Lawnwood Leopards are Exploring Nature Ms. Frazier’s VPK students enjoyed an engaging and hands-on nature walk as they explored the school grounds with their collection bags in hand. The students eagerly searched for a variety of natural items, including leaves, sticks, rocks, grass, and pine cones, carefully observing their surroundings as they worked. Lawnwood Leopards participated in the Annual Black History Celebration All Lawnwood K–5 classes participated in the Annual Black History Showcase, engaging in a meaningful, schoolwide celebration of history and culture. Students worked collaboratively to create a display highlighting an influential African American leader, demonstrating teamwork, creativity, and pride in their work. Through guided research, reading, and discussion, students learned about the individual’s life, accomplishments, and lasting impact on society. Lawnwood’s Girls on the Run Team recently participated in the Annual 5K Celebration. Girls on the Run is a program designed to empower girls, meeting twice a week to boost self-confidence, enhance teamwork skills, and focus on emotional and physical well-being for girls in grades 3-5. K-5 Lawnwood students had a fantastic time participating in the Vocabulary Parade. This event was a wonderful celebration of our love for words and reading. It also provided a fun and academically focused opportunity for students to dress up in creative, homemade costumes. Ms. Jacob’s fifth-grade science students are currently delving into the fascinating world of Earth and Space. Completing a science project deepens students’ understanding of a scientific investigation, and it requires them to apply scientific inquiry, a multifaceted activity. The Lawnwood Leadership Team hosted a PM3 Parent Night where parents learned about Florida’s statewide standardized assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, which align with the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST), covering VPK through grade 10 ELA Reading and VPK through grade 8 Mathematics assessments, is administered three times per year as a progress monitoring assessment. The St. Lucie Education Foundation, Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County, and The Fort Pierce Rotary Club visited Lawnwood Elementary and provided a dictionary for every second-grade student. Our students will benefit from this generous donation of brand-new student dictionaries and free passes to the Manatee Center. Lawnwood Leopards Enjoyed Playing 9-Square in the Air During Physical Education Resource Class

During a recent PE class, our fifth-grade students thoroughly enjoyed this dynamic and engaging game. It was a great way to get everyone moving and having fun, and it also helped to strengthen teamwork and communication among participants. 9 Square in the Air is a fast-paced game that combines elements of volleyball and four square. During the month of February, students in grades K-5 learned about the contributions of various African Americans.  During this schoolwide celebration, classroom teachers guided students as they worked collaboratively to research influential African Americans like Denzel Washington, Mae Jemison, Simone Biles, Madame CJ Walker, Toni Morrison, Rosa Parks, and Dr. Martin Luther King.  They gathered information from websites and articles.  Students also created drawings, charts, and artwork to enhance their class project display board.  During the Black History Family Night, students dressed as their assigned historical figure and shared important facts about their person. Lawnwood Leopards Are Deepening Their Understanding of Physical Science

Ms. Bosque’s fifth-grade students are comparing and contrasting the basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases, such as mass, volume, color, texture, and temperature.  They measured and compared objects and materials based on their physical properties including mass, shape, volume, color, hardness, texture, odor, taste, and attraction to magnets.  The students enjoyed working together and recording their research in the lab journals.  Also, during this physical science experiment, the students learned about changes in matter.  By the end of the activity, the students were able to describe the physical changes water undergoes as it is heated and/or cooled. .

Mrs. Collins’ fourth-grade students are always eager to learn about community leaders.  In honor of Black History Month, Mrs. Collins invited Fort Pierce City Commissioner Curtis Johnson Jr. to visit her class.
