This year has been a year of achievement and success at Northport. The accomplishments of our students have been stunning. On the final day of school, Edie Majewski, City of Port Saint Lucie Sidewalks Projects Manager, visited the school along with the news crew from channel 20. On May 17th, 2018 Treasure Coast High School AFJROTC participated in the first annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down in Fort Pierce, alongside many other organizations. They supplied items such as sleeping bags, care bags, food, boots, and many other helpful items to veterans in need. This is the first of many veterans outreach events for upcoming years, making it one of their unit goals to continue to help struggling veterans. Wonderful job to the students, teachers, support staff and parents who have encouraged, prodded and demonstrated kindergartners into a successful end of their first year of school. The songs and showmanship were exemplary and the kindergartners were on their very best behavior when receiving their diplomas and accolades from the hundreds of parents waiting in anticipation for their very own pride and joy to cross the stage. Northport fifth grade graduation was a first-rate event! Just when you think you can’t celebrate one more thing, those fifth graders go and make the tears come to your eyes. The NP gymnasium was packed with parents, grandparents and families that truly care about the success and achievement of their children. Students were honored for perfect attendance and for highest achievement in resource, math, reading and science. Students then performed a musical number in unison facing their parents. Delegates from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office met with the Cobra CERT, or the Cobra Community Emergency Response Team, and provided a donation for $1,000.00 to support the group’s continued efforts. A special thank you is extended to the Sheriff and his officers for their support. Cobra CERT is an extracurricular program available to students at Fort Pierce Central High School. Just when we think our students couldn’t make us any prouder, our writers do their “Run for the Roses!” This morning, Kolbee Cicio, Allyson Sheets, Mercella Stephens, Sydnee Coryn, Emmanuel Serpas Funes, Emmalyne Lewiston and Ariana Aponte Quiles proved that Northport students love writing and they are very good at their craft. State Representative Larry Lee Jr., of the Florida House of Representatives, challenged Southport Middle School ESOL students to continue working hard in school. Through his own life story, he explained how anything is possible when you remain determined to achieve your goals. The students also got the chance to learn about his grassroots community movement “Restoring the Village”  and his beliefs that by working together, we can make the world a better place. What a momentous week at Northport! This weeked capped off the collaboration between First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie, First Baptist Church of Port St. Lucie and Northport K-8 School to provide an exceptional summer reading program for every child at the school appropriately themed, “Faith In Literacy!” The two churches collected picture books, chapter books, fiction and non fiction books at every service for the last few months. Three thousand summer reading books were collected for the children of Northport. West Gate K-8 students learned about various high school Career and Technical Education programs from across the SLPS District through their Career and Reality Fair.  Students and instructors from Criminal Justice, Allied Health, Agritechnology, and Biomedical programs provided students with hand-on demonstrations. In addition, they provided information about curriculum. Bill Wilcox from Phoenix Medals spoke to students about the manufacturing industry and its continued growth potential. Northport is pleased to announce that fifth grade student, Paris Martinez from Mrs. Tredor’s class has won not only the District 9 Florida Retired Educators Association essay contest, but also the state of Florida award. At the state level, Paris will receive a special plaque and $150 cash award. The topic was “A Memory With a Grandparent!” The accolades just keep .❤ We are teaching children to be courageous writers at our school. ?

Fort Pierce Westwood High School football jersey #32, worn by legendary Oakland Raider Khalil Mack, will move to the distinguished ranks of retirement in a pre-game ceremony at 7 PM on May 17, 2018 at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce.  Fans are invited to show their Panther Pride and celebrate Mack’s on-field and off-field accomplishments as his jersey takes its place alongside #20 Craig Swoope and #6 Ryan McNeil.   St. Lucie West Centennial High School Junior Kaylee Wampler was applauded for her student leadership efforts at May’s School Board Meeting.  She has already started making her mark and lending her voice to causes for which she feels passion. Most recently, she was an eloquent speaker at the League of Women Voters.  In addition, she organized the March for Our Lives in Port St. Lucie. Kaylee is to be admired for her advocacy, self-empowerment, and encouragement to engage others in positive community action.

The sixth-grade students at Southport Middle School extended their thanks to residents in our Port St. Lucie community with hand-crafted cards, bookmarks and blankets as part of a school-wide service project. The celebration began outside the media center where students welcomed the residents of Harbor Place Assisted Living, residents of Ballentrae and members of Holy Family Church with an “Appreciation Tunnel.”  Once they arrived to their destination, the students enjoyed conversation with their guests and gave their personalized gifts of kindness to them.  Everyone enjoyed the entertainment the students provided through skits and a musical ensemble. Our amazing Cobras organized events over the last month to discuss and bring attention to the issue of school shootings. These events included performances by our Louder Than a Bomb Team, Choir, Drama, and culminated with a student panel discussion. On Friday, May 4th, the audience included our Superintendent of Schools, police officers, local judge, commissioners, representatives, and many other community leaders — all listening to our students! We are so proud of our Cobras!        

Forest Grove Middle School students recently traveled to Medieval Times in Kissimmee, FL for a day of information, entertainment and lunch. Students viewed medieval artifacts and then watched medieval games, sword-fighting, and jousting while feasting on a hearty lunch. Shown in the photo are participants from FGMS.

On April 26th at 6PM, the Port Saint Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion hosted their annual Change of Command ceremony. Relieving the current Battalion Commander of his duty c/LTC Travis Cetin welcomes c/LTC Veronika Patti to command and led the Battalion on a successful path. Pictured below is Mr. Jerry Earley as the Commander performing the tradition of “Passing of the Colors.”  The Change of Command is a simple, traditional event that is rich with symbolism and heritage.  The distinguished guest for the ceremony was Assistant Chief Richard Del Toro, of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

Mrs. Ciufo’s and Ms. Rovendro’s 4th Grade classes are participating in an embryology program with the 4H Club and we are incubating eggs in our classrooms. It will take 21 days for the eggs to hatch. “Candling” the chicken eggs is the way that you visually inspect the development and integrity of each egg using a bright beam of light. In the past, when there was no electricity, farmers used a candle to check the egg. Now we use flashlights!

Southport’s Heart & Sole team had a fabulous time as they completed their 2018 Girls on the Run 5K this past weekend. After completing a 10-week course, you could see the sense of accomplishment as the girls made it through to the finish line alongside their running buddy. Heart & Sole is a transformational physical activity based program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. “The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
