Mrs. Ridle, media specialist, explained to Shirley Gomez that when reading graphic novels, it’s important to ‘read’ the pictures AND the words. The picture of the map shows that the location of the popular graphic novel, Sunny Side Up, takes place in our hometown! If we hadn’t looked closely, we would have missed that really cool detail!

Fairlawn Elementary School made the SWEET 16 for TTM’s National Contest – The March Math Madness. This means that across the entire country, Fairlawn is in the final 16 schools! This contest allows schools to compete against schools around the country to decide who has the highest average of passed lessons per active student! This is a National Contest with thousands of schools participating!
The Odyssey of the Mind team from Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School performed at Regional Competition at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL. The team not only qualified for state, they received the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award. This award is the highest award in the Odyssey of the Mind program. For this award, judges are asked to only make nominations if exceptional creativity is exhibited. Comments on their award included, “The Division I team went above and beyond the requirements of the problem. Congratulations to Ashlynne Murray, a fourth grade student from Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School, who placed first in the MLK Spelling Bee. Other Fairlawn participants included Benny Leger, Ricardo Ramirez, and Megan Brooks. Fairlawn is proud of their super spellers!
