What a wonderful morning at Northport recently. So many dads, grandpas, big brothers and families participated in the SLPS districtwide event. Northport realizes that we need family participation to help us bring the very best learning environment to the children. Many thanks to all who participated. It was just wonderful to see and greet all the dads for a terrific breakfast in the media center. Many thanks to all who participated and special thanks to the Northport Culinary department and School Secretary Louise Robinson as well as Cafeteria Manager Bev Yates. Job well done to all who attended!

Caroline Duran, Art Teacher at Lincoln Park Academy has been recognized by the Florida Art Education Association (FAEA) as the 2017 New Professional Award winner. The FAEA program recognizes individuals who have achieved the highest level of professionalism in art education and shows appreciation for their contribution to the association and its mission. Ms. Duran, along with 17 other award recipients from throughout the state, will be honored at the FAEA Awards Breakfast on Saturday, October 21st from 7:30-8:30am in St. Petersburg, FL. #bbbsglowbowl was a great event this year! Northport is so happy to support our wonderful partners in education in this annual event. Northport has several mentors and four tutors that serve from 40 – 60 kindergarten through second grade students. Northport’s school grade went from a C to a B this year. Part of the school’s success can be attributed to the many services that are received from a plethora of community partners. After the Jaguars take the win on Tuesday, September 19, with a score of 23-14 against the John Carroll Rams, they play again on September 22 against the Okeechobee Brahman Bulls. The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Color Guard (c/MAJ Tesa May  and c/ MSG Hayley Pollard as the flag bearers and c/CPT Morgan Emerson and c/SFC Dominic Casianio as the guards) start the game with the presentation of colors.

After the break from school, the Port St. Lucie Jaguars start off strong with their first varsity home game against the John Carroll Rams on Tuesday, September 19. The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Color Guard starts the game off by presenting the colors: c/ MAJ Tesa May, c/ CPT Allison Wilhoit c/SFC Dominic Casianio , and c/ SSG Andre Hannon show their school and nation pride by respectfully displaying the colors.

The employees of Mariposa Elementary are not just coworkers; they also pull together as family. When Hurricane Irma came through Port Saint Lucie and left Mariposa Elementary with debris to clean up, everyone knew it would take many hands to clean our school. After the storm, Mr. R. Craig Logue, Mrs. Brie Lamb, faculty, and staff pulled together and cleaned Mariposa’s school grounds from the debris which Hurricane Irma left in its aftermath. It was a lot of hard work, but the result was beautiful.

The “Manateam” from Manatee Academy K-8 came together to support one of their teachers who experienced flooding during Hurricane Irma to demonstrate how working together is better!

Eagle student-athletes showed their team and community spirit by working together to lend helping hands to assist others in putting up shutters and aiding in other pre-storm preparations.  Athletes from the football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams worked with their coaches to help others prepare for Irma. After a full day doing something nice for others, the young gentlemen received a kindness in return.  Golden Corral in St. Lucie West honored them with discount for lunch!!!

It has been said that every cloud has a silver lining. If a cloud can produce a silver lining, just think what a hurricane like Irma can do. New friendships are formed, care for others is demonstrated, a chance to calm the nerves of those who are frightened is taken, food is provided, help is given, laughter becomes common language among those who come to seek shelter, and finally, sometimes even romance blossoms! St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) will resume normal operations on Monday, September 18. The bells will sound on time, normal transportation will pick back up, before- and after-school activities will continue, and the District’s Student Assignment Office will be open and prepared to support families from this community and from other areas who need to enroll students.  The Student Assignment Office’s temporarily location is on the Fort Pierce Westwood campus (1801 Panther Lane, Fort Pierce). Ms. Erica Morales’ fourth grade students at Mariposa Elementary have been enjoying partnering with one another to complete their Math Scoot center. The Math Scoot center encourages students to deepen their knowledge with place value. Evan Lamb is discussing his findings at the center with his partner. Also in Ms. Erica Morales’ class, students created Identity Boxes. Jeffrey Campion enjoyed creating his identity box which showcased how he feels he is as a person. The students were very excited to share their personalities and projects with their classmates.

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Linda Auciello’s 1st grade students Abigail Negron, Sophia Manson and Rashard Alston are busy working on their “listen to read” reading center. Reading center rotations are practiced to ensure students stay engaged and gain a variety of different learning opportunities within their classroom.

Jacqueline Baptiste-Harris, a first grade teacher at Village Green Environmental Studies School, is making a difference that “exemplifies the importance of economic and financial education critical to students’ future success,” according to the Council for Economic Education. Jeanne Ziemba, principal of St. Lucie Public School’s (SLPS) Mosaic Digital Academy, will attend this year’s Florida Distance Learning Association (FDLA) annual conference on September 15th as an honoree for the Innovative Leader in Distance Learning: K-12 award.  Chief Academic Officer Dr. Helen Wild explained that this award is established to recognize excellence and innovation in using technology to enhance teaching and learning. “We’re so excited for her,” said Wild. “Mrs. Ziemba has been the driving force with the vision behind Mosaic since its inception five years ago; she’s deserving of this award.” Mosaic Digital Academy is a K-12 virtual school … Read More

Students in Ms. Zoie Griffiths’ 5th grade class at Mariposa Elementary learn about controlled experiments. The students completed an investigation that tested how high a ball would bounce on four different surfaces. They learned about variables, the scientific process, and even included some math by finding the average height of the five trials. This will be the first of many experiments and investigations that the students will get to do in 5th grade.

F.K. Sweet 2nd graders in Mrs. Lott’s class enjoyed learning about the solar eclipse and loved making models to represent what was happening to the Sun, Moon, and Earth during the eclipse.

On Sunday August 20, 2017, the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Commander cadet Lieutenant Colonel Travis Cetin supported William at his 13th birthday party at Superplay USA. William is on the autism spectrum, and he has experienced bullying. For his birthday, all William wanted was for his friends to show up to his party. To his surprise, over 1,000 people showed up to celebrate his birthday. On August 12, 2017, the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Color Guard presented the colors to a group of 32 wounded veterans. The Jaguar color guard marched to welcome and honor the wounded veterans on the 6th Annual Wounded Warrior Surf Day Project, a day marked to enjoy surfing at the Fort Pierce Inlet State Park.
