To celebrate National School Breakfast Week, Cafeteria Manager Maria Coellos-Mayz and Manager Intern Diana Crosdale dressed up to welcome students to school on Monday to highlight the importance of a healthy breakfast each morning. Students were definitely excited to enter the cafeteria on Monday and see what a wonderful breakfast the cafeteria staff had prepared for them.
Mrs. Michelle Smith’s second grade students from Mariposa Elementary were privileged to visit the Hallstrom Planetarium at Indian River State College. The children learned how to find cardinal directions in the sky to help them discover different constellations. Students also took a trip through space, learning about how the planets closer to the sun are hotter than those further from the sun. Did you know you could fit a million Earths in the sun? Northport K-8 School held a spectacular morning of Community Involvement recently to celebrate not only the birthday of Dr. Seuss, but also the 30th birthday of the school. Northport is so proud of the forward progress made by the teachers and staff as well as the parents and students. Five fifth graders from Frances K. Sweet had their Highwaymen-inspired art on display at the Highwaymen Heritage Festival. Alexis McEwen took the first place prize, winning a medal and money for art supplies for the school.
Congratulations to Trinadee, Aidan, Kyle, and Saniah, students in Mrs. Logue’s fifth grade class, for earning the A.R.T.S. Expectations certificates for outstanding leadership in demonstrating preparedness, respect, responsibility, and safety!
Mrs. Ebersole’s 4th grade and Mrs. Eaker’s Kindergarten class met for the first time to introduce themselves to their new buddies. Students were given puzzle pieces that led them to their buddy when they found the match. They then exchanged notes and got to know each other. Students from both classes are looking forward to their weekly reading time together.
The PTO from Parkway Elementary School recently organized a family get together at Chuck-E-Cheese! This event was great and the families had a chance to play games and have a great time together.
Faculty, staff, and students created a welcome tunnel for our incoming students and their families at the Freshmen Open House. The FPWHS band and cheerleaders boosted everyone’s spirits in our courtyard and the JROTC along with our chorus led the presentation with of colors, Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem.
Mrs. Nesbitt’s first grade class worked on sequencing events in writing. Students created a flow map using Eric Carle’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Students and staff were “Feelin’ Groovy” at our Rockin’ Family Night. Parents learned about websites they can use with their children at home. We also had Deputy Lopez from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department talk to parents and students about Internet safety. Students were also able to shop for books with their families in our Scholastic Book Fair. VIP readers visited several classes for our Dr. Seuss Day on March 2nd. Media Specialist Debbie Remington organized this event in which our “VIPs” read to our students and engaged in meaningful conversations about what they read. Students and staff were appreciative of the VIP guests who took time to read with them and celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. Fairlawn Elementary School made the SWEET 16 for TTM’s National Contest – The March Math Madness. This means that across the entire country, Fairlawn is in the final 16 schools! This contest allows schools to compete against schools around the country to decide who has the highest average of passed lessons per active student! This is a National Contest with thousands of schools participating!
REE’s PBIS committee hosted a Winter Dance this past month! Students paid 20 Otter Bucks to attend the dance during their resource time. Dancing and fun overflowed as students jammed to the DJ and enjoyed being able to hang out with their friends. Our fabulous PTO decorated and gave out candy. An event sure to be held again and again.
Frances K. Sweet staff held their annual Sunrise Stampede 5K/Kid Fun Run in beautiful Fort Pierce on February 27th. Dorian Newbern was thrilled to award the first place overall prize to fourth grader Raymond Coburn. He completed the course, which included running over South Beach Bridge twice, in 24 minutes and 17 seconds. All proceeds will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Students in Mrs. Irby’s and Mr. Tuner’s Kindergarten classes got a special visit in honor of World Read Aloud Day (February 24, 2016). Using Skype video calling technology, picture book author Stacy McAnulty read aloud from her newest book Excellent Ed. Students were able to ask questions and have them answered by the author. She then gave book recommendations to the students. A fun, engaging, time was had by all!
On Friday February 25, 2016, White City Elementary recognized students for the character trait of the month: Perseverance. When you persevere, you continue trying to do your best even though something is difficult. Wildcats, we are so very proud of you and know you will continue to do great things!
The Saint Lucie County Fair Association invited local schools to participate in themed displays. Following the theme, “Preserve the Fun, Recycle When Done,” Lincoln Park Academy received the first place award in the high school division which included a generous $1,000 cash prize. In a class discussion about why recycling is important for our planet and its inhabitant, the students came up with the idea that nature cannot be manufactured. Fort Pierce Central High School Team A was recently crowned the regional champion of the 19th Annual National Ocean Science Bowl. The “Florida Manatee Bowl” attracted 20 teams from across Florida in a competition that tests students’ knowledge on a wide range of chemical, physical, biological, environmental, and social issues of the ocean. The competition took place at FAU-Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and on the campus of the Marine Oceanographic Academy in Ft. Pierce. Ft.
