Northport K-8 students had the amazing opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. over spring break. Almost forty students, along with teachers, Thomas McDonald, Angela Elliott, Andrew Mackenzie, and parent chaperones were overwhelmed by the profound history and primary source learning opportunity. Students visited Arlington National Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, United States Capitol, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the White House, Smithsonian Museum of American History and so much more. LUCIE COUNTY – Fort Pierce Westwood High School has earned the first College Board AP®Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have expanded girls’ access in AP Computer Science courses. On Thursday March 7th, 2019, select cadets from the Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Raider Team went to Southport Middle School. Seven Cadets: Cadet Corporal Mayoliv Hernandez, Cadet Captain Mathew Simmons, Cadet Sergeant First- Class Edward Cook, Cadet Corporal Alexis Wilson, Cadet Sergeant Justin Bennet, Cadet Major Joleen Kalinowski, and Cadet Corporal Emma Lewiston joined Southport’s gym class periods 5, 6, and 7. Congratulations to the Lincoln Park Academy Odyssey of the Mind team! On March 9, 2019, LPA competed in the regional tournament at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach. It was the first time in five years a Division 2 team entered the competitions. The team members are headed to the Florida State Tournament on the campus of the University of Central Florida on April 6, 2019. Lakewood Park Elementary hosted their first Drive-in Movie Night sponsored by the PTO. Students created their own cars and left nothing to the imagination.  Great job students!

On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, the Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion participated in its annual Service Learning Project of retiring unserviceable American flags. Cadets collected worn, torn, and frayed flags donated from various public places to be properly retired. In the class periods leading to the event, cadets cut the flags by the stripes to prepare them for the ceremony. The students and staff of Savanna Ridge Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss Day on Friday, March 1, 2019.  The students enjoyed breakfast, guest readers, and a vocabulary parade!

Many thanks to the Noon Rotary Club of Port St. Lucie for the gift of brand new dictionaries for Northport K-8 third grade students!  Angela Hayle from ACCH Insurance Agency visited the school as a representative of the club to deliver the dictionaries. Students were thrilled to learn the longest word in the dictionary and the different ways that the dictionary can be useful. Thanks to Angela and the Noon Rotary Club — you do amazing work for our community!

Students from 12 high schools in St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties flexed their mathematical muscles in the annual Math Olympics hosted by the Indian River State College Mathematics Department. Participants competed both individually and as teams from Clark Advanced Learning Center, Fort Pierce Westwood, Indian River Charter, Jensen Beach, John Carroll, Lincoln Park Academy, Martin County, Port St. Lucie, St. Edward’s, St. Lucie West Centennial, South Fork and Vero Beach high schools. On Saturday March 2, 2019, four Fort Pierce Central High School students, Sarahi Fraga, McClintock Hoeffner, Luz Martinez, and Hope Thomas, won third place in the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association’s 19th Annual Management Competition, sponsored by the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality & Tourism. Fort Pierce Central High School’s Wrestling Team won its first Regional Wrestling Title since 1995. The 3A Region 3 Champs qualified 11 athletes for the state tournament. That is the most qualifiers in school’s 49-year history, and it ties for the most in St. Lucie County History.  Coach Seidel said, “It’s well deserved for the athletes that put their blood, sweat, and tears into it.  I am so proud of what they have accomplished so far.”  The Cobras will travel to the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, FL on Friday and Saturday for the state tournament.
