Northport was so pleased to host SLPS School Board Chair Dr. Donna Mills at our Speakers Bureau.  The theme for the program for the month of December was peer pressure and integrity.  The program was kicked off with a skit on peer pressure and bullying by eighth grade drama students Ryan Gilbert and Elaina Ledford.  Special thanks to Northport drama instructor Alison Barajas for working with the students and instilling the love of drama.  Northport middle grades instructor Sandra Tyndale Harvey sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” to help encourage the students to have hope and to trust caring adults to … Read More

Treasure Coast High School graduate, Bailer Magers ’17, received notification this week from Cambridge that he achieved the ‘Top in Country’ award for the Economics AS Exam. ‘Top in Country’ refers to the learner who has gained the highest standard mark in the United States for the AICE Economics AS level exams in June 2017. Congratulations to Bailey!  Bailey is currently studying engineering and is a member of the Honors Program at the University of Florida.    

On Friday, November 17, 2017, Allapattah Flats welcomed motivational speaker and SLPS Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Prince of the Speakers Bureau.  Dr. Prince was introduced by Dr. Donna Mills who began the Speakers Bureau four years ago.  Dr. Prince has a passion for reaching students by sharing his real life story and impressing upon them that all decisions you make in life does have an everlasting impact upon your life. Ms. Duran’s middle school students from Lincoln Park Academy participated in the Lion’s International Peace Poster Contest. First, second, and third place winners were selected by local artist, Debi Crouse. First place was awarded to Kiera Chapman-Martinez (7th). Second place was awarded to Brittney Wolfe (8th). Third place resulted in a tie between Bianca Arcadipane (7th) and Natali Gallegos (6th). Kiera Chapman-Martinez’s poster will advance to represent Lincoln Park Academy in the Peace Poster Contest. Students in the Forest Grove MOA program were invited to attend and deliver the Pledge of Allegiance at the groundbreaking ceremony for the McCarty Ranch Extension Water Quality Project on Tuesday, December 11, 2017. This extension will prevent nearly nine billion gallons of water from entering our local waterways, resulting in a reduction of excess freshwater discharge. This project will directly impact the waterways that MOA students are focusing on for their Samsung #solvefortomorrow project. #saveourlagoon    

Students at Allapattah Flats K-8 did some mini force and motion investigations before their unit assessment. They were able to see the effect friction has on the distance of the toy school bus versus when they placed it on the tile. They were also able to see the more mass something has the more force it has such as trying to knock down water bottles with a golf ball and a volleyball. As 5th grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 finished up their unit for Force and Motion, they brushed up on their Tug-of-War skills. Students were given a recording sheet with four scenarios dealing with balanced and unbalanced forces. Students played out the various scenarios to decide which side had a greater force or a net force of zero. Students loved having the hands on learning time as well as throwing a little physical movement in. Way to go Gators!             

Palm Pointe’s Junior Beta members attended the State Convention where they competed in many different areas such as visual arts, robotics, academics, team competitions, and even club competitions. Junior Beta Club is divided into two different groups. Division I is 4th and 5th graders and Division II is 6th-8th graders. National Beta is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. Congratulations to SHELDON RILEY and JAMES WEICHMANN from Fort Pierce Westwood High School! They are the winners of the Fresh from Florida Student Chef Cook-off regional competition. Sheldon and James prepared a Raw Kale Pasta Salad with a Strawberry Vinaigrette and Chipotle Chicken. Sheldon and James will move to the next level of competition for the State Title in Tallahassee.

Palm Pointe’s National Junior Honor Society sponsored a food drive in the month of November for the Treasure Coast Food Bank and collected 802 pounds of food.   Way to go Rockets!

Mariposa Elementary celebrated their PBIS by creating a Unity Friendship Rock Garden. Florida Falls in Fort Pierce was very generous in donating over 700 rocks. Each student was able to design their own rock to represent friendship, unity, anti-bullying, caring words, and respect. Once the rocks were complete, they were placed in a “garden” for all students and staff to enjoy. The rock garden sends a strong message of positivity for all.    Forest Grove Middle School moves on as a national finalist in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a program that encourages students to solve real-world issues in their community using classroom skills in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Northport community is so very proud of our essay contest winners for the recent writing opportunity for our sixth graders.  The American Security Council Foundation offers a program that teaches good citizenship called “Step Up America.”  Northport has made the program an integral piece of educating students about the many aspects of being a great citizen and how to become aware of their surroundings.  We have dubbed that program “Step Up Northport.” The essay topic was titled “What Freedom Means to Me and What Protects Our Freedoms in this Country.”  The prizes for the essay contest were awarded to John … Read More

A collection of artworks from twelve young Lincoln Park Academy artists are being displayed at Art Connection Gallery in the Arcade Building, 101 US-1 (and Orange Ave.) in Ft Pierce.  The students from Lisa Steffens-Smith class have been studying the contemporary artist Jim Dine.  All student work is a representation of the artist. An opening reception has taken place in the gallery.  Exhibitions will be open to the public until November 30th. New York’s BFA Photography & Video School of Visual Arts selected the works of gifted student artists from Fort Pierce Central High School for an exhibit entitled 2017 America. Fourteen students from Ms. Heather Blackmon-Gordon’s classes have their works on display at the SVA Gramercy Gallery in New York City.  The total exhibit features a wide range of artistic perspectives from over 30 states.
