Students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School had the unique opportunity to meet with Mr. John T. Reid, a Senior Admission Counselor from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York. This visit was particularly impactful for students identified as deaf and hard of hearing. They were presented with information that could significantly influence their academic futures.

During his visit, Mr. Reid provided an overview of the college application process and highlighted why NTID/RIT could be an excellent choice for these students’ next academic steps. He explained that NTID/RIT offers a wide range of degree programs across various colleges on campus, including the College of Art and Design, Saunders College of Business, Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Kate Gleason College of Engineering, College of Engineering Technology, College of Health Sciences and Technology, and College of Liberal Arts.

NTID/RIT is renowned for its “rich cultural and linguistic environment,” offering full access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing by presenting all courses in American Sign Language (ASL). The institute boasts nearly 150 deaf and hard of hearing faculty and staff members and has the largest staff of professional interpreters—more than 130—of any college in the world.
