Ms. Cirocco’s Geometry Class is creating roller coasters! The students are finally in the building stages of the framework and some are even starting to put the tracks on! . The purpose of the project is to bring science and math from the classroom into the real world. Class discussions have been about how the engineers and builders have to create a design and then build.

Seventh and eighth grade students in Northstars STEM class are working on finishing their PLTW Medical Detectives unit ending in a “murder mystery.” Students have calculated time of death, dusted for prints, analyzed hair samples, and compared shoe-print patterns among other things to determine which suspects they would question. Today students interrogated their suspects. Next, students will act as lawyers, judge and jury to determine the guilt of one of the fictitious suspects. Second Lieutenant, Army Ranger, Xiovani Guanill dedicated his 53rd parachute jump to NPK* students. Xiovani attended school at Northport and graduated from our Landsharks team. He was just a regular funny kid with a sarcastic and witty sense of humor. Xiovani Guanill wanted in some way to make his parents proud because he grew up with his mom in a wheelchair. He floated around a little then joined the United States Army. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He even visited Northport children one time and his helmet still had Iraqi sand in it. Child Nutrition Services was invited to Village Green Environmental Studies School by the Kindergarten class to assist in the harvesting and cleaning of radishes grown by the students in the school garden. After the harvest, the students participated in a kitchen tour given by Ms. Deanna Kinder, cafeteria manager, including a stop by the freezer! Ms. Dawn Davila showed students how to wash and trim the radishes and explained how the roots bring nutrients to the plant to help it grow into the food we eat. Northport is a very lucky school, and our children are well thought of throughout our community. One of our community partners, First Baptist Church of Port Saint Lucie or 1 PSL Church, collaborated with another Northport community partner, First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie, to bring a fabulous summer reading program to our students. On April 26th at 6PM the Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion hosted their annual Change of Command Ceremony. Relieving the current Battalion Commander of his duty c/LTC Travis Cetin welcomed c/LTC Veronika Patti to command and lead the Battalion on a successful path for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. Northport eighth graders have been given a wonderful opportunity to tour Washington, D.C. next year. Instructor Thomas McDonald is organizing this enlightening and educational trip for our students. Northport second grade instructor Jennifer Lusardi and her class, along with students and teachers from VPK to grade five, participated in fun and energizing field days recently at Northport. The students loved the time playing games and competing for ribbons. According to campus participants, this was healthy, fun, and promoted positive interaction and socialization skills. The kids absolutely loved it! Many thanks to coaches, teachers and parents who made NP Field Days a success for the children.
