Fort Pierce Westwood’s Tuesday Leadership Club (TLC) met for their first 2017/18 service project. TLC members stuffed 50 donated backpacks with school supplies for Panther students in need. TLC is a student driven group which develops positive leadership and characteristics to enhance themselves, their school and their community at large. The students involved with this service project are Trey Doilvien, Kenneshia Murriel, Matilde Mendez, Vanessa Vazquez, Kristina Thomas, Alvin Paschal, and Pharah St. Louis. Happy Fall! Students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class loved working on a unit about apples. They measured, experimented, and used their five senses to investigate them. Jackson Mallonee, Elijah Josheph, Everette Robinson, and Tabitha Smith agreed that the best part of the unit was making homemade applesauce.  

Stephen Siller: Tunnel to Towers Run The Tunnel to Towers run is an event created two years after the occurrence of 9/11. The event symbolizes Stephen Siller’s final footsteps running in full firefighting gear from the foot of the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. It pays homage to the 343 FDNY firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on the ill-fated day of September 11, 2001. We were extremely honored to help Private First Class Kimberly Foulk, United States Army, to surprise her children after being deployed for the past seven months. Her children were in class when they were called to the office. Her son William was little anxious when he was called, but when he walked into the attendance office and saw the badge on her arm, he was overwhelmed with joy! The custodial staff at Lakewood Park Elementary were treated to a lunch and dessert for all of their hard work.  Not only do they care for the school on a daily basis, but they also supported the school and residents when the school was used as a shelter for Hurricane Irma. Thank you for all the hard work!

The Dads of White City Elementary enjoyed spending time on campus.  Our Dads ate breakfast, watched the morning show and learned about the grade level expectations.  It was a magnificent morning well spent with the Dads of White City Elementary.

Over the summer, Mrs. Nemeth, 1st grade teacher, received five tablets for her classroom through a Donors Choose proposal. Seesaw is a student-driven digital portfolio that empowers students to independently document what they are learning at school. Students can use photos, videos, drawings, text notes, links, and the recorder to show what they know. After publishing a piece about Fall, students were able to take a picture of their work and record themselves reading it. Families also have the ability to see their child’s work through the Seesaw app and respond with comments and likes.

Palm Pointe hosted their annual Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast on Thursday, September 28th. PPE appreciates all their bus drivers do each day bringing our Rockets to and from school safely! Each driver received a gift, enjoyed special drawings, a delicious breakfast, and hopefully left knowing how much we appreciate all they do!

Palm Pointe honors male role models in Dads Take Your Child to School Day! What a great event to honor our fathers and ask for their commitment to stay involved. Over 300 male role models brought their child to school on Wednesday, September 27th.   Twenty students representing Dan McCarty Middle School recently joined their voices with other middle school singers from around the Treasure Coast area to participate in the Four County Middle School Honors Choir at Indian River State College. The students were selected based on their musicianship skills and the recommendation of their chorus director, Dr. Rolanda A. Jones.

Fort Pierce Westwood began a new, school-wide PBIS event with their students this year.  The Principal’s Panther Praise 200 Club (100 Club for MOA campus) requires randomly chosen teachers and staff to identify students who meet our ROARS expectations in and out of class each day.  Ten tickets are given out each day to be distributed to students for R-respect, O-on task, A-accountable, R-responsibility, S-safety. On September 27th, SGA had a wonderful time celebrating fathers and caring adults who change the lives of our students everyday.  The morning started with an instrumental interlude by SGA music teacher Mr. Pena and students along with photo booth opportunities.  After a brief presentation and breakfast, the fathers and caring adults were eager to pledge to be more involved in their children’s education.

Palm Pointe faculty, staff and middle school students are all “fired up” because they had the opportunity to hear a powerful message about the importance of transitioning a growth mindset into the will to achieve from guest speaker Principal Baruti Kafele. Kafele, a nationally-renowned public speaker, author, and award winning former educator and principal, is a specialist in “attitude transformation.” His book, Closing the Attitude Gap, speaks to the importance of being mission minded, and developing the necessary passion, purpose, and drive to persevere through challenges in order to succeed in the classroom and in life. #mission ready    

Ms. Mellion’s 2nd Period reviewed simplifying fractions after teaching students how to relate division to fractions. Students were able to work in groups with whiteboards for better understanding. They were excited to be able to tell the difference between simplified fractions and not simplified to smallest form fractions. Students are also learning about creating expressions with and without solving.  

Southport Middle School faculty, staff and community members welcomed students back to the 2017-2018 school year with our annual Tunnel of Hope celebration!
