Lawnwood Elementary 5th-Grade Scientists in Action

Mrs. Coombs’s 5th-grade scientists turned their classroom into a real science lab! They dove into an exciting investigation to compare and contrast common minerals by their physical properties—hardness, color, luster, cleavage, and streak color. Equipped with scientific tools like streak plates and magnifiers, students made careful observations, tested samples, and recorded data just like professional geologists. They worked in teams, asked thoughtful questions, and discovered how each property helps identify minerals. The students were fully immersed in the activity as they realized science isn’t just about reading—it’s about exploring, experimenting, and having fun! Acting as scientists gave them a chance to think critically and experience hands-on learning that connects directly to the standards. With Mrs. Coombs guiding and supporting their curiosity, these young investigators proved that learning can be both challenging and exciting. Science came alive in the best way possible!”
