Lawnwood Elementary Celebrates DAR Essay Contest Winners Fifth grade students in Mrs. Collins’ accelerated class recently participated in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Essay Contest, demonstrating strong writing skills and a deep understanding of American history. This year’s theme, “Lunch with a Signer,” invited students to imagine having a conversation with a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Students wrote from a first-person perspective, blending historical accuracy with creative storytelling to bring these important figures to life. Mrs. Coombs’s 5th-grade scientists turned their classroom into a real science lab! They dove into an exciting investigation to compare and contrast common minerals by their physical properties—hardness, color, luster, cleavage, and streak color. Equipped with scientific tools like streak plates and magnifiers, students made careful observations, tested samples, and recorded data just like professional geologists. They worked in teams, asked thoughtful questions, and discovered how each property helps identify minerals. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Mrs. Wright’s fourth-grade class at Lawnwood Elementary took a vibrant journey into the heart of Guatemala. Through an engaging and hands-on cultural exploration, students learned about the country’s rich traditions, colorful history, and unique geography. From traditional foods and music to famous landmarks, the class discovered what makes Guatemala such a special part of the Hispanic world. Mrs. Wright emphasized the importance of honoring diversity and recognizing the valuable contributions of Hispanic cultures to our global community. NPK-8 celebrated Read Across America school-wide with the help of the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Department, the City of Port St. Lucie Police Department, the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, the Big Brother Big Sisters of Indian River County, and our partners in education, First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. Overall, the school had 31 volunteer readers who helped spread the joy of reading to our students. On January 27th, Palm Pointe’s K–2 students and their families enjoyed a wonderful evening at a Family UFLI Literacy Night: From Sounds to Stories! Students proudly showcased the foundational reading skills they’ve been developing in class, from letter–sound knowledge to blending and decoding. Families participated in hands-on activities that deepened understanding of early literacy, while parents learned practical strategies to support reading growth at home. Oak Hammock students, home of the Ospreys, soared to new heights during literacy week! Students participated in multiple dress-up days focused on literacy themes like “Reading Makes You Bright!”. Students and staff dressed up in neon colors, read with flashlights, and participated in reading outside. The largest employee giving awards were presented to Treasure Coast High School with a total of $1,920, Morningside Elementary with a total of $1,693, Northport K-8 with a total of $1,165, and Southport Middle School with a total of $864. On August 10, 2018, Port St. Lucie High School facilitated laptop distribution and assigned laptops to upperclassmen (10th grade and up). When students and parents entered the school, they were greeted by multiple Jaguar Battalion cadets who were ready to guide them and answer any questions they might have. Guests entered the Media center to make their payment and received schedules for the school year. Then, they were directed to the cafeteria where additional cadets assisted in handing out laptops and laptop chargers. Cadet 1st Sergeant Elyas Cardenas is pictured at his post located in the cafeteria.
Students in Julia Melville’s second grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary have been studying different types of landforms and bodies of water in Social Studies. Pictured, from left, Yasmine Joseph-Beausejour, Armani Richardson, Emma Brosnihan, and Megan Kriska are building models of landforms, using salt dough, and then painting the landforms and bodies of water. Students were excited to be able to use the knowledge they had gained, to represent the landforms in a physical state.
Lakewood Park staff made some very special summer visits. Staff members hopped on a school bus and dropped off backpacks with summer supplies and food, as well as celebrated all students scoring a level 5! A huge shoutout to Transportation for supplying a school bus to transport our staff members, supplies, and yard signs! Congrats to all our Falcons for their hard work this year preparing for state testing. We are so proud of you!
