Forest Grove Students Appreciate Aces for Kids at Hope Day

We at Forest Grove Middle School have implemented a stupendous initiative to foster a strong bond between the students and their Ace. Each month the students will vote on the Ace that inspires them to succeed academically and flourish positively socially. The students have been informed that the Ace with the most votes will attend a very special lunch with the administrative team at Forest Grove. The students have been participating in droves. This incentive reminds teachers that they are valued by their students and it gives the students a sense of responsibility in choosing and honoring the staff and … Read More

STEM Friction Activity

Forest Grove STEM Activity Creates Static

STEM students are having a great time while reviewing different kinds of forces. They worked as a team creating friction on the balloons for the balloons to be able to lift up the tissue paper due to the electrostatic force. Static friction acts on objects when they are resting on a surface. For example, if you are hiking in the woods, there is static friction between your shoes and the trail each time you put down your foot. Without this static friction, your feet would slip out from under you, making it difficult to walk. In fact, that’s exactly what … Read More

Forest Grove Participates in Lagoon Field Study

On Saturday, October 24th, current and former Forest Grove MOA Prep students participated in a critical field study to monitor the various aspects of the Indian River Lagoon. Due to the current pandemic, this study could not be done en mass as usual but instead in smaller sections on the weekend. These pictures highlight our Bulldogs (both former and current students as well as teachers) and their adventures throughout the day! Students were tasked with measuring tides, checking salinity, and analyzing chemical parameters in our lagoon. While safety was of utmost priority, our students were able to successfully obtain all … Read More

FGMS MOA

Forest Grove MOA Students Explore the Smithsonian Museum

Great things are happening at Forest Grove Middle School! Our 6th grade Marine Oceanographic Academy students identified different habitats such as the habitats in the Indian River Lagoon, the near-shore waters, and the Oculina reef. Students also participated in a scavenger hunt, examining the 6 different tanks modeling the different habitats searching for the marine organisms that occupy each. In addition, the students had an inside tour of how the aquarium cares for their organisms. Finally, students observed and identified plankton from a sample of water from the dock along the Fort Pierce Inlet. At FGMS our students are exposed … Read More

Forest Grove MOA Students Display Life-Size Whale at Festival

FGMS MOA students engineered a life size orca whale 25 feet long x 11 feet tall and put it on display at the IRL Science Festival in Ft. Pierce on Saturday, October 22.  With the help of their teachers Ms. Cole and Mr. Stinnette, students in grades 6-8 and their parents spent 30 hours after school creating the whale out of plastic sheeting and Duck brand duct tape.  Students began by cutting a rectangular sheet of plastic into shape and taped it together. Then it was blown up with a bounce house fan, deflated, cut and taped again until they … Read More

Forest Grove MOA Prep Students Continue Field Studies

On January 30, 2021, current 8th grade MOA Prep students joined together with 9th grade MOA (all former Forest Grove MOA students) in collecting data for ORCA (Ocean Research and Conservation Association, Inc.). The students continue to participate in this field study by collecting physical, chemical and biological data. This data will be used for a long term, quarterly study on the health of the Indian river Lagoon. Forest Grove Middle students visited by Holocaust survivor

Olga Drucker, a Holocaust Kindertransport child (http://www.kindertransport.org/), visited with Ilyssa Greene’s sixth grade language arts students. Mrs. Drucker read excerpts from Kindertransport (http://us.macmillan.com/kindertransport/OlgaDrucker), her autobiography, which is a children’s book that covers her six years in England and reunion with her parents in 1945. She spoke with students about the impact separation and reunification had on her and her family. She also impressed upon students the importance of never allowing another Holocaust to become part of their history. Kindertransport rescued thousands of German and European Jews by sending Jewish children to live abroad with families who were often not Jewish. … Read More

Forest Grove Middle students use the metric system

All Forest Grove Middle School students competed in the second annual Forest  Grove Metric Olympics. Students traveled through a series of eight stations that aimed to give them hands-on experience in estimating and measuring mass, volume, distance and time using the Metric System. This activity allowed students to manipulate math and science in a fun, competitive setting. Pictured, from left, Harry Jeune, Ja’Harold Wright, Linto Stil, Antonio Presley, Etienne Desir and Donald Gibson.

Forest Grove Middle students triumph in book battle

Sixth grade students, pictured from left, Genesis Gibson, Derrick Davis, Jessica Hoyt, Zach Roach, and Christen Bailey listen intently to the Battle of the Books question for their team. The annual Battle of the Books contest matches a student team against a faculty team to answer comprehension questions. This year, the sixth and eighth grade student teams won their battle, while the seventh grade faculty team won their battle. This event coordinates literature study among the reading classes, and creates a positive school-wide literacy culture.

Forest Grove Middle students study molecular structure

Over 700 Forest Grove students performed a lab in which they extracted DNA from a fresh strawberry during their science class. Sixth graders learned about cells and cell theory. In seventh grade, their knowledge expanded through studying how DNA determines the genetic structure of an organism and makes each individual unique. Eighth graders continued to expand this concept by concentrating on the way that cells and DNA contribute to body systems, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration. Following this hands on activity in a wet lab setting, students could not only see, but hold and stretch the strawberries’ DNA to see the … Read More

Forest Grove Middle students study genetics

Students in Andrea Anicito’s seventh grade science classes at Forest Grove Middle School were given a visual scenario in which they were presented with a parent’s genetic information. Students then had to create a punnett square to determine the probability of the offspring’s traits. The final part of the project was to build a “spud”. Because there were traits that showed other than 100% probability, the offspring all looked a little different, just like siblings. Together, the class created a potato head family.

Forest Grove Middle students get to know each other

Students in Charlene Carter’s reading classes at Forest Grove Middle School got to know each other recently using a series of activities meant to gather information about classmates as well as build knowledge of thinking maps, note taking techniques, Kagan structures, and cloze sentence templates. Pictured, from left, are Cicilio Ramirez and Enoc Lopez.

Forest Grove Middle students create anti-bullying projects

Forest Grove Middle School reading coach Melodee Hickman has created an anti-bullying unit in her reading classes. The seventh grade class created Thinking Maps on a variety of topics and skills about bullying, including comparing and contrasting, classification, description and higher level thinking questions. Pictured are students signing a pledge to support a bully free zone. Students will also soon begin a Random Acts of Kindness unit, which will include an interactive PowerPoint slide show, an anticipation guide, Kagan strategies, higher level thinking skills and most important, will lead into the book The Bystander to be read by all seventh grade … Read More
