Through the creation of a class garden, Ms. White, Mrs. Hines, and the classroom volunteer Mrs. Snyder, led their VPK students through a multi-sensory learning experience with outcomes that connected both school and home environments. By utilizing the senses of touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing as well as drawing on background knowledge, the students were fully engaged in all steps of the planting and growing process. As a result, all of the students reaped an abundant harvest of green beans that they were able to take home and share with their families.    

Friday, January 8, 2016, FPW hosted its first Poetry Slam. This slam was an audition for the Louder Than A Bomb Poetry Slam Competition that will be held in April 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The judges selected 10 students to compete. They will meet once a week after school to learn how to write and perform their poetry.

Ms. Higgin’s and Mrs. Durkee’s Saint Lucie West Centennial Medical Academy students participated in a mock disaster drill at Tradition Medical Center and Martin Emergency at St. Lucie West. They were requested to participate as victims —  all 24 went to Tradition Medical Center first to be “moulaged” by specialized makeup volunteers. Twelve of the students stayed at Tradition Medical Center in the Emergency Room, the other 12 were transported to Martin Emergency at St. Lucie West. Every student was given a script to memorize. Mrs. Stacey Johnson was awarded a $100.00 classroom grant from the Retired Florida Education Association.  Mrs. Barbara Kaste presented the award which will be  used to  purchase rocket engines for building model rockets from recycled materials with students in the Challenge Program. Prince Edouard, Vice-President of the National Honor Society at SLWCHS, has been accepted by Cornell University in New York. Cornell, a prestigious Ivy League university, has an excellent program in chemistry and chemical biology, which Prince has chosen for his major. He plans to attend both medical and graduate school ultimately leading to a position as a research scientist with a pharmaceutical company.

More than 120 Health Science 1, 10th and 11th grade students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School learned Hands-Only CPR this week. These students were taught by Mary Higgins’ First Responder students. First Responder classes are available to students who have completed the Allied Health Program as a senior elective. First Responder students prepare for careers in emergency medicine by becoming CPR certified as Health Care Professionals, completing web based classroom instruction and skills in advanced first aid techniques, followed by a shadowing opportunity at various St. Lucie County Fire stations. Northport is pleased to present our 2015-2016 middle grades Science Fair in the school media center. The Science Fair, under the direction of Dr. Laura Woodworth and a cadre of science instructors, are offering students an opportunity to stimulate out of the box problem solving. Students are encouraged and guided through the use of STEaM processes. Students moved about the media center reviewing projects and using check sheets to ensure that displays presented required data and followed correct procedures. Morningside’s STARS were celebrated Monday, January 4, 2016, with a breakfast, MSE shirt, and certificate. Our School Related Employee of the Year is Candida Castrillo, executive secretary.  The Distinguished Minority Teacher is Stacey McColley, kindergarten teacher, and our Teacher of the Year is Coach Ryan Prue, PE teacher. Friends of Morningside Elementary hosted a get-together to celebrate the season!

   Students in K-5 with no referrals for the second nine weeks danced and enjoyed each other’s company at the second annual PBIS in-school dance.

Frances K. Sweet’s student council hosted their annual Breakfast with Santa for the students and their families. More than 50 families ate breakfast, made crafts, and met Santa. Pictured are the student council representatives, Mr. Gary Bushby, and of course Santa.

Our own Jayden is a 6-year-old 1st grader at Mosaic Digital Academy who took 3rd place in K12, inc’s 10th Annual Art Contest. Jayden’s art project, “Journey to the Moon,” was created with paper, cardboard, glue, glitter, paint, stickers, number stencils, cut outs and tissue paper. Jayden enjoyed splattering paint all over the cardboard to create the stars…it was messy, fun and effective. Jayden has taken a recent interest in the moon and stars, leading us to explore the decade of the 1960’s when the first trip to the moon was made. REE’s 4th & 5th Grade Choir showed off their incredible talents during their annual Christmas performance! Solos, duets, dancing and even a hula hoop presentation kicked off the night followed by the choir performing multiple Christmas favorites. Parents brought treats galore for everyone in attendance.  

Wonderful job to the Northstar STEaM students, their instructor, Christine Nurse, and ESE Chairpersons Sherri Yacovino and De Green for their great work with our ESE students. The excitement was palpable as students learned new and exciting hands-on information. Northstars STEaM Team students provided a laser and photonics hands-on lab for our wonderful exceptional students. The students designed and created an authentic triangulated laser and photonics security system.
