At Mariposa Elementary, second grade students conducted science investigations in groups to classify the different kinds of materials by their physical properties by making root beer floats. Students observed and explained how the three states of matter went through a chemical change. When the (liquid) root beer was poured on the (solid) ice cream, it foamed up into a (gas) or bubbles. Students engaged in discussions with their teams explaining their observations using science vocabulary. This hands-on science investigation culminated the unit on Matter.
