Some call it the Superbowl of golf, but it’s more like the Daytona 500 in that it is the first of the four majors each season. It is The Masters, and unlike most tournaments, it is an invitational and always played at Augusta National. Therefore, the field is smaller and loaded with recent tournament winners. A Storm of Excitement at SLE

St. Lucie Elementary School students felt a storm of excitement as they learned about air masses, tornadoes, and hurricanes during a visit from Meteorologist Cris Martinez this week.  Each month, the WBPF personality visits schools in St. Lucie County to share information with students on weather and how it impacts them.  He is always a big hit!

P.B.I.S. Raffle Winners at Palm Pointe

Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in a P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) Raffle.  Students that earned rocket fuel for positive behavior selected what items they wanted to try for in the raffle. The prizes were McDonald’s Gift Cards, Walmart Gift Cards, a variety of sports balls, pizza parties for the whole class in every grade level and Kindle Fires.  The students pictured below were the winners of the Kindle Fires.  Way to go Rockets!

Parkway Spelling Bee Champs

Parkway Elementary held its annual school Spelling Bee.  First place was won by Jezabel Montero; second place by Kemya Davis; and third by Dayna Contreras.

F K Sweet Marine Biologists

Students in Mr. Donald Logue’s fifth grade class were marine biologists for the week studying sea turtles. Thanks to the Inwater Research Group’s Traveling Turtle Trunk, they measured, weighed, and inspected “captured” sea turtles for signs of distress. Then they decided to either release their sea turtle or send it to a rehabilitation facility to receive treatment based on the evidence they collected.

PSL Moose Lodge Donates to PKY

Parkway was the recipient of $600 to support the purchase of a handicap-accessible swing for our playground. This donation was generously provided by members of the Port St. Lucie Moose Lodge.  

Northport Supports Autism Speaks Walk in Tradition

Northport participated in a wonderful community event recently to support Autism Awareness. Autism Speaks Walk was held in Tradition on a beautiful Saturday morning. Northport’s team called the Puzzlers had a wonderful turnout and several of our families took part in the event. Northport has particpated for two years and the teachers and families have stated that this will definitely become an annual event with an even bigger turnout and even more support. Northport Advanced Band Represents With a Superior Rating!

Northport K-8 School Advanced Band, under the direction of Brian Hoce, received an overall Superior rating at the Music Performance Assessments held recently at Treasure Coast High School. Nearly all middle school bands were represented at the assessments from Saint Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee and Martin Counties. Parents and students were thrilled to learn of their Superior grade and realized that all their arduous work paid off with the posting of the grades. WPBF’s Weather Program Visits Mariposa Elementary

Cris Martinez’s weather program from WPBF News Channel 25 visted Mariposa Elementary’s fifth graders. The students kicked off the weather program with a rap they wrote and choreographed about how hurricanes form. Next, Mr. Martinez discussed and interactively presented how tornadoes form and how they affect us in Florida. Rebecca Sampson was interviewed by Cris Martinez; she explained how much she enjoyed his interactive presentations. It was a great learning experience for our fifth graders!

Mosaic Digital Academy Student Earns Congressional Award

Mosaic Digital Academy’s Christine Bourgoin (Grade 10) earned the bronze award at the 2016 Congressional Award ceremony held on April 3, 2016 at Palm Beach State College. Christine completed 100 volunteer hours: 50 Personal Development, 50 Personal Fitness, and a 2-day, 1 night expedition. Centennial Valedictorian Accepted Into Four Ivy League Universities

Satchel Joseph, the 2016 SLWCHS valedictorian, has been accepted into four Ivy League Universities: Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, and The University of Pennsylvania. She was also accepted by Georgia Tech and Duke. All of the institutions offered her substantial scholarships ranging to more than $70,000 per year. Satchel is leaning toward attending Princeton, which accepted a mere 6% of this year’s applicants. Here, Ms. Joseph is pictured with Centennial’s  Principal Andrea Popwell.

Furs, Fins, Feathers, and Friends for Mariposa Odyssey Team

Mariposa Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team led by Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni competed in the Palms Regional tournament in Riviera Beach, Florida.  They competed in Division 1 for problem number 5 titled “Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends.” They were one out of eight teams that decided to solve this problem. The Walking Classroom at Floresta Elementary

Fourth and Fifth Grade students in 21st CCLC received donated “Walk-Its” from The Walking Classroom. Students walk three times per week, while listening to content related pod-casts. Students track their heart rate and total steps. Floresta students LOVE getting fit while learning!

UF USDA Visits Frances K. Sweet
