The SLW Centennial High School’s NAVY JROTC “Black Talon” Company traveled to Brooksville, Florida on Saturday, October 7th, 2023, to participate in the Iron Bear Physical Fitness Challenge hosted by the Central High School NJROTC.
The “Black Talon” Company competed in 13 events: Damage Control, Fire Hose Relay, Agility Course, Mount Suribachi, Hamster Wheel, Tire Flip Relay, Truck Pull, Tug-of-War, 100 Yard Relay, Obstacle Course, Dizzy Izzy, Klackerboards, and the Sea Bag Relay.
The events were challenging, and the cadets had fun competing against 22 other NJROTC units from all across the State of Florida.
There were two individual events that cadets could participate in. The Knock-out Drill and The Beast (Big Tire Flip). The Knock-out Drill challenges all participating cadets in Drill movements. As the Commander calls facing commands, cadets perform the drill movement. If the cadets execute them wrong or if they move when an incorrect command is given, they are eliminated.
Cadet Petty Officer First Class Athaniel Morales finished in First Place and Cadet Lieutenant Casey Scott finished in Second Place during the Knock-out drill representing the “Black Talon” Company well!
“The Beast” is an Individual Tire Flip competition. The cadet that is able to flip “The Beast” twice the fastest is the winner of the challenge. Cadet Petty Officer First Class Zachary Columbia was able to flip it twice in less than 20 seconds. He came in second place and did an outstanding job! Other cadets were not able to budge “The Beast”!
