Windmill Point Elementary School invited students from Treasure Coast High School to join the elementary school students. These older “book buddies” had a wonderful time reading with their new friends!
Huddling around a bonfire with close friends on a crisp winter evening is something many of us can recall fondly. For the first time at “new” Central, this time-honored tradition returned on Friday, February 7th. As teachers and staff gathered around 5:30, the burn area was already set and ready to light. This beloved comedy has charmed audiences worldwide since its debut. The show follows the misadventures of a clever architect who finds his carefully orchestrated life spiraling into chaos when trying to maintain relationships with three international flight attendants. St. Lucie County School Board member Dr. Donna Mills recently visited Mariposa Elementary School and addressed third to fifth grade students in an assembly on Black History. Dr. Mills discussed the importance of caring about yourself and gave a background on her life.
Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS School Board Member, was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as April’s Woman of the Month. Dr. Mills was introduced by her daughter, United States District Court Judge Shaniek Maynard – a past recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Month Award. This made for a unique pairing for the mother and daughter team to both hold the Chamber’s “Woman of the Month” distinction. Morningside Elementary School fifth-grader Amelia Sides has always loved art, and now her art will be displayed on ART (Area Regional Transit)! Amelia’s watercolor painting, “River”, was chosen to adorn a new public transit bus or van in St. Lucie County. She attended a reception at the Civic Center on March 24th where her art was unveiled to the public. Be on the lookout for Amelia’s art moving around the county on a bus!
Sunny Booker, president of the Bluebird Foundation, and director of alternative education for SLPS presented seven middle and high school students with instruments during the January School Board Meeting. Bluebird Education Foundation serves St. Lucie County and provides musical instruments for youth with the goal of helping them pursue musical interests and supporting the love of music. The Foundation gifted violins, a cello, flute, trombone, and clarinet to students as part of the Recycling in the Key of E (RIKE) initiative in which the Foundation purchases or receives donations of gently used instruments.

This year Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition decided to make Blessing Bags and partnered with the Salvation Army of St. Lucie County to help the homeless in the community. This project was part of “Kindness Week” which was from January 6 -13, 2017 in conjunction with other activities planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Palm Pointe asked families to fill gallon ziploc bags with items people need on a daily basis. At SLW Centennial, Spanish students recently brought their language lessons to life by preparing and sharing homemade dishes in class. This hands-on culinary project was the culmination of their unit on food, ingredients, and formal commands, allowing students to apply their grammar skills in a meaningful and memorable way. Each student or group was tasked with creating a recipe entirely in Spanish, using the formal command structure they had been studying. On December 4, the Black Talon JROTC unit at SLW Centennial High School held its Annual Military Inspection (AMI), a key event where Area Manager Patrick Thurman inspected cadets’ uniforms, Navy knowledge, unit spaces, and drill performance. This important inspection ensures high standards are maintained. The event included a pass-in-review ceremony, showcasing the cadets’ drill skills and hard work. Family and friends attended, adding to the celebration. AMI provides cadets the chance to receive awards and demonstrate their progress. Congratulations to the Black Talon Drill Competition Team of SLW Centennial! The unit earned a spot and competed in the Lake Howell Area 11/12 NJROTC Florida State Drill competition in Winter Park, Florida. They competed against 20 other Navy JROTC units. The cadets showcased their exceptional skills and dedication, which led them to win 5th place in the Armed Exhibition Drill and 3rd place in Team Push-Ups. Additionally, they achieved high rankings, coming in 6th place for overall Team Athletics and secured 9th place in the State. Seventh grade students at CAST read poems from different female poets such as Emily Dickinson and Maya Angelou and discussed their meaning. They chose words from the poem that stood out to them and then created their own blackout poems using these words.
Black History recognition sparkled at Northport K-8 School recently. Principal Glenn Rustay gave opening remarks to students and faculty with a short story prepared by student Rubenson Charles called “If There Were No Black People.” The Northport K-8 band conducted by Derrick Williams played “Mercy,Mercy, Mercy”. The Northport choir ensemble directed by Shirley Lyons performed as well as a modern praise dance routine by Monique Robinson. Mrs. Hughes’s 6th Grade ELA classes have been working hard on their Black History Month projects for a few weeks now. Students chose a historical figure to research and then wrote an essay about them the first week of study. The following week they made a project out of their person to share with their classmates. Students had the choice to do a poster, PowerPoint presentation, flip book, or song/rap. The projects turned out beautifully and some of the virtual students even shared their online presentations via Microsoft Teams with the traditional classes.
