The whole school participated in a PBIS event for making great choices at a PBIS celebration on February 26th. The students all danced and sang to their favorite songs and had a great time. Northport proudly celebrates our very diverse culture every day, and Thursday, February 25, 2016, was especially special at the school. On this day, Northport included a program that hosted pioneers from our county and also all the Northport past principals. Kindergarten students in Mrs. Kourtney Burton’s class at Frances K. Sweet have been learning about Dr. Seuss and completing various activities to celebrate his many books. Students sampled green eggs and ham and then graphed whether or not they liked them. Dr. McEwen and Mrs. Barr organized a celebration of Black History Month with an assembly for students and staff at the Education Center of St. Lucie County’s Juvenile Detention Center. The assembly followed the national theme for Black History Month, Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memory. In attendance were 38 students, all teaching staff and DJJ staff members. Dr. McEwen presented the assembly, six students recited poetry, Mrs. Barr reviewed and explained the theme, Mr. Hinder shared moments in Black History, and Mr. Small presented the historical sites of Ft. A select group of 8th grade students from Lincoln Park Academy participated in the 1st Middle School Great Explorations event in conjunction with Indian River State College.  Students were able to get hands-on experience with Green Room technology and video production, as well as laser, Allied Health, and Robotics fields, while speaking with professors and students about the school-college-work connection.  The all day event was intended to provide a “spark” for these students who will soon be entering high school and beginning their college exploration journey.              

Our young scientists exemplified what Northport K-8 strives to achieve: education , practice of the basic traits of moral and ethical behavior, development of intellectual curiosity, logical thinking using problem solving and reasoning skills, and pride in achievement! At the 28th Annual Awards Ceremony of the Saint Lucie County Regional Science and Engineering Stem Competition, category award recipients included Taygen Pennella (first place in math and computational sciences), Rosette Garcia (second place in biomedical and health science), Addison Searcy (third place in animal science), and Alicia Morrow (third place in cellular/molecular biology and biochemisry). Dr. Kelly, President of Florida Atlantic University and Debra Snyder, Principal of Palm Pointe tour the school Friday afternoon.  The President was showered with gifts as a token of appreciation for the partnership the University has with the School.

Kindergarten students at Frances K. Sweet loved having employees from the City of Fort Pierce volunteer in the classrooms.  Morgan Haupt’s students: Carter Stokes, Tyler Li, and Sienna Mills enjoyed listening to a story and playing a game of sight word Bingo with Kevin Browning.

Dirk Smith, Plant Manager of Village Green Environmental Studies School, has implemented a fun and rewarding recycling program.  Each week the classes of VGESS compete to see who will win a coveted Sundae Party for the most material recycled in one week.  The incentive program has been a huge success. The Odyssey of the Mind team from Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School performed at Regional Competition at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL.  The team not only qualified for state, they received the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award.  This award is the highest award in the Odyssey of the Mind program.  For this award, judges are asked to only make nominations if exceptional creativity is exhibited.  Comments on their award included, “The Division I team went above and beyond the requirements of the problem.  The team was incredibly insightful and advanced for elementary students.”  Congratulations, Fairlawn Odyssey Team on a job … Read More

FPMSA fifth graders celebrated making great choices at a PBIS celebration on February 19th. Friends, snacks, games, and crafts were part of the fun enjoyed by all who attended. Mr. Darrell M.Schwartz, history teacher at Treasure Coast High School, announces that about two months ago the Gaming Club was created on our campus. The purpose of the club is to bring all students together who have an interest in friendship and fun competition. The club includes Video and Computer Gaming along with Board Games and Card Games. The club meets weekly and has grown to over 40 students attending with very limited promotion.   Fifth grade students at Morningside Elementary learned all about body systems with hands-on activities including viewing how air expands real pig lungs, touching and seeing real animal organs, and learning where all the inner body systems are located.  Finally, the students were shown how by tapping on the body, they could tell whether the body part was solid or hollow.  The head sounded hollow much to the students’ surprise!    

Students in third grade at Morningside Elementary each received a dictionary from the Rotary Club of Port Saint Lucie. Students were excited as they looked through the pages at pictures and new words in their very own dictionary.  Thank you, Rotary, for your wonderful gift!

Northport K-8 history instructor, Bob Burdge, and eleven Northport middle grades students represented Northport at the SLPS District History Fair held at Indian River State College recently. Students explored and presented exciting and informative topics such as, “How Did the Women of the 1920’s Explore Their Rights and Encounter Change?” “The Significance of the California Gold Rush,” and “Amelia Earhart’s Exploration of Aircrafts: The Development of New Ideas.” Mr. Burdge is celebrating his last year as not only a colorful and unparalleled history instructor for thirty-five and a half years, but as a History Fair Coordinator for at least twenty … Read More

Fifth grade students in Mrs. Logue’s science class at FPMSA explored how when the environment changes, differences between individuals allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce while others die or move to new locations. Students had 10 seconds to pick up as many beans as possible. They discovered that they picked up more beans of the color that contrasted with the paper they were on. The beans similar in color to the paper represented the animals that have a better chance of survival due to the physical adaptation of camouflage. Pictured are Jarvis Jerger and Cindy Hernandez

Lindsey Perez joined the Allapattah Flats family last school year and has made it her home. You never know what you will find when you enter the doors of Mrs. Perez’s science class. Hands-on, minds-on learning is always taking place as students engage in lessons designed to get them excited about science and all its wonders. The students from the photo competed in SkillsUSA Regional Competition in Orlando, FL last week, Thursday, February 18.  Students were in the Community Service Competition and won 1st Place for Region 3. Student Names: Olivia Wallman, Arielly Dias, and Arthur Waddell Students in this competition had the following purpose: To evaluate local chapter activities that benefit the community and to recognize excellence and professionalism in the area of community service. This event also enables the community to become aware of the outstanding work being performed by career and technical education students.  

The month of February is dedicated to celebrating and honoring the many achievements and contributions made by African Americans to the economic, cultural, and political development of America. On February 19th, Donna Washington joined Gaines Academy in celebrating African American culture through the art of storytelling. Ms. Washington is a renowned story teller and author who had student and teachers of all ages captivated with her narratives. Thank you, Ms. Washington!
