Literature Circles Help Students Understand Point Of View At SLWK8

St. Lucie West K-8 School students in Ms. Scavone’s 8th grade Gifted English Language Arts class have been reading “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton during Literature Circles. While reading, students have been focusing on learning about characters’ Point of View and completed a character chart during small group time. Each character chart included Point of View, an analysis of symbolism while citing textual evidence and identifying character traits. SUPER JAWSOME, SHARKS!

Literacy Week at Weatherbee Elementary

Literacy Week was a huge success at Weatherbee Elementary.  We had several planned events that helped promote literacy and get the students excited about reading.  To start the week off, students participated in the “Million Minute Marathon” where WBE read 17,421 minutes!  Another powerful activity was the “Buddy Reading” between different grade levels.  It was great to see the older students teaching the younger ones and the little ones sharing their fluency with older students who they look up to.  The week ended with our wonderful community members sharing their favorite book with the students.  The students really enjoyed hearing from … Read More

Literacy Week at SRE

      Parents, St. Lucie Sheriff’s officers, business leaders, and SLPS School Board members visited Savanna Ridge Elementary and read with students. Our students and Principal, Mrs. D’Jion Jackson-Harris, had a great time designing their “vocabulary hat” to encourage literacy and to use hands on creativity to learn new words. A few of our students with Mrs. Jackson-Harris “Taking Hats Off to Vocabulary” to enhance literacy skills.   Our dedicated teachers decorated their classroom doors to represent their class’s favorite book.

Literacy Week activities enjoyed by all Dan McCarty School

Students and staff at Dan McCarty School enjoyed participating in Florida’s “Take the Lead and Read!” Literacy Week recently. Activities were held to encourage and celebrate reading. Students decorated classroom doors focusing on the theme. Overall winners included K’Asha Wright (Elementary), Gina Clark (6th Grade) and Patty Mallon (7th/8th). Students contributed 115,256 minutes of reading to Florida’s Million Minutes of Reading goal for one day. A favorite event for all was Guest Reader Day. Literacy Proclamation

SLPS received the Celebrate Literacy Week Proclamation from Mayor Linda Hudson at the City of Fort Pierce Commission Meeting on January 17th. Celebrate Literacy Week is slated for January 23 – 27, 2017. Coordinator of Curriculum Jane Whitaker and Coordinator of Talent Development Didi Campbell spoke about upcoming events and thanked the City for its support of literacy throughout the District.

Literacy Partnership Kicks Off NP Summer Reading Initiative

Thanks to our church community partners, Mrs. Gruszka and Mrs. Majors, our summer reading initiative has begun. Children across Northport are selecting great books donated by First United Methodist Church of PSL. Pictured is Ms. Black’s fourth grade class with their book selections. ? Literacy Night At SLE Soaring To New Heights

On Thursday, January 21, 2016, students, parents, and staff at St. Lucie Elementary participated in Literacy Night. In addition to the many other events SLE hosts to promote and support family involvement, teachers and staff lovingly served dinner and provided a variety of skill-based literacy activities for parents and children to partake. Literacy Night is an innovative way to provide children and parents with various reading techniques. Literacy Is A Family Affair at Weatherbee

Weatherbee Elementary hosted a “Families Building Better Readers Night”  to teach parents how to help their child become the best reader they can be.  The VPK started things off with a performance of songs and dance.  Later, the parents rotated through sessions on how to help their child become a better reader, while students rotated through some engaging activities to help them become excited about reading.

Literacy Event at White City Elementary

Community Leaders read to the students at White City Elementary (WCE).  Students enjoyed listening to the book entitled, Wilford Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox.  It was another awesome literacy event at WCE.

Literacy Week was a success! Students participated in daily Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) time. Students got cozy with a good book! Lions International Peace Poster Contest

These students were part of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest with the Fort Pierce Lions Club. Ferlie Fabre (LPA), with her sister, took first place in the international Peace Poster Contest. Muabohn Dahn (LPA), with her father, won third place. A student from Southern Oaks, Emily Barkheimer, no pics, received second place. The First place entry will go on to represent our area in the regional portion of the competition. Teacher Judi Hueter hope that the wonderful accomplishments of her young artists will spark other St. Lucie students to participate in future events!

Lincoln Park’s Robert Bacchus earns four year scholarship at international science fair

Two Lincoln Park Academy students won four-year scholarships at the recent Intel ISEF International Science and Engineering Fair held in Phoenix, Arizona, for their projects. The students were able to attend the International Fair with support from the St. Lucie County Education Foundation’s Fund A Project, and were able to solicit and raise the funding needed to participate. Junior Robert Bacchus presented his project, “CancAARS: A Novel Therapeutic Target for Melanoma Tumorigenesis,” and won a special award, a four year scholarship to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, valued at $60,000.00.
