Fifth graders at Village Green Environmental Studies School were excited to celebrate the completion of their reading unit on corn. Over the past few weeks, 5th grade has explored the fascinating world of corn through informative texts. They delved into its history, its significance in different cultures, and even the science behind its growth and uses. To celebrate the end of this enriching unit, they planned a special Corn Celebration Day! This event was a fun and educational culmination of all that the students have learned and experienced.  

This week, our PBIS team hosted an amazing breakfast of Panera, fruit, and Natalie’s juice to express gratitude to our dedicated teachers and staff for their commitment to recognizing and rewarding students’ positive behaviors. Teachers and staff distribute purple tickets to students demonstrating school-wide expectations and making positive decisions. Students in Mr. Hammond’s 6th-8th grade Gifted Math classes were asked to design a bridge that could support itself over 10 inches. The surprise was that these mountains had landslides, so rocks were dropped on their bridge to test the strength. Each group was assigned a role of site manager, designer, and two builders. After their construction and before the test, students watched the Tacoma Bridge video to show what happens when engineering goes wrong.  Students had fun testing their engineering skills and being taught a real-world application of mathematics!

Students in VPK-5th grade at Lakewood Park participated in their first Stop and Stem Early Release Day this month! Students researched, designed, built, and tested various prototypes.  Our Falcon engineers were hard at work and enjoyed showing off their unique talents and skills!

Friday, September, 20th, Fort Pierce Central hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration staff luncheon. Pictured above, Ms. Lyna Soler stands at her door, greeting students adorned in her native Puerto Rican attire before the luncheon. Fort Pierce Central’s Cobra Culinary Arts program put on a remarkable feast of traditional dishes and contemporary renditions of celebrated delights. Forest Grove Middle School’s Marine Oceanographic Academy Prep program welcomed an ORCA guest speaker. Students learned and discussed information about data collection for A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon.

Fairlawn paired their annual Title One meeting with a student success night for all families. Parents learned what a day in the life of their child is like in school and how they can support their student’s learning both in school and at home. Families had pizza and a great night of learning.

Thirteen Folds of Glory holds high significance to our armed forces. This tradition requires the U.S. American Flag to be lowered and systematically folded into a tight triangle. TCHS ROTC Cadets explained that this triangle shape is symbolic of honorable values such as liberty and sacrifice. The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has announced the new members of the 2024-2025 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). This year, the FHSAA will be welcoming in nine new students into the committee, along with seven returning members. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was established in 2008. The committee serves as a critical link in identifying topics, issues, and concerns that face the student-athletes of the State of Florida. For the first time in a number of years, we have our first Centennial Choir All-State member. Ariana Finley tested and auditioned at our regional site. She scored high enough that she will be in the Mixed Chorus representing our school this January in Tampa, performing with the top vocalists of our state. Second grade students in Mrs. Barthell’s class started their day with a nutritious and mathematical breakfast of champions! Students used their favorite cereals to make arrays. They completed the arrays based off of repeated addition and multiplication equations.

Gifted students in Mrs. D’Andrea’s class read the difference of how the brain works versus machines. Groups made the connection to how we can solve a problem in different ways and get the same results! The groups were given 4 multiplication equations and needed to show 2 different methods to solve each problem. Before collaboration happened, students came up with examples independently. Students were able to refer back to their Interactive Notebooks and Class Anchor Charts to review previously taught methods.
