FPMSA fifth graders celebrated making great choices at a PBIS celebration on February 19th. Friends, snacks, games, and crafts were part of the fun enjoyed by all who attended. Mr. Darrell M.Schwartz, history teacher at Treasure Coast High School, announces that about two months ago the Gaming Club was created on our campus. The purpose of the club is to bring all students together who have an interest in friendship and fun competition. The club includes Video and Computer Gaming along with Board Games and Card Games. The club meets weekly and has grown to over 40 students attending with very limited promotion.   Fifth grade students at Morningside Elementary learned all about body systems with hands-on activities including viewing how air expands real pig lungs, touching and seeing real animal organs, and learning where all the inner body systems are located.  Finally, the students were shown how by tapping on the body, they could tell whether the body part was solid or hollow.  The head sounded hollow much to the students’ surprise!    

Students in third grade at Morningside Elementary each received a dictionary from the Rotary Club of Port Saint Lucie. Students were excited as they looked through the pages at pictures and new words in their very own dictionary.  Thank you, Rotary, for your wonderful gift!

Northport K-8 history instructor, Bob Burdge, and eleven Northport middle grades students represented Northport at the SLPS District History Fair held at Indian River State College recently. Fifth grade students in Mrs. Logue’s science class at FPMSA explored how when the environment changes, differences between individuals allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce while others die or move to new locations. Students had 10 seconds to pick up as many beans as possible. They discovered that they picked up more beans of the color that contrasted with the paper they were on. Lindsey Perez joined the Allapattah Flats family last school year and has made it her home. You never know what you will find when you enter the doors of Mrs. Perez’s science class. The students from the photo competed in SkillsUSA Regional Competition in Orlando, FL last week, Thursday, February 18.  Students were in the Community Service Competition and won 1st Place for Region 3. Student Names: Olivia Wallman, Arielly Dias, and Arthur Waddell Students in this competition had the following purpose: To evaluate local chapter activities that benefit the community and to recognize excellence and professionalism in the area of community service. This event also enables the community to become aware of the outstanding work being performed by career and technical education students.  

The month of February is dedicated to celebrating and honoring the many achievements and contributions made by African Americans to the economic, cultural, and political development of America. On February 19th, Donna Washington joined Gaines Academy in celebrating African American culture through the art of storytelling. Ms. Washington is a renowned story teller and author who had student and teachers of all ages captivated with her narratives. Thank you, Ms. Washington! On Thursday, February 18, 2016, we were amazed by Master Storyteller Donna Washington who engaged and awakened the imaginations of students at St. Lucie Elementary with relevant stories and lessons. The enthusiasm was infectious from one student to the next as talk of her unforgettable performance was non-stop throughout the day. The Rising Stars 3rd and 4th grade Gifted and Enriched students and Northstars 7th grade Gifted and Enriched classes collaborated in a cross curricular and cross grade level project on sound energy and production. Students accepted the challenge to create an orchestra using recycled materials. Students drew sketches of proposed instruments, wrote build procedures and play procedures, and then played three notes on each instrument. The older students mentored the younger students during the entire process. Fairlawn is participating in this year’s annual Empty Bowl Project. Thirty students in Mr. Gelardo’s art class will be creating clay pottery bowls for the event to be held on Saturday, March 12th, at the Ft. Pierce Farmers’ Market. Each bowl will sell for $15 and will benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Every dollar raised will provide 7 meals to people in our community. Students who create the bowls can purchase them first or they will be taken to the event and sold along with the many other bowls created by the other schools in our district. White City Elementary School congratulates first grader Madison Maclachlan in Ms. Bianchi’s class! Madison was the school-wide top fundraiser for Jump Rope for Heart! Madison raised $370. This money is donated to the American Heart Association whose primary mission is to help “build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.”  We are so proud of you Madison!

It is with great pleasure that Northport hosted Yvonne Meyerson, Philanthropic Advisor for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in the media center recently. Students have been learning all about Sickle Cell disease and how prevalent the disease is within our own community. The “Project Tough Kookie” program was initiated at Northport two years ago by Marie Solide, ESE instructor, who lost her daughter Kookie following a long battle with Sickle Cell Disease. Hobe Sound Nature Center visited the fourth graders at Mariposa Elementary. The center brought an owl for students to study and look at the world of raptors, while examining closely the adaptions of owls. Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni’s students learned about these adaptations through a hands-on activity investigating owl pellets. During this exciting lab activity, the students learned about food chains, ecology, and natural history. The lab activity produced small skeleton parts from rodents, birds, and more. The fourth graders were very excited to be able to take home these discoveries!

Floresta Elementary students participated in a Math Literacy Night at Publix Supermarket. The students completed a scavenger hunt using real world money problems. The students had a great time going “shopping” and learned a lot about real money problems.
