In celebration of Women in Art, CAST middle school Graphic Arts students listened to a story written and illustrated by Croatian artist Smiljana Coh called The Seven Princesses. Each princess in the story had specific likes and talents – from architecture to art to athletics, and everything in between. Students were then instructed to imagine themselves as designers inside the kingdom where they were hired by one of the princesses to create a business card for their entrepreneurial venture. The students learned a quick overview of the anatomy of a business card and created a card fit for a princess.

St. Lucie County’s public transportation system – Area Regional Transit (ART) – recently announced a countywide Call to Artists. Oak Hammock K-8 elementary students were up for the challenge of smashing a pie in the face of Coach Branim. The Kids Heart Challenge is a fun and exciting event where students learn about their hearts while helping others by raising money for the American Heart Association. It prepares our students for success through physical and emotional well-being as they learned the importance of being healthy. Third-grade students at CAST researched famous female poets such as Amanda Gorman, Rupi Kaur, and Mary Ann Hoberman and recorded important facts. Students selected their favorite poem and illustrated how the poem made them feel. These pictures came together into a beautiful “poet-tree”! Fourth-grade students learned about female Highwayman artist Mary Ann Carroll and collaborated to make a landscape portrait. They also listened to railroad songs from Zora Neale Hurston and dissected the lyrics to better understand this period in Florida History.

First Grade Students of Lawnwood are learning how magnifiers make things appear bigger and help people see things they could not see without them. Students were engaged as they explored different areas around the campus.  

Mosaic Digital Academy instructor, Mrs. Linton, offered her 8th Graders the opportunity to participate in frog dissection lab experiences on campus this week. Lincoln Park Academy Students4H2O had a great time this Saturday at Stuart Memorial Park as they partook in Water Fest 2022! Lincoln Park Academy was proud to represent St. Lucie County at this environmental conservation event. Hundreds of attendees stopped by to check out their activity focused on upcycling egg cartons as planting pots. Congratulations to the men’s track team for winning 1st place and the women’s track team for winning 2nd place at the Saint Lucie County Championship. Rolen Gauthier, Richelle Williams, and Nikayia Wilder were trailblazers for their teams, with Nikayia breaking the school record in shot put! Cobra athletes did an amazing job and a big thanks to all Cobra family members for their support! According to junior Joh’Rissa McBurnie- practice makes perfect! Never missing a practice led to her shattering her personal best in the 100-meter hurdles.

Students from VPK to fifth grade celebrated the school year together during the Spring Fling on Friday, March 28. The dance theme was Alice in Wonderland, and students were encouraged to dress up. Other activities included big and little yard games, food, dancing, and face painting donated by the school PTO president.   A special guest, the Queen of Hearts, made an appearance for photo opportunities. Contest winners for Best Dressed, Best Costume, and Best Mad Hatter were also awarded. 

Mrs. Thomaselli decided to head to the park where she met up with her 3rd Grade students to develop learning concepts further! When students took the 3rd Grade FSA Practice Test on campus earlier in the month, Mrs. Thomaselli analyzed the practice test results and created fun outdoor review activities to deepen learning on the concepts students struggled with most. First Grade BLASTED OFF into reading today with their first of three themed CRUNCH TIME Reading Days. Students participated in cooperative research projects about planets. They made informational books, posters, and crafts! Teachers during this time assisted students in power reading groups where they practiced reading strategies and skills to help them build their stamina and reading muscles. WE CAN NOT wait for the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Daniela Ramos, 8th grade, and Victoria Rojas, 7th grade, for being selected from 180 student entries throughout the county for the PSL Drop Savers Poster Contest.  The City’s website states that City employees judged the posters on their message, creativity, and originality and a winner was chosen from each participating grade level.  Each winner received a $25 Walmart gift card and other prizes. The students will also be invited to attend a special presentation at a City Council Meeting where they will be recognized for their efforts. 

The annual trip to the Capitol allows students to explore Washington D.C. and the rich history of America. They participated in this trip over their spring break and visited monuments, museums, and other exciting historical attractions that gave them an inside look to the government and other iconic sights.

Jazzleyn Yrjola of Northport K-8 created a presentation for the 30th Annual History Day that was selected to represent the district at the state level later this year. National History Day is the basis for creative historical research projects. This year the theme is Debate and Diplomacy in History. Students could enter the contest in a variety of ways – from creating exhibits, websites, documentaries, performances, and research papers. District judges had to evaluate more than 80 submissions before narrowing them down to a select few to compete at the state level. The state competition will be held in Tallahassee in May. 

Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s VPK students discussed things that move, including transportation. The students identified what modes of transportation move on land. They were able to help list a couple of examples: cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, etc. The students were able to determine the similarity between each mode of transportation because they all had wheels. Next, the class listened and watched a BrainPOP Jr. snippet about transportation. They then moved into their daily centers. One center reviewed sentence writing: starting with a capital, leaving spaces, and ending with a period. They wrote the following sentence “Cars move on the road.”  … Read More

During Women’s History Month, CAST students in kindergarten, first, and second grade used their creativity to honor artistic women in innovative ways. Kindergarteners researched Frida Kahlo’s life and legacy; they observed her many beautiful self-portraits and how she always wore ornate clothing, jewelry, and flowers in her hair. They made flower crowns to match her! First-grade students created mosaic rainbow masterpieces inspired by the artist Alma Woodsey. Second grade had a fun time exploring women in the arts as well.
