Community leaders, businesses, and churches recently joined forces to ensure that children and their families could share a meal this past Thanksgiving. Meals were distributed from Garden City Early Learning Academy to 1207 families, feeding approximately 5,400 individuals. In June, the Office of Teaching and Learning (Secondary Programs) brought approximately 70 rising seniors to visit the University of Florida or the University of Central Florida. The 70 students represented all of our comprehensive high schools. This academically driven and respectful group of rising seniors had the opportunity to receive a 90-minute walking tour of the campuses. They also received a 30-minute Q&A session with Admissions as well as ate lunch in a student dining hall and topped it off with some browsing in the bookstore. The Instrumental department at CAST put on a Modern Band Holiday Rock Concert last December. The performance featured students from grades fifth through eighth, showcasing the following: Keyboard Ensemble, Pre-Band Nuvo Ensemble, Ukulele Ensemble, keyboard solos/duets, and various CAST Rock Bands. The music performed ranged from the holiday classics to current pop-rock. The CAST instrumental program will continue to perform with these types of ensembles. Rock on, performers!
The CAST Middle School Dance Team, under the direction of Mrs. Megan Murphy, auditioned and were accepted to perform at Disney Springs in Orlando, Florida. They will be performing Saturday, December 18th at 12:45pm on the Waterside Stage in Disney Springs! Get ready, the CAST Dance Team is Disney bound and ready to dazzle the stage!
Before Spring Break, students and staff at CAST participated in a colorful spirit week. Each day, a different color of the rainbow was selected to spread cheer.
Bus riders at Parkway Elementary participate in weekly Bus Bucks shopping! Once a week, students have an opportunity to cash in their earned Bus Bucks for a treat in the treasure box. Students earn Bus Bucks by exhibiting exemplary behavior while transitioning on and off the bus, as well as riding the bus. Students are working hard at Parkway Elementary, and are earning rewards to “shop ’til they drop.”
Third-grade students at Morningside Elementary are going mad over multiplication! Through engaging stations, academic games, and small group instruction, we are working hard to ensure all of our Blue Jays are learning every day. Each year, all of the Westgate K-8 students line the sides of the parking lot to enjoy the Westgate marching band, the 8th grade carolers and of course, Santa. It is Westgate’s favorite holiday tradition.

Middle school artists were inspired by the book, The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald. The artists discussed Ewalt’s photography project. Artists were then asked to identify the part of themselves that represents the best of who they are. Learning basic photography skills, artists took self portraits of the best part of them. Diving deeper into their positive self- image, artists brainstormed reasons why this was their best part. They added reasons to their self portraits using photo editing software. The Duncan Awards are held annually in room 617 at Southern Oaks Middle School. The awards were created by sixth-grade math teacher, Mr. Lioba Duncan. Mr. Duncan gives the awards at the end of semester one to acknowledge high achievement and vast improvement on district tests.
