Ms. Duran’s middle school students from Lincoln Park Academy participated in the Lion’s International Peace Poster Contest. First, second, and third place winners were selected by local artist, Debi Crouse. First place was awarded to Kiera Chapman-Martinez (7th). Second place was awarded to Brittney Wolfe (8th). Third place resulted in a tie between Bianca Arcadipane (7th) and Natali Gallegos (6th). Kiera Chapman-Martinez’s poster will advance to represent Lincoln Park Academy in the Peace Poster Contest. Honorable Mentions were also selected including Kara Valure (8th), Ripley Greenwald (8th), Summer Sinclair (8th), Talia Bock (8th), Francisco Godinez (7th), and Casey Chilton (6th). A selection of the student’s work will be displayed at the Zora Neale Hurston branch library for the month of January. The library is located at 3008 Ave D, Fort Pierce, FL 34947.
The Fort Pierce Lion’s Club generously sponsored Lincoln Park Academy’s participation in this contest by providing large drawing pads of paper, prizes, ribbons, and certificates. The first, second, and third place students recently attended an awards dinner hosted by the Lion’s Club. The students had the opportunity to meet Debi Crouse and members of the Fort Pierce Lion’s Club. Additionally, they each spoke about their individual creation and views on peace.
Students at Allapattah Flats K-8 did some mini force and motion investigations before their unit assessment. They were able to see the effect friction has on the distance of the toy school bus versus when they placed it on the tile. They were also able to see the more mass something has the more force it has such as trying to knock down water bottles with a golf ball and a volleyball. Students also explored magnets and the attraction and repulsion between the poles. The station that every student loved the most was using the spring scales to find the weight in grams and Newtons pulling on a regular toy school bus and one that had added mass. They then took these school buses and saw how mass can effect the distance an object in motion goes. Students loved this fun center rotation for force and motion.
The students in Mrs. Johnson’s Challenge class get serious about learning how to find area. How many square inches are in a square foot? 144 — they made a model!

In Mr. Caroglanian’s technology class 1st -5th grade students are participating in The Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code,” to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with one-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.
As 5th grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 finished up their unit for Force and Motion, they brushed up on their Tug-of-War skills. Students were given a recording sheet with four scenarios dealing with balanced and unbalanced forces. Students played out the various scenarios to decide which side had a greater force or a net force of zero. Students loved having the hands on learning time as well as throwing a little physical movement in. Way to go Gators!
