First Grade Students from Ms. McGowan’s class are participating in the Embryology Countdown in partnership with the St. Lucie County 4H. As part of the program, students participate in virtual lessons, make predictions, and document their observations.

Lincoln Park Academy highlighted the school’s achievements and greyhound pride in this year’s St. Lucie County Fair booth. The theme was, “School’s Shining Bright Under Carnival Lights.” The booth featured a ceramic greyhound posed as the school’s fortune teller, themed photographs of our administration, and various items from our sports, music, and art programs. Lincoln Park Academy won second place in the high school division and received a $500.00 award. We would like to thank Dermody Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics for sponsoring this award and the St. Lucie County Fair Association.
5th-grade students in Mrs. Murphy’s dance studio are rehearsing their choreography for an upcoming Flash Mob performance on campus. Meanwhile, in Ms. Swabon’s art class, students are creating Brazilian Carnival masks as a part of the Flash Mob costumes.
In third grade, Mrs. Roti’s class completed a Scientific inquiry activity. Students observed how vascular tissue within plant stems move water, minerals, and nutrients throughout the plant.
For the second year in a row, Coach Nick Zoerhof and Assistant Coach Becky Carranza led the Southport Middle School soccer team to the final county championship. The team was excited to receive their first-place trophy after winning the final game!
Kindergarteners and first graders in Mrs. Roberts’ class paired up virtually with students at Dale Cassens to buddy read Dr. Seuss books. Students met up using TEAMS. At CAST, we foster our love for reading early!
Seventh and eighth graders in Mr. Tobias’ Band class took advantage of the beautiful Saint Lucie weather to practice for their upcoming performance outside. We can’t wait to hear them on performance day! They sounded great!
Kindergarten and First grade had so much fun during our annual St. Lucie West K-8 School Character Book Parade! During the week, students in both MySchool Virtual and brick and mortar read a favorite book, completed an engaging book report project, and then, on Friday, dressed-up as their favorite characters from their books! During the parade, students got to show their classmates and teachers their character book costumes. Kindergarten and First grade teachers joined the fun by dressing-up too. WAY TO GO SHARKS!
Traditional and virtual students were able to celebrate and exercise through a school-wide Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart activity. Village Green Environmental Studies School did an AMAZING job and at last count, the school has raised $11,808.00, with donations still coming in. Our top fundraiser was kindergartner, Miliana Gorman, who earned all the prizes including a gold medal and a cape! We are so proud of our students.
The Kids Heart Challenge is an annual event the students participate in at Oak Hammock K-8. Students in Coach Branim’s K-5 physical education resources class learned about heart health while hosting a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The virtual fundraiser event had a total of 130 elementary student participants who raised $7,430.00 this school year. The students were incentivized by having the opportunity to smash, Coach Branim with a “Pie in the Face” if they raised $100 or more. The “Pie in the Face” was a success! Students in the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University program are spacing out in unexpected ways! Fort Pierce Central is one of 12 high schools across Florida chosen to participate in the initiative. The students’ objectives are to fully check out the drone operating program and make necessary adjustments before launch. Students are seen assembling drones in support of ERAU’s new Flight Test Engineering Program. In addition, students shared a zoom call briefing on space flight with Dr. Jose Nunez, Chief of Research and Technology at NASA.
Fort Pierce Central wrestling closed the season yesterday in epic form! For the first time in 27 years, Fort Pierce Central placed in the top 3 teams in the state (1994)! For the first time in 25 years (1996) Fort Pierce Central now has a state champ – Gabriel Jacas at 220 pounds. White City Elementary had a successful virtual family night that included a prize wheel, the wave, and lots of smiles. WCE’s Social Emotional Learning committee collaborated with the SLPS SEL department to host the virtual event on Teams. Eighty participants attended the event to learn about Social Emotional Learning at WCE and how to reinforce skills at home. Thank you to our community partners, Chick-Fil-A, Applebee’s, Golden Corral, and Super Play USA, for sponsoring our giveaways.
Talk about a corny guest speaker! Sixth-grade students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class received a virtual visit from Bill Johnston of “Kansas Corn STEM.” The students learned all about how Ethanol is made from corn and explored the benefits of using Ethanol when compared to traditional fossil fuels. These students are in the middle of their green-energy unit on Biomass. They are also working on designing and building their own Biomass demonstration projects.
Fort Pierce Westwood students from Ms. Mildred Brown’s Criminal Justice program, Mrs. Ursula Johnson’s Digital Media program, and Mrs. M.E. Musgrave’s Medical program joined the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team for a live presentation. Students learned about the significance of the drone team to our law enforcement agencies and community, sUAS Part 107 industry certification, and career opportunities after high school. Sergeant Wes Harbrin organized this event for SLPS students enrolled in these various programs. Representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone team hosted a live demonstration for Criminal Justice and Law Academy students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School. Special thanks to SLPS Criminal Justice Advisory Board member, Sergeant Wes Harbrin from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for setting up this event! Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s students were engaged and learned about skills, training, and career options for sUAS industry certification and the connection of drones to the field of law enforcement.
Mariposa Elementary is acknowledging student success in Mr. Evans’ class by celebrating Music in our Schools Month. Students are passionately demonstrating their musical skill sets for their teachers, classmates, and families by sharing songs and activities they learned in music class. Students in upper grades share how their younger siblings are singing catchy songs nonstop at home. Meanwhile, some K-2 students are gaining a head-start in the music curriculum through older siblings sharing their wealth of musical knowledge.
