Beth Forbes’ First graders conducted an experiment in science. They predicted items would either float or sink in a tub of water. Each student had an opportunity to gently drop something into the tub. Most of their predictions were correct…however, they had two surprises: a tiny paper clip plummeted to the bottom, and a pencil floated on top of the water! Gung Hay Fat Choy! Ms. Schumacher’s 2nd graders at West Gate K-8 rang in the Chinese New Year with their new lanterns. They spent the day learning about China’s culture and customs. They were excited to get their hands on the Chinese alphabet to write to their friends and to decorate their lanterns. They also incorporated math, too! By using rulers, they were able to measure one inch borders around their paper (to know where not to cut!).

Weatherbee has worked diligently with its outstanding staff, and students, to meet the criteria for PBIS Model School Status.  Congratulations to Weatherbee for being a Gold Model School for five years in a row!

It was a sincere pleasure to host Port Saint Lucie Mayor, Greg Oravec recently at the school’s sixth Student Leadership Summit. The mayor fielded a variety of questions from sixth grade Sharks students and interacted with the large group of students for nearly two hours. The Leadership Summits, held in the school’s Media Center, have been host to Florida State Representative, Gayle Harrell, SLC school board member, Deborah Hawley, Deputy City Manager of Fort Pierce, Nick Mimms, a cadre of twelve local veterans and SLC Children’s Services Council Communications Coordinator, Ashley Mock. On Friday, February 6, Mrs. Yost and Dr. Perry visited Mariposa’s second and third grade classes who were participating in the District’s pilot chess program called First Move. From the beginning of the year, these students and their teachers have learned how to play chess and even to develop strategies as they played the game. The picture shows Mrs. Yost and Dr. Perry with Mrs. Balletta’s second graders who were playing a match against other children in the class.

Poetry Alive, an interactive program that puts actions to poetry and makes it “come alive”  for students K-5th grade was presented on Monday, February 23, 2015.  The students clapped, yelled, listened quietly and responded with gestures.  They have contests and other fun things for students at www.poetryalive.com

With much pomp, circumstance and practice, Northport students gave local hero, Attorney Willie Gary a welcome fit for a “Giant Killer!” Cheerleaders, flags, Northport band and student ambassadors led Attorney Gary to the school gymnasium to be seated on the dias along with Saint Lucie County School Board chairwoman Dr. Donna Mills, principal Glenn Rustay, program coordinator Diane Reynolds Crumpton, program emcee DeLacy Brown, and student speakers. Ft Pierce Mayor, Linda Hudson, joined the Panther Battalion Cadets for the Annual Military Ball held on Friday, February 13th. Mayor Hudson was the key note speaker for this year’s ball which was held at the Ft Pierce National Guard Armory. Cadets honored traditions such as the posting of the colors, military toasts and the grog bowl ceremony. The Panthers also let their hair down with a catered dinner and lively dancing. On February 20, 2015, Dan McCarty School’s Student Council President Tiferne Jean, along with Student Council Sponsors Dr. Christopher Pierre and Ms. Rhoda Butler, and treasurer Ladarious Burk,  attended the monthly social: Breakfast with the Mayor of the City of Fort Pierce. Mr. Jean had the opportunity to speak in front of some very prominent community leaders and business owners such as City Representative Larry Lee, Executive Director of Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF) Doug Coward, and Mayor Linda Hudson. Northport K-8 students are preparing to participate in the annual Relay for Life to benefit cancer research this year with a variety of activities. Students in grades K- five participated in a Valentine’s dance with music, food and their finest dress up clothes recently. A wonderful time was had by all students, parents and staff that attended the evening dance. Students in grades K-2 were visited by representatives from the American Cancer Society. On February 6th, students and staff of St. Lucie County were dressed in red in support of the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day to help raise awareness about heart disease in women. White City Elementary is a school which has 100% of its students receiving both free breakfast and free lunch based on the poverty level of our families. But often, when they go home, there is little or no food to eat. These families have been impacted by loss of jobs, illness or choosing to pay a utility bill over a food bill because of necessity. Maryann Umile was recognized at Bayshore Elementary by Superintendent Genelle Yost as Florida’s Senior Volunteer of the year in Florida for zone 3.   Mrs. Umile’s patience and dedication are evident in the over 15,000 hours of volunteering that she has given throughout the past fifteen years at Bayshore.   Pictured (from left to right) are Principal Lori Anne Reid, Superintendent of St. Lucie Public Schools Genelle Yost, Maryann Umile, District Volunteer Coordinator Martha Underwood and kindergarten teacher Annette Hawkins.

Students, Families, and Staff came together to celebrate our annual Valentine’s Dance!  The dance was a success with a photo booth, face painting, and tasty treats!  The DJ played hit after hit and everyone danced the night away!

Dr. Kevin Perry and Mrs. Genelle Yost spent time observing Mrs. Lisa McGuire’s third grade class playing chess.  The chess program called “First Move” was implemented this school year for all Second and Third grade classes at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School.  The children are learning how to use and deepen their critical thinking skills through this program. Fort Pierce Central (FPC) High’s BETA Club celebrated a winning performance January 16-17 in Orlando at the State BETA Conference. They placed 3rd out of 17 teams in the Quiz Bowl Competition and qualified to compete at National BETA Convention this summer in Nashville, TN. Since this was the first time they participated at State Convention the team was thrilled with their results! Congratulations Cobras!
