Students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School had the unique opportunity to meet with Mr. John T. Reid, a Senior Admission Counselor from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York. This visit was particularly impactful for students identified as deaf and hard of hearing. They were presented with information that could significantly influence their academic futures. Great things are happening at Forest Grove Middle School! Our 6th grade Marine Oceanographic Academy students identified different habitats such as the habitats in the Indian River Lagoon, the near-shore waters, and the Oculina reef. Students also participated in a scavenger hunt, examining the 6 different tanks modeling the different habitats searching for the marine organisms that occupy each. In addition, the students had an inside tour of how the aquarium cares for their organisms. Forest Grove Middle School had over 400 students participate in our Nacho Average Student celebration. What does this mean for our school and our students? It means that these students were either proficient (Level 3,4,5s) and/or made significant gains from the PM1 to the PM2/Mid-Year assessments. This week SLW Centennial’s Outboard Marine class embarked on an educational field trip to the Ft. Pierce Marina – River Walk. The trip included 24 enthusiastic students who were eager to learn more about their industry of interest. The visit included the presence of Ft. Pierce’s Mayor Linda Hudson, adding a special touch to the event. Students had the unique opportunity to speak with professionals from various marine-related fields. Ms. Bosque’s fifth-grade students are comparing and contrasting the basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases, such as mass, volume, color, texture, and temperature.  They measured and compared objects and materials based on their physical properties including mass, shape, volume, color, hardness, texture, odor, taste, and attraction to magnets.  The students enjoyed working together and recording their research in the lab journals.  Also, during this physical science experiment, the students learned about changes in matter.  By the end of the activity, the students were able to describe the physical changes water undergoes as it is heated and/or cooled. .  

Our annual Black History Month celebration transformed the Fort Pierce Central auditorium into a vibrant showcase of culture and achievement this past Friday, welcoming over 800 attendees including students, faculty, staff, district personnel, board members, and distinguished guests. Black History Month, observed each February in the United States, originated from “Negro History Week” established by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Weatherbee second graders showcase their talents! Recently, the whole grade participated in and voted for the best entries in their coloring contest honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. With just over 100 second graders at Weatherbee Elementary, each student colored a page for the competition. All of the six second-grade classes then voted on a winner from each class. Administration even voted for the best overall in second-grade! FGMS 1st Annual Purple vs Gold Basketball PBIS Event was one for the records! Fort Pierce Central High School Varsity Basketball and Cheer Teams did an amazing job representing the Cobra Nation. Mrs. Portee’s jaw-some fifth-grade classes were hard at work. The students were focused on estimating mathematical sums and differences. These magnificent mathematicians worked together collaboratively by using fraction strips to determine equivalent fractions. Our Sharks thrive through interactive activities that ask them to not only think critically but also collaboratively. During their Media Resource, Lakewood Park Elementary’s Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classes have been pen pals with some popular Characters (who look a lot like some very talented drama students from Fort Pierce Central High School).  Students exchanged cards and letters throughout the year and then went to Fort Pierce Central to meet their pen pal.  Characters put on an amazing show of skits, singing, dancing and games! Third graders in Mrs. Angle’s homeroom class at Village Green Environmental Studies enjoyed a “camp out” during class last week. They were celebrating their accumulation of 40 class cash for demonstrating Manatee Pride over the past few weeks and being exemplary role models to the younger students at Village Green.
