CAST fifth grade students in Ms. Broderick’s and Mrs. Wyatt’s classes built simple machine cars, powered using renewable energy, to demonstrate how energy can be transformed from one form to another. These students used Joule Jeep kits from our LEGO Makerspace to create vehicles powered by mechanical energy from their hand generators which was transformed into electrical energy to propel their Joule Jeeps forward.
First grade students in Mrs. McKenna’s class celebrated Hispanic Heritage month with research projects and some very special presentations. Students presented their findings through posters, books, powerpoints, artwork and performances.
Nicholas Demko has qualified as a Semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. As one of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who are Semifinalists, he has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. One of St. Lucie West K-8 School’s First graders and her family tragically endured a house fire a few weeks ago and lost everything. SLWK8 Sharks Student Council and Kindness Club organized a “No Collar for a Dollar” fundraiser on October 14th for all students, staff and teachers. In the true spirit of Shark Nation fashion, the school raised over $1000.00 for the family! Principal Gardner, Assistant Principal (Elementary) Luvenia Morgan, Student Council President, Amy McDonald and SLWK8’s Kindness Club Sponsor, Jaime Mazzo presented the check to Mom. Port St Lucie High School’s Skilled Trades Advisory Board Meetings are now being held virtually. Teachers, school administrators, guidance counselors, district support personnel, and representatives from the Treasure Coast Builders Association met via Microsoft Teams on October 19, 2020 to continue the important collaboration between the St Lucie County School District and industry. The goal remains to ensure our Career and Technical Education students are college and career ready upon graduation.
Ms. Lynch’s elementary drama students were excited to deliver their first monologues to their classmates using their knowledge of projection, characterization, and movement. They did an excellent job practicing their acting skills, as well as proper audience etiquette. CAST drama students online and in-person also put their stage design abilities to the test by designing a set using a shoe box and modeling clay. Our CAST Performers are well-prepared not only for the stage, but also for the backstage aspects of theatre!
Students and staff at Morningside Elementary dressed in “glow” from head to toe and participated in a variety of activities on Glow Day in order to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters through the Bowl for Kid’s Sake Fundraiser. Students raised over$700.
St. Lucie Elementary students in Joseph Richardson’s 5th grade class used Nearpod to discover how to find the volume of an object. Mr. Richardson was using Nearpod to launch the newest unit in math. The students had to draw a fish tank, label the dimensions, and then find the volume of their tanks. They were then tasked with finding the volume of different rectangular prisms using the quiz mode in Nearpod. Students had a blast and can’t wait for the next Nearpod lesson!

Ms. Anderson’s 2nd grade class at Fairlawn Elementary are studying the states of matter. They used the different components of a root beer float to represent the different states of matter and see the effect that they play on one another.
Students and adults alike are actively searching for a positive way to manage the stressors that come with a new school year. Through art, specifically a process modernly referred to as Zentangling, students can learn to be more mindful of the present moment. Zentangling, the act of doodling or tangling various lines and patterns, began in Ancient India and has been widely adopted into art practices and therapy today. After a year of dormancy, Oak Hammock’s Butterfly Garden is sprouting back to life and is available for learning experiences. Ms. Campbell, 6th Grade ELA teacher, nurtured and cultivated a learning environment for students. The garden also provides a park-like atmosphere where students and staff alike can go to de-stress or meditate, and it is frequently used during SEL for students to have discussions and complete exploratory writing. On Unity Day, Mariposa students and staff wore orange to show that they are together against bullying, and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Kindergartner, Nia Johnson, is pointing out our United for Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Sign. Mariposa students worked on Project Connect which connects orange strips of paper to create a chain. Project Connect joins students, schools, and communities to make a powerful statement about uniting against bullying. The Project Connect chains are showcased in the cafeteria. On Saturday, October 10th, cadets from Port St. Lucie High School participated in a car wash fundraising event at O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. The generosity of O’Reillys enabled the cadets to raise money by washing cars, all within the safety guidelines taking COVID-19 into consideration. The fundraiser was a success due to the abundance of cars the cadets were able to wash. Everything flowed smoothly as the cadets established a system of getting cars through the washing and drying stations.
