Mrs. Alicia Miller’s 2nd grade students performed “Contraction Surgery.” They made two words contract into one by cutting out vowels and replacing them with band aids for apostrophes.

Once a month, Weatherbee Elementary will host guest speakers who are positive and powerful role models to come in and speak for one hour to students who will benefit from this event. We started October 30th with Dr. Perry as our first guest speaker!
Dads, Granddads and male caregivers wanted to be more involved in their students’ education, so this week Morningside Elementary dedicated two days to “Real Men Read.” This program allows men in the students’ lives to come into the classroom and read to their children and their children’s classmates.

A team of students from Ft. Pierce Magnet School of the Arts (FPMSA) is working hand in paw with the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, Inc. Dr. Norman Webb presented an institute about his Depth of Knowledge (DoK) system at the Florida Reading Association Fall Conference. Educators had an opportunity to learn about his studies regarding alignment between curriculum standards and assessment, along with an in-depth look at the application of the DoK system within the classroom. On Wednesday, October 28, the Van Duzer Foundation hosted a fund raiser for Rivers Edge Principal, Kerri Walukiewicz, at the Big Apple Pizza near IRSC. Feeling like a family reunion, people from all over the county attended, ate dinner, donated blood, tested to be a donor and participated in the multiple raffles. Manatee Academy 4th and 5th grades were enraptured by the performance of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by The Riverside Children’s Theatre professional group this week. Students and teachers have been reading the Narnia books for the last month and thought this interactive interpretation was “Awesome!”
REE hosted their annual Bingo for Books with a Halloween twist thrown in. Coupling it with a Title 1 presentation, the students then paraded by grade level across the stage in their costumes. Bingo then ensued with students winning a book every time they achieved BINGO! Our ever fabulous PTO handily decorated the cafeteria and gave out creepy treats! Everyone went home with a book and a smile!

Fort Pierce Central High School’s Criminal Justice Academy hosted its annual Crime Prevention Day on Friday, October 30, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Village Green Environmental Studies School brought storybook characters to life through a pumpkin decorating contest. Students were able to vote for their favorite pumpkin using earned Manatee Moola.
“Respect Yourself, Be Drug Free” was the Red Ribbon Week theme this year. Students at Village Green Environmental Studies School participated in several anti-drug/anti bullying activities, some of which included: creating posters, signing pledges, and a presentation by Joe the Biker.
Manatee Academy 8th grade students enjoyed lunch at a park after viewing an emotional Anne Frank exhibit sponsored by Temple Beth Am in Jupiter this week. The exhibit is part of a national tour from the Anne Frank Center, New York. Our students participated in a scavenger hunt by answering questions after reading the giant informational murals, pictures, and quotes from Anne and her family. Docents showed a 22 minute film, “The Short Life of Anne Frank.” Students were visibly moved by this documentary and accompanying exhibit.
Manatee Academy Vet Prep eighth graders and several of their parents visited Fort Pierce Westwood High School’s Veterinary Assisting Academy to tour the available programs offered through the Career and Technical Education Department. Middle school students studying animal science learned about the many benefits the attractor program has to offer. Seniors in the program guided them through several hands-on experiences that they could expect as students, such as proper dog restraints, dog grooming and the many college/career opportunities available through FFA. Every year for the last five years, Northport has united for a huge campaign to stamp out bullying. The students have listened to not only “Joe the Biker” speak, but dozens of other speakers whose message has been one of nonviolence, empowerment and anti-bullying. Students have made thousands of posters, worn orange for anti-bullying and red for drug awareness.
