St. Lucie Public Schools’ own Assistant Principal of the Year, Samantha Piscopo, wrote an article featured in the March 7th issue of ASCD Express, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s (ASCD) e-newsletter. Published two to three times a month, this resource seeks to give educators practical, actionable strategies, and information from the most reputable sources—the colleagues and experts working in the education field. On Saturday, March 2, 2019, the Port St Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Drill Team competed in its AREA 3 Regional Drill Meet at Jupiter High School. This is the most important drill meet of the season because it determines if the team can advance to the state competition. Cadets participated in fourteen group events, and we are so proud to say the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion won 1st place overall and will be moving forward to compete at the state level on April 13th! Treasure Coast High School AFJROTC completed a 15-mile memorial walk/march on Saturday and Sunday, March 2nd and 3rd. The memorial march, entitled a “Bataan Death March” was done to honor those who survived and those who gave their lives in WWII during the fight for control of the Philippines. . After their surrender on the island of Luzon, the Americans were marched to POW camps hundreds of miles away. Many perished in the march. The AFJROTC unit completed a march from TCHS to Veterans Memorial Park and back to the high school to raise awareness in memorial to our WWII heroes. … Read More
Ms. Alyssa Barbieri furnished her 5th grade math students with a diner menu and $20. They practiced adding and subtracting to the hundredths place by selecting three items within their $20 budget – calculating both the cost of the items and the change they would receive back. Whether they chose the most expensive items or elected to spend the least amount possible, they had lots of fun while practicing their math skills!
The Interact Club from Treasure Coast High School reads the book Josh the Baby Otter to kindergarten students at Windmill Point Elementary School. This story is part of a water safety program that teaches children what to do if they fall into a pool.
Sophia Henriquez, Philena Maharaj, and Ms. Savela from Northport K-8 Culinary Program served tasty treats at the Port St. Lucie Community Center. Northport K-8 students prepared and served treats for the 2019 Citizens Summit.

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Bonilla’s students continue to work on sounding out words and identifying the individual letters of a Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) word. This week they discussed things they can build, and one of the items mentioned was being able to build words! Students were given alphabet blocks and instructed to build certain words by sounding out, after finding their CVC word, they wrote the following sentence “I can build words.” Next, they wrote their word and drew a picture. Students in picture are Iker Collao, Danella Sooknanan, and Rose Mault.
The Treasure Coast Inter-Agency Transition Council gives the Navigation Award to five people from the four-county area. It is given to those we are leading the way by navigating transition services for supporting the successful transition of persons with disabilities from school to post-graduation. Penny Scialdo, School-Based ESE Specialist, has always been a proponent of seamless, positive transition for her students. We appreciate all she has done for the students in St. Lucie Public Schools. A big congratulations to Penny for her outstanding service!
Fort Pierce Central High School art students and culinary students are working together to bring awareness to a community problem. For $15 anyone can purchase a bowl, fill it with fresh hot soup prepared by the school’s culinary arts students and when they are done eating, the bowl goes home with them as a symbol of all the empty bowls in the community. The bowls will be on sale at the Fort Pierce Farmers Market on Saturday, March 16th. All proceeds benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The Weatherbee Kindergarten Team was rewarded with a special whiz-bang, whatcha-ma-doodle, thing-a-ma-jiggity prize for having the most participation and most Seussical attire during the Hats Off to Dr. Seuss event on Friday, March 1st. Way to go Kindergarten Team!
What a stupendous morning at Northport K-8 celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss! Many thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters and new CEO, Stacey Watson-Mesley, SLPS Board Members Debbie Hawley and Troy Ingersoll, and SLC Councilwoman, Stephanie Morgan. Students at Parkway Elementary got to sample Sweet Potato Fries on Thursday during lunch. Students learned where sweet potatoes are grown, how fries are made from them, and the surprising health benefits they provide!
Northport fifth graders were excited to top off their unit on weather with a visit to the media center from Britley Ritz, ABC Channel 25 meteorologist. The students began the program with a water cycle Flocabulary review. The Flocab was titled, “I’m water, I make the planet blue!” Britley spoke about her fear of weather as a child, when she lived through a tornado. She went on to study meteorology and weather at Ball State University where she conquered those childhood fears. Part of what makes Northport K-8 community-friendly is their continued battle against bullying. At Northport K-8, students and families are educated to stand up against bullying in all forms. This year, thanks to two community business partners who help make Northport K-8 flourish, IDProducts Source and David Toth Construction, donated enough money to bring our students two “Buddy Benches.” The community cares about our children and these donations put real, first rate effort into community service and community action. Northport K-8 is so grateful!
Northport was so pleased to host Ary De Latorre from Dr. Cook’s Dental Office. With February being National Dental Health Month, students learned all about healthy sneezing, correct hand washing techniques, and how to brush their teeth properly. Students also learned not to share toothbrushes, how to floss, and how to eat to deter bacteria. It was a great learning experience, and we appreciate all the time spent educating our youngest students on proper teeth brushing. Thank you very much to Dr. Cook’s Dental Office!

School safety is a concern not only for parents, teachers, administrators, but also for students that attend school. When local law enforcement asked students to assist them in a school safety plan, they provided some high tech solutions. Later this spring, three Saint Lucie Public Schools: Morningside Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, and West Gate K-8 will each receive a Buddy Bench. A Buddy Bench is anti-bullying, and keeps plastic out of the landfill! It’s a brightly colored bench made from recycled plastic caps that’s also a ‘safe space’ – signaling when a child has a need, and teaches all of the children about the environment.
