In honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21, 2016, Ms. Woodard, the mother of one of our 1st grade students, Emily Tustin, came to St. Lucie Elementary this week to read to the students a story where the main character is a boy who has Down Syndrome. Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts fourth and fifth graders were pleased to host special guests from South Africa on Friday, March 18. The South Africa team shared about the culture, wildlife, economy, and schools of South Africa. Students enjoyed this opportunity to learn about another culture and even sang and danced!
Mrs. Ridle, media specialist, explained to Shirley Gomez that when reading graphic novels, it’s important to ‘read’ the pictures AND the words. The picture of the map shows that the location of the popular graphic novel, Sunny Side Up, takes place in our hometown! If we hadn’t looked closely, we would have missed that really cool detail!
Ms. Strunk’s 2nd grade class drew clock faces on their desks with white board markers. The students used licorice hands to show the times that Ms.Strunk wrote on the board. The students had so much fun!
Allapattah Flats K-8 Second Graders are bursting with text features in informational texts! Students are paired with partners to rotate around the room with non-fiction texts. Students took turns answering questions about specific text features such as captions, subheadings, and bold key words. Students gave examples of each text feature, how it helped them, and where they found them within the text.
These choir members participated in the All County Honors Choir held March 15th. We are very proud of them!
Treasure Coast High School Junior Aaliyah Brown is competing in the community service division of the Florida Public Service Association. Autism has peaked her interest, and she has begun to work alongside autistic children of all age groups. She is working on the correlation between autism and reading. Reading has been shown to improve brain connectivity within students of autism, and she has been making strides in incorporating this into their curriculum. On Saturday March 12th, St. Lucie Elementary held its first beautification session, “Redress for School Progress” campaign. It was a success, not only because of the work done, but because of the combined efforts of the community to see this campaign through. Present were community leaders, caring parents, supportive students, and a believing administration and staff. St. Lucie County’s Commissioner, Kim Johnson, an advocate of this movement, has played an important role in the planning with administration. Gaines Academy Vice Principal Alex “Batman” Oge exciting the 5th grade students about the science expo and plans to make them Super Hero Scientists. For the next four weeks the students will have guest scientists conducting hands-on experiments and all fifth grade students will attend a science resource class each day. Gaines Academy is Powered Up about science!
Bayshore hosted its 5th annual Community Resource Night! Families that attended had the opportunity to learn about community and school resources. Valuable information was shared from Children’s Services Council, Kids at Hope, St. Lucie County Health Department, Hibiscus Children’s Center and many more local organizations. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department also provided fingerprinting services and hosted the Bike Rodeo to teach students about safety rules when riding a bike. FGMS Chorus sang beautifully in their first choral festival (MPAs) earning an overall ‘Excellent’ rating. A great start for these talented students!
Oak Hammock K-8 School – Belkis Madera and the 6th grade students of Oak Hammock School hosts the Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Child Survivors of the Holocaust from Palm Beach County were their very special guests and speakers. Thirty child survivors attended the Remembrance Day to share their stories and experiences with students.
Rebecca and Cody Mott from the Inwater Research group conducted a Treasured Turtles program with Gaines Academy 6th grade science classes. The program engaged, educated, and stimulated the students into thinking about the world of marine science and ocean conservation. The students especially enjoyed the hands-on artifacts and specimens.

The Singing Eagles Choir from Dan McCarty Middle School recently participated in the District 13 Music Performance Assessment earning straight “Superior” ratings. The choir received an “A” rating from all four judges in performance and sight-reading. In addition, the students were highly praised for their performance. The chorus is directed by Dr. Rolanda A. Jones.
Windmill Point families enjoyed learning important information about the upcoming FSA assessments through a fun night of family trivia! Families worked together to solve problems like the ones their children will see on FSA. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Drill Team hosted the 22nd Annual Area Three Drill Meet. Best school overall was determined by the combined scores of the male and female drill teams. Our drill team competed against 18 other schools, and earned First Place overall. The Jaguars did an outstanding job and will be training hard for the Florida State Final Drill Competition in Lakeland, FL on April 15th-16th. Congratulations to all of the cadets.
The Parkway Pirates had a great time as they enjoyed the games during Field Days!
