students donated recycled boxes and created paper chains that will be part of the chimpanzees celebration.  Pictured: Mrs. Reid, Bayshore Elementary School principal, donating the items to Save the Chimps representative.

Congratulations to the Ft. Pierce Westwood HS Teams of Cadets who competed in the Junior Leadership and Academic Bowls. The Academic team consisted of Cadets Andrews, Loschin, Soto, Flores, and the alternative cadet Rigsby. The Leadership team consisted of Cadets Payen, Egan, Lovell, Ocampo, Hartley, and Reese. Out of the 1,308 teams that participated across America to include Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Guam, and DOD Schools across the world; they’ve earned the bragging rights to say both teams will be moving on to Level 2.  The next level of the competition will be held February 1-15.
