Norman Frajman, an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor and President of the Child Survivors/Hidden Children of the Holocaust group, traveled from Boynton Beach to Oak Hammock K – 8 in Port St. Lucie with 20 members of the organization for what has become an annual commemorative event – Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Best School Overall was determined by the combined scores of the male and female drill teams.  The Jaguar Battalion Drill Team competed against 18 other schools and earned first place overall. The competition takes place April 22 in Davie FL, at the NFL Training Facility. The Chefs have perfected their Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli recipe and are ready for the competition! Christopher Gomez at Frances K. Sweet was surprised to find out he won the 2017 Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest for fifth grade. The City of Port St. Lucie Utility Systems, in conjunction with Florida Section American Water Works Association (FSAWWA), held the contest for all St. Lucie County students in order for them to better understand the importance of water conservation. Lincoln Park Academy’s 3-dimmensional art classes worked collaboratively to create a red, white, and blue Floridian inspired booth. The students each formed an individual red, white, or blue flower to contribute to a large hanging garden mural. The main focal point of the booth was a large eagle relief that read, “Art can change people and people change the world.” Ms. Duran’s advanced classes produced large “Big Head” sculptures inspired by influential Floridians and characters such as Tim Tebow, Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck. Students from C. A. Moore and Lakewood Park Elementary gathered for a Spring Break Tutorial Camp. Working alongside staff, they were able to spend time on reading and math while also enjoying extracurricular activities. During the camp, students were thrilled with the Oxbow Center’s Reptile Show, and many special community guests stopped by to spend time with students including officers from the Fort Pierce Police Department, Mr.Dan Frank, and Dr. Kevin Perry.          

On Saturday, March 18, the LPA Key Club provided assistance to the Main Street Fort Pierce program by sponsoring and promoting the Coloring Wall during the Taste of the Sea and Sandy Shoes Seafood Festival in downtown Fort Pierce. Designed as a means to recruit festival participants in an entertaining and creative activity, the Coloring Wall was very successful. Throughout the day, several Key Club members were able to entice young and old alike to express themselves with crayons, paints, chalk and markers. On February 26, two teams competed in the Regional Tournament at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach and both teams are headed to the Florida State Tournament on the campus of the University of Central Florida on April 8. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from K to 12th grades. Ms. Mellion’s class created Leprechaun Traps for STEAM challenge. They used their critical thinking skills to figure out the best way to catch a leprechaun. The class voted for their top three favorites and they received a prize. All students received Gator Bucks (PBIS) for participation. Can’t wait to see how many leprechauns are caught over break!  

Grace Packs is an organization serving St. Lucie County that provides weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply. Currently, Grace Packs provides service to 20 schools in St. Lucie County, thus relieving the burden many children endure by being hungry. This past weekend, Grace Packs and St. Lucie Public Schools volunteers supported the Pan Florida Challenge — a two-day, 180 mile bike ride to end kids’ hunger — one meal at a time.   The ride started in Naples on March 11th and ended in Fort Pierce on March 12. Mariposa Elementary’s Award Winning Odyssey of the Mind Team A team of seven creative minds from Mariposa Elementary came together to save creativity through problem solving. Mariposa’s Odyssey of the Mind team went to a regional competition in Riviera Beach, where they won 2nd place!
