Sailor Sabol, a student at Saint Lucie West Centennial High School, has been selected to represent Port Saint Lucie, Florida as a National Youth Delegate to the 2018 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University. Sabol joins a select group of 300 students from across the country to participate in an intensive, week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation. Sabol was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies. SHELDON RILEY AND JAMES WEICHMANN of Fort Pierce Westwood High School captured 3rd place in the Fresh from Florida Student Chef Cook-off Finale in Tallahassee, FL. Sheldon and James prepared their Raw Kale Pasta Salad with a Strawberry Vinaigrette and Chipotle Chicken. The trip to Tallahassee was a great learning experience for the entrepreneurial chefs. The day was highlighted with a tour of the capital and Ag Day Exhibit with Chef Paula.

On February 10th and 11th, the Jaguar Battalion participated in the annual Port St. Lucie Botanical Garden Plant Sale. From 9:00 am to 4:00 pm both days, a Battalion cadet helped plant shoppers carry multiple plants or heavy plants to their vehicles. Participation in this event was a win-win for the Botanical Gardens as well as for the cadet who earned community service hours and donations for the Battalion.

The fourth season of Girls on the Run (GOTR) at Southport is underway! Our team of 15 brave and beautiful girls will participate in Heart & Sole, a physical activity-based positive youth development program that addresses the social, mental and emotional challenges particular to middle school girls. The 10-week program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The 24th Annual Jaguar Military Ball took place on January 26th. This event, valued by the battalion, was an outstanding evening highlighted with  c/ MAJ Syanna Graham as madam vice and Principal Adrian Ocampo as a guest speaker. Both the  food and the music were excellent. Cadets, parents, and guests enjoyed an evening of dancing. The Battalion eagerly anticipates next year’s Ball.

Fifth grade students at Lakewood Park Elementary are getting a boost to learning as they are participating in the 21st Century after school tutorial program.  Students are engaged in project based learning with an emphasis on grade level expectations that will help them succeed academically.  This program runs Monday through Friday from 3:15 to 5:15.     

Students in Mrs. Saunders’ 5th grade present Native American Projects.  Fifth graders enjoyed presenting Native American projects. As part of their Reading and Social Studies standards, each student researched a tribe, wrote about the culture, then created a board or diorama reflecting the unique attributes they discovered.  Pictured: Zachary Cobb, Jonah McCrory, and Victoria Serrano Melendez.  

Southport Middle School eighth grade students participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, an assessment also known as NAEP or The Nation’s Report Card. According to NAEP, the results of the assessment are a way to show what students nationwide know and can do in different subjects. The results provide educators, policymakers, elected officials and parents across the country with invaluable information regarding what students their age are learning. The students who completed the science portion of the NAEP test were especially engaged and enjoyed the interactivity of the assessment experience. Port St. Lucie High School Jaguars celebrate with Ryan Downing as he signs a letter of intent to play Jacksonville Dolphins Football for the University of Jacksonville. He is joined by his Mother, Grandparents, and Coach Dent. Many teammates, teachers, and staff shared in the celebration.

The Port St. Lucie High School’s Drill Team competed in the W. T. Dwyer High School Drill Meet on Saturday February 3rd.  Competing in platoon, squad, and exhibition drill and winning in several categories, the Jaguars placed in the top three. The Jaguars will continue to practice for their next meet at Seminole Ridge High School Drill meet.

A WORD FROM MS. MARINO: My 2nd grade RTI class from Allapattah Flats K8 School has been busy reading and finding evidence in text. After reading The Science of Snow, Snowflake Bentley and Freddy Flake’s Water Cycle Journey, I decided that these students were ready to be real investi-“gators” on the concept of snow. In December, Allapattah Flats welcomed motivational speaker and Sports Photographer, Ned Schuster of the Speakers Bureau.  Mr. Schuster was introduced by Dr. Donna Mills who began the Speakers Bureau four years ago.  Mr. Schuster has a passion for reaching students by sharing his real life story and impressing upon them that in life you can overcome many of the obstacles that may come your way.   Mr. Schuster shared some real life struggles concerning some of his own educational challenges as a child and his determination alongside his family’s determination to work through those problems.  Mr. Schuster’s determination blazed the … Read More

Britley Ritz, WPBF Meteorologist, received a warm welcome from White City Wildcats before she even stepped foot on campus.    She recently visited the school to share an interactive and informative weather lesson on weather systems that included thunderstorms, tornadoes, tropical systems, and rip currents — all very relevant to students in South Florida.  A big shout out to WPBF and their on-going support to stay involved with our students!                  

Lincoln Park Academy Senior Haniya Shareef has been named a finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Fort Pierce Central High School students recently attended National Portfolio Day in downtown Miami – an event specifically for visual artists and designers. Instructor Heather Blackmon championed the opportunity for twelve of her advanced Drawing, Painting, and Photography students to attend and showcase their portfolios, which included mixed medium, photography, digital art, illustration, drawing, and painting.   According to Blackmon, National Portfolio Day is an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.  Representatives review student … Read More

Fort Pierce Central High School Dual Enrollment students participated in a fieldtrip championed by Instructor Robert Ott to Indian River State College. Once on the college campus, Katie Williams and her staff provided valuable information including library instruction and academic services for students. Dozens of Lincoln Park Academy students, both alumni and current students, were part of the more than 100 runners and volunteers who came out to support and run in the 12th Annual Run for the Coach 5K, which took place Jan. 20, 2018 beginning at the RiverWalk Center in Fort Pierce.  The 3.1 mile course, through downtown Fort Pierce area and across the South Beach Bridge, is run every year, in memory of former Lincoln Park Academy teacher and coach Wayne Cross, who passed away in 2006, and in honor of teachers and coaches everywhere.
