Literacy Week activities enjoyed by all Dan McCarty School

Students and staff at Dan McCarty School enjoyed participating in Florida’s “Take the Lead and Read!” Literacy Week recently. Activities were held to encourage and celebrate reading. Students decorated classroom doors focusing on the theme. Overall winners included K’Asha Wright (Elementary), Gina Clark (6th Grade) and Patty Mallon (7th/8th). Students contributed 115,256 minutes of reading to Florida’s Million Minutes of Reading goal for one day. A favorite event for all was Guest Reader Day. Community members read and shared their love of reading to students. One day was devoted to students performing Reader’s Theatre scripts. Character Dress Up Day for the elementary students and Definition Dress Up for middle school ended the week. Middle school students created costumes depicting a word they have learned this year. Even staff members joined the fun! Pictured is sixth grade science teacher Judy Weekes, who came as the word evaporation for Definition Dress Up Day.
