Fort Pierce Central’s Black History Celebrations

Our annual Black History Month celebration transformed the Fort Pierce Central auditorium into a vibrant showcase of culture and achievement this past Friday, welcoming over 800 attendees including students, faculty, staff, district personnel, board members, and distinguished guests.

Black History Month, observed each February in the United States, originated from “Negro History Week” established by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. This annual observance has since evolved into a month-long celebration dedicated to recognizing the extraordinary contributions, achievements, and experiences of African Americans throughout history. The celebration serves as a time for reflection, education, and appreciation of the profound impact Black Americans have had on our nation’s cultural, scientific, political, and social landscape.

The evening’s gala-style program featured stunning performances by our talented students, faculty, and staff, who paid tribute to Black history through musical performances, creative interpretations of iconic sitcoms, and powerful historical reenactments that highlighted watershed moments in American society. Mr. Williams, serving as Master of Ceremonies, demonstrated exceptional leadership while emphasizing his commitment to Black Excellence and our school community’s values. We were especially honored to welcome two distinguished Fort Pierce Central alumni as our guests of honor: brothers Dr. Leon Hendley (Class of ’73) and Dr. Robert Hendley III (Class of ’77), both accomplished cardiologists whose achievements inspire our current students to pursue excellence in their own aspirations.

Following the main program, attendees gathered in the beautifully decorated Cobra Cafe for a Black History Month luncheon that celebrated African American culinary traditions and cultural heritage. The event’s remarkable success would not have been possible without the exceptional leadership of Mrs. Leroy and Mrs. Kelly, who coordinated the celebration, along with the dedicated members of the Sunshine Committee who believe in upholding and honoring this Cobra tradition. Thank you to the entire FPC Cobra Culinary Arts faculty and students who invested countless hours in preparation to make this a celebratory feast to remember! This celebration stands as a testament to our community’s commitment to honoring the rich tapestry of Black history and its enduring influence on American society.
