Students in the Aerospace Technologies Academy at Fort Pierce Central High School gained knowledge from experts in the Aerospace career pathways. Speakers included Paul Cejas, Deputy Chief Engineer for Autonomous Systems from Boeing; and representing Aeronyde was Alexander “Sasha” Biloos, Chief Technology Officer.
Community members attended PBPA’s first Community Connection Luncheon on Oct. 8th. Students were able to hear success stories and interact with different community members. They were also able to learn about some interests that our community members have and how those interests helped them experience success in their careers.
On Saturday October 5, 2019, the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion hosted a practice Raider meet. This meet is a warm-up for the upcoming Raider season. The teams got the chance to work together efficiently and effectively while also seeing how well each teammate performed under pressure. The competition consisted of different physical and mental challenges. Teams all started with the relay race and moved on to other sections of the competition such as a rope bridge, tire flip, cross country rescue, and a team obstacle course. PSLHS’s Battalion Honor Guard Sergeant Major Locklar was recently promoted to an Eagle Scout with his Boy Scout Troop 499. Becoming an Eagle Scout is a major accomplishment that is recognized by the military. Joseph can enter any branch of the military he desires as an Private First Class, which is two ranks higher then everyone else. He is actively involved with JROTC, Scouts of America, and his local church/ youth group. His ceremony will be held this November. FBI Agent Gavin Gumbinner visited the Law Academy at SLW Centennial High School and met with Ms. Oliveira’s and Ms. Baumgarten’s classes. The students learned about how to become an FBI agent, the responsibilities of an FBI agent and he answered general questions that the students had.
The TCHS Jazz Band treated the audience at the October School Board meeting to a mini-concert and received a standing ovation!
Lawnwood Leopards participated in a hands-on lab as they deepened their understanding of dissolved substances. They worked collaboratively by following directions, making predictions and observing the properties of dissolved substances.
Ms. Willems’ AICE Marine Science Students participated in “A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon,” an annual citizen science and participatory project, where environmental partners, students, and teachers collaborate to simultaneously collect scientific data at sites along the 156 mile stretch of the lagoon.
Students from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy’s Allied Health and Health Unit Coordinator Program participated in their first clinical training for the year. These students are pursuing an industry certification in either Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Health Unit Coordinator (CHUC). This group is led by Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Montgomery and Ms. Danielle Garcia (CHUC).
Mariposa Elementary celebrated “Empowerment” which is a Social and Emotional Learning theme. Third grade teacher Ms. Mikki Watson is with Tajmore Cooper, Lauren Rocha, Rosalyn Lesesne, Jaden Salazar-Taveras, Anthony Narducci, Blake McKoy, Cooper Yates, Justin Garcia, Ariana Albuquerque, Jocelyn Erwin, Macy Bierbach, and Tanner Feick. On Friday, September 27, 2019, Lincoln Park Academy Middle School students participated in the annual Commitment to Graduate “C2G” ceremony. This ceremony reminds students of the caring adults who support them and why they are in school, which is to graduate! After the students shook Mr. Sanabria’s hand, signed a graduate silhouette, and received a keepsake to commemorate the celebration. This is their declaration that they are their commitment to graduate from high school. Their commitment silhouette will be proudly displayed on campus. Great job, Greyhounds!
Lincoln Park Academy elected new middle school officers on Friday, September 27th. Candidates campaigned throughout the week, garnering votes for the election. Middle school students voted in their social studies classroom after listening to candidates speeches during the morning announcements. The TCHS Boys Bowling Team placed 6th out of 15 teams at the Kegel Bowling Center Tournament! The Kegel Training Center offers bowling training and is where many Bowling pros offer their expertise to young, aspiring bowlers. TCHS had the highest score for the St Lucie District!
Weatherbee staff and students wore yellow and caught the wave to empowerment on Friday, September 27th. Each class designed a surfboard illustrating ways they feel empowered or can empower others. Weatherbee’s motto this year is “Catch the Wave to Success” and the surfboards tie into that theme.
Sixth grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy time at Southport’s annual Student Retreat. This year the Marlins and the Bobcats each had their own day for students to participate. There were activities and games throughout each day, as well as small group discussions where students learned about each other’s likes and dislikes. The day began in the gym and students were later split into small groups with adult team leaders to take part in various team building activities. Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced Treasure Coast Senior Ryan Lu as a Semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. As a talented High School Senior, Ryan has an opportunity to continue in the competition for a National Merit Scholarship. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Ryan must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of competition. Over 100 Dads attended this annual event. Dads and students enjoyed a healthy breakfast while Mr. Chambers provided words of encouragement.
Saturday, September 28, 2019, the Port Saint Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion conducted their first car wash of the year. Approximately 30 cadets from the program volunteered to wash cars from 8A.M. to 12P.M. Money raised at the carwash went towards the Raider team and miscellaneous JROTC activities/events. This was a fun event that brought the cadets out to the community and helped to teach the cadets the value of teamwork and communication. Overall the event had a great turnout and was full of positive energy throughout the day.
The middle school art program, under the instruction of Mrs. Susan Wessel, studied the work of Mark Jenkins, who is an installation artist from Washington D.C. Students created sculptural pieces resembling Jenkin’s work. Artists used packaging tape to construct the life size sculptures. They planned their sculpture’s location and purpose throughout the campus including the buddy bench, school library, common areas, and school garden. During the month of September, Palm Pointe students participated in social emotional learning (SEL) activities, discussions, and community circles focused around the theme of Empowerment.
