Northport K-8 students are preparing to participate in the annual Relay for Life to benefit cancer research this year with a variety of activities. On February 6th, students and staff of St. Lucie County were dressed in red in support of the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day to help raise awareness about heart disease in women. White City Elementary is a school which has 100% of its students receiving both free breakfast and free lunch based on the poverty level of our families. But often, when they go home, there is little or no food to eat. These families have been impacted by loss of jobs, illness or choosing to pay a utility bill over a food bill because of necessity. Students, Families, and Staff came together to celebrate our annual Valentine’s Dance!  The dance was a success with a photo booth, face painting, and tasty treats!  The DJ played hit after hit and everyone danced the night away!

Dr. Kevin Perry and Mrs. Genelle Yost spent time observing Mrs. Lisa McGuire’s third grade class playing chess.  The chess program called “First Move” was implemented this school year for all Second and Third grade classes at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School.  The children are learning how to use and deepen their critical thinking skills through this program. Fort Pierce Central (FPC) High’s BETA Club celebrated a winning performance January 16-17 in Orlando at the State BETA Conference. They placed 3rd out of 17 teams in the Quiz Bowl Competition and qualified to compete at National BETA Convention this summer in Nashville, TN. Since this was the first time they participated at State Convention the team was thrilled with their results! Congratulations Cobras! James Dean from Thinking Maps Skyped students in Mrs. de la Cruz Kindergarten class at Savanna Ridge Elementary and read the book, Tough Boris by Mem Fox.  Students in VPK through fifth grade enjoyed special guest readers from the community, district personnel and volunteers that came to read their favorite stories to students in classrooms.

Palm Pointe Educational Research School won the St. Lucie County Middle School Soccer Championship on Saturday, February 7.  The coach of the team was Mr. Robert Santoro, Physical Education teacher and athletic director at the school.  “It was truly a team effort throughout the day as both the offense and defense had outstanding performances,”  said  Mrs. Santoro. The Jaguar Battalion began the drill season with an amazing start. They earned first place overall at the first meet held at Jupiter High School. Our drill team competed against 7 other schools. St. Lucie Elementary families and students enjoyed our celebration of Literacy Week when they received free books during lunch in the courtyard.

Literacy Week was a huge success at Weatherbee Elementary.  We had several planned events that helped promote literacy and get the students excited about reading.  To start the week off, students participated in the “Million Minute Marathon” where WBE read 17,421 minutes!  Another powerful activity was the “Buddy Reading” between different grade levels.  It was great to see the older students teaching the younger ones and the little ones sharing their fluency with older students who they look up to.  The week ended with our wonderful community members sharing their favorite book with the students.  The students really enjoyed hearing from … Read More

Students at Savanna Ridge Elementary enjoyed celebrating Literacy Week 2015 with Books, Bingo and Baked Ziti night.  Students and families came out for a delicious baked ziti dinner and played multiple rounds of Bingo.  There were many smiling faces as students were able to come up on stage and pick a book of their choice after winning!

Frances K Sweet celebrated Literacy Week by inviting dads in to read to classes.  The students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class enjoyed being read to by Reverend Ham.  His son, Thomas, was beyond thrilled  to have his dad read one of his favorite books to his class. 

Bayshore Elementary School students participated in Celebrate Literacy Week!  Fourth and fifth grade students had a visit from author Michael Anthony Steele who shared his experiences as a writer and screenwriter.  Pictured is Alana Edwards, fourth grade student from Ms. Duprey’s class, with Michael Anthony Steele after signing a poster of his latest release, the novelization of Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.
