Fairlawn Elementary School made the SWEET 16 for TTM’s National Contest – The March Math Madness. This means that across the entire country, Fairlawn is in the final 16 schools! This contest allows schools to compete against schools around the country to decide who has the highest average of passed lessons per active student! This is a National Contest with thousands of schools participating!

REE’s PBIS committee hosted a Winter Dance this past month! Students paid 20 Otter Bucks to attend the dance during their resource time. Dancing and fun overflowed as students jammed to the DJ and enjoyed being able to hang out with their friends. Our fabulous PTO decorated and gave out candy. An event sure to be held again and again.

Frances K. Sweet staff held their annual Sunrise Stampede 5K/Kid Fun Run in beautiful Fort Pierce on February 27th.  Dorian Newbern was thrilled to award the first place overall prize to fourth grader Raymond Coburn.  He completed the course, which included running over South Beach Bridge twice, in 24 minutes and 17 seconds.  All proceeds will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Students in Mrs. Irby’s and Mr. Tuner’s Kindergarten classes got a special visit in honor of World Read Aloud Day (February 24, 2016). Using Skype video calling technology, picture book author Stacy McAnulty read aloud from her newest book Excellent Ed. Students were able to ask questions and have them answered by the author. She then gave book recommendations to the students. A fun, engaging, time was had by all!  

On Friday February 25, 2016,  White City Elementary recognized students for the character trait of the month: Perseverance.  When you persevere, you continue trying to do your best even though something is difficult. Wildcats, we are so very proud of you and know you will continue to do great things!  

The Saint Lucie County Fair Association invited local schools to participate in themed displays.  Following the theme, “Preserve the Fun, Recycle When Done,” Lincoln Park Academy received the first place award in the high school division which included a generous $1,000 cash prize.  In a class discussion about why recycling is important for our planet and its inhabitant, the students came up with the idea that nature cannot be manufactured.  It is a gift from the earth and its beauty cannot be fabricated.  Ms. Duran’s 3D high school students (grades 9-12) collaborated in creating a large tree which read, “We … Read More

Fort Pierce Central High School Team A was recently crowned the regional champion of the 19th Annual National Ocean Science Bowl. The “Florida Manatee Bowl” attracted 20 teams from across Florida in a competition that tests students’ knowledge on a wide range of chemical, physical, biological, environmental, and social issues of the ocean.  The competition took place at FAU-Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and on the campus of the Marine Oceanographic Academy in Ft. The whole school participated in a PBIS event for making great choices at a PBIS celebration on February 26th. The students all danced and sang to their favorite songs and had a great time. Northport proudly celebrates our very diverse culture every day, and Thursday, February 25, 2016, was especially special at the school. Kindergarten students in Mrs. Kourtney Burton’s class at Frances K. Sweet have been learning about Dr. Seuss and completing various activities to celebrate his many books. Students sampled green eggs and ham and then graphed whether or not they liked them. Dr. McEwen and Mrs. Barr organized a celebration of Black History Month with an assembly for students and staff at the Education Center of St. Lucie County’s Juvenile Detention Center. The assembly followed the national theme for Black History Month, Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memory. In attendance were 38 students, all teaching staff and DJJ staff members. A select group of 8th grade students from Lincoln Park Academy participated in the 1st Middle School Great Explorations event in conjunction with Indian River State College.  Students were able to get hands-on experience with Green Room technology and video production, as well as laser, Allied Health, and Robotics fields, while speaking with professors and students about the school-college-work connection.  The all day event was intended to provide a “spark” for these students who will soon be entering high school and beginning their college exploration journey.              

Our young scientists exemplified what Northport K-8 strives to achieve: education , practice of the basic traits of moral and ethical behavior, development of intellectual curiosity, logical thinking using problem solving and reasoning skills, and pride in achievement! Kindergarten students at Frances K. Sweet loved having employees from the City of Fort Pierce volunteer in the classrooms.  Morgan Haupt’s students: Carter Stokes, Tyler Li, and Sienna Mills enjoyed listening to a story and playing a game of sight word Bingo with Kevin Browning.

Dirk Smith, Plant Manager of Village Green Environmental Studies School, has implemented a fun and rewarding recycling program.  Each week the classes of VGESS compete to see who will win a coveted Sundae Party for the most material recycled in one week.  The incentive program has been a huge success. The Odyssey of the Mind team from Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School performed at Regional Competition at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL.  The team not only qualified for state, they received the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award.  This award is the highest award in the Odyssey of the Mind program.  For this award, judges are asked to only make nominations if exceptional creativity is exhibited.  Comments on their award included, “The Division I team went above and beyond the requirements of the problem.  The team was incredibly insightful and advanced for elementary students.”  Congratulations, Fairlawn Odyssey Team on a job … Read More
