Have you heard the latest news chirping about our campus? Mrs. Eibl’s second-grade class has welcomed the newest student to their learning cottage—Chick 1! Mrs. Eibl’s class has been working with the 4H program to hatch chicks. The students were very excited to welcome baby chick #1 and can’t wait for the others to hatch.
On Saturday, March 2nd, the Port Saint Lucie High School JROTC Jaguar Battalion competed at the Area 3 State Qualifier at Seminole Ridge Community High School to see what teams would qualify for the Florida State Drill Competition. Forest Grove Middle School students participated in their annual Black History Wax Museum. They showed their creative personalities as they studied and highlighted important contributions made to our country by the influential Black Americans they represented. Students created a visual display, dressed as their characters, and gave speeches highlighting their achievements.
McKinney Vento Case Manager, Dieucica Times, took part in the Black Health Panel to show support for National Black HIV/AIDS Day. During the event, she shared valuable insights about the McKinney Vento program’s eligibility criteria and the assistance it provides to our SLPS families. With her wealth of experience and expertise in working with this demographic, Dieucica effortlessly blended her two backgrounds, adding an impactful and memorable element to the event.
In Celebration of Black History Month, the Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District Court of Florida sponsored the creative arts and essay contest. Fort Pierce Central High School Key Club members attended the event. Eddison Petion won Honorable Mention for his artwork and essay while Chaynna Thompson won Honorable Mention for her poem. Congrats to our FPC Cobras for their hard work.
More than one hundred families from Floresta Elementary participated in the Reading Under the Stars Literacy Night, where they acquired valuable literacy skills and strategies that can easily be implemented at home to cultivate a passion for reading.
Palm Pointe NJHS members helped to collect jars of peanut butter for the Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club. These donated jars of peanut butter are placed in Grace Packs with additional nonperishable food items and distributed to local food-insecure children at the end of each school week. The Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary partners with Grace Packs, Inc. who currently have 790 students on the roster receiving these Grace Packs.
The student council at Morningside Elementary is making a huge impact on their environment. These conscientious bluejays did some spring cleaning around the playground. Students collected 6 bags of garbage and 1 bag of belongings from around the school. These young leaders understand the importance of helping out and lending a hand. Way to go bluejays!
The Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war (POW) from the municipalities of Bagac and Mariveles on the Bataan Peninsula to Camp O’Donnell via San Fernando. To honor our American and allied POWs, our cadets march 14 miles every year. Here are a few pictures of this years march we held this past weekend. Titan Born, Titan Bred!
Culinary Arts High School students from across St. Lucie Public Schools competed at Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Education Foundation (FRLAEF) ProStart competitions in Orlando, Florida, and came out winners! Their accomplishments deserve celebration! Shark Nation was well-represented at this year’s STEM Fair. Ten students were invited to showcase their projects during the event. Students had to explain their reasoning behind their projects to judges. While at Indian River State College, they had the opportunity to visit the Robotics and EMT labs. SLWK8 students participated in the Treasure Coast Chapter Competition for the first time and earned 2nd place. They are eligible to compete at the state level! Way to go, Sharks!
The South County Career Fair was held on February 27th at the MIDFLorida Event Center. Approximately 400 juniors and seniors from Mosaic Digital Academy, Port St. Lucie High, SLW Centennial, and Treasure Coast High were in attendance. Students were able to meet and chat with company representatives, ask questions about their company and careers, interview, and possibly land internships. The goal was to expose students to the companies and businesses in St. Lucie County, provide them with the opportunity to learn and explore specific industries, gain the confidence needed to approach adults and start conversations, interview, and practice soft skills. Students are encouraged to build healthy habits at Village Green Elementary School! Once a week during their PE class they are given pedometers to track their steps. Students are provided information on the positive health benefits of physical activity. The challenge is to increase their steps every week in order to maintain good overall health. Students have enjoyed monitoring their steps and activity and tracking their progress. They have also been doing a wonderful job motivating each other to achieve their health and activity goals!
On February 27th, sixth-grade students at Southern Oaks Middle School made their contribution to the school’s many Black History Month events. Students hosted a Black History Month wax museum impersonation experience unlike any other. Sixth graders were visibly transformed into Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Tina Turner, and even Beyonce from head to toe. One parent added she shopped for clothing and paraphernalia after studying the pictures of Rosa Parks. Southern Oaks Middle School enters the field of STEAM and robotics in January. The school began its first STEAM and robotics club this year. Spearheaded by ESE teacher, Maria Benjamin, the afterschool club meets twice weekly and teaches high-tech design of robots and drones. Benjamin who has had a strong desire to start the club for years, finally decided that this was the year. Congratulations to OHK8 students for winning at the County’s Regional STEM Fair. Micah Prakash, a 7th-grade student, won 2nd place in Intelligent Machines with “Pen vs Pixel. Lydia Bailey, an 8th-grade student won 2nd place in Environmental Science with “Recycled Paper.” The OHK8 family is extremely proud of their accomplishment. Mrs. Christopher, from Village Green Elementary School, celebrated Black History Month with students during their lunchtime with a fun game of Black History Trivia. Students in grades Kindergarten through fifth were able to participate and they had a great time learning fun and interesting facts about significant figures and events throughout history.
