Students in Mr. Donald Logue’s fifth grade class were marine biologists for the week studying sea turtles. Thanks to the Inwater Research Group’s Traveling Turtle Trunk, they measured, weighed, and inspected “captured” sea turtles for signs of distress. Then they decided to either release their sea turtle or send it to a rehabilitation facility to receive treatment based on the evidence they collected.

Parkway was the recipient of $600 to support the purchase of a handicap-accessible swing for our playground. This donation was generously provided by members of the Port St. Lucie Moose Lodge.  

Northport participated in a wonderful community event recently to support Autism Awareness. Autism Speaks Walk was held in Tradition on a beautiful Saturday morning. Northport’s team called the Puzzlers had a wonderful turnout and several of our families took part in the event. Northport has particpated for two years and the teachers and families have stated that this will definitely become an annual event with an even bigger turnout and even more support. Northport K-8 School Advanced Band, under the direction of Brian Hoce, received an overall Superior rating at the Music Performance Assessments held recently at Treasure Coast High School. Nearly all middle school bands were represented at the assessments from Saint Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee and Martin Counties. Parents and students were thrilled to learn of their Superior grade and realized that all their arduous work paid off with the posting of the grades. Cris Martinez’s weather program from WPBF News Channel 25 visted Mariposa Elementary’s fifth graders. The students kicked off the weather program with a rap they wrote and choreographed about how hurricanes form. Next, Mr. Martinez discussed and interactively presented how tornadoes form and how they affect us in Florida. Rebecca Sampson was interviewed by Cris Martinez; she explained how much she enjoyed his interactive presentations. It was a great learning experience for our fifth graders!

Mosaic Digital Academy’s Christine Bourgoin (Grade 10) earned the bronze award at the 2016 Congressional Award ceremony held on April 3, 2016 at Palm Beach State College. Christine completed 100 volunteer hours: 50 Personal Development, 50 Personal Fitness, and a 2-day, 1 night expedition. Frances K. Sweet teachers and staff support Light it Up Blue for Autism by wearing blue on April 1st.

Satchel Joseph, the 2016 SLWCHS valedictorian, has been accepted into four Ivy League Universities: Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, and The University of Pennsylvania. She was also accepted by Georgia Tech and Duke. All of the institutions offered her substantial scholarships ranging to more than $70,000 per year. Satchel is leaning toward attending Princeton, which accepted a mere 6% of this year’s applicants. Here, Ms. Joseph is pictured with Centennial’s  Principal Andrea Popwell.

Mariposa Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team led by Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni competed in the Palms Regional tournament in Riviera Beach, Florida.  They competed in Division 1 for problem number 5 titled “Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends.” They were one out of eight teams that decided to solve this problem. During Spring Break, thirty Home Depot employees and volunteers enhanced the Samuel S. Gaines Academy campus with a Kids at Hope Garden. Volunteers installed an irrigation system, built plant boxes and fences, transplanted trees, and beautified the garden area with new sod and mulch. This garden will be a school-wide, student-managed initiative to learn how to plant, grow, and maintain a variety of crops. The SGA Kids at Hope Committee, in partnership with the St. Lucie Education Foundation Inc., applied for and was awarded a grant from The Home Depot Foundation to fund construction of this vegetable and herb garden. … Read More

Every leader has to start somewhere and Girls State has been the starting point for many successful young students. The Girls State program is a summer leadership and citizenship program sponsored by the American Legion for High School students between their junior and senior years. Port Saint Lucie High Jaguar Battalion’s Cadet Captain Kaylee Zuidema was one of this year’s representatives. During the program, the participants are first divided up into subgroups referred to as cities.   Sixty Forest Grove students got the experience of a lifetime on March 17 when they got to see the Miami Heat play at the American Airlines Arena.   After the game, students were able to go on the court and take a shot from the free throw line just like the players do!  This elite group of Bulldogs were nominated by their teachers for doing well in school academically and behaviorally.  Students also won a spot on the trip through PBIS events.   All of these well-deserving students will write about their experience at the game to share with the rest … Read More

Media Specialist PJ Price goes over and above to make learning fun at Rivers Edge Elementary. Turning science questions into a live Jeopardy game, 4th graders at REE did not even realize they were learning as they answered questions about animals, physical science, energy, geology, and matter.
