As part of Fairlawn Elementary’s ongoing effort to increase word recognition among our students, students and staff paraded through the school halls dressed as a host of costumed words. Families and friends laughed, applauded, and were amazed by our students’ ingenuity! From pond to precipitation, humble to boastful, students represented words from science, social studies, math, language arts and character education curriculum. The entire school at Floresta Elementary took part in the first monthly STEAM activity. K-2 discovered how to blow a piece of popcorn into a bottle. 3-5 designed and built a container that would hold 293 pieces of popcorn using 10 pieces to estimate by. Fun was had by all!
The students in Mrs. Irby’s Kindergarten class celebrated the 100th day of school with fun 100th day activities. Students counted ten groups of ten pictures and glued them on strips to make hats, created eye glasses with 100 pieces, read 100th day books, sorted 100 words, and participated in many other activities!
SLW Centennial Criminal Justice students participated in a K-9 demonstration that was sponsored by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department.
In recognition of Multicultural Children’s Book Day, the beginning Spanish class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition welcomed award winning local author Maritza Mejia. Mrs. Mejia read her book Vanilla and Chocolate/Vainilla y Chocolate. Multicultural Children’s Book Day has as its mission not only to raise awareness for children’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these books into classrooms and libraries.
Recently at the Florida Music Educators convention in Tampa the Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition Band was given the state enrollment award. This award recognized them for achieving over 43 percent of the 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in a music course. This award will be held for three years. Mrs. Janette Champagne, Fairlawn’s Food Service Manager, conducted a pizza-making lesson with all of the second grade students. The lesson was about farm to table (peppers, fresh tomatoes, pineapple) and how to follow steps in a technical procedure. Students enjoyed creating their own pizzas.
In an effort to better engage families this school year, Parkway Elementary, of St. Lucie County Schools hosted a family literacy workshop, called REaD Carpet Ready. This fun, interactive family workshop engaged K-5 parents and their children in a 1.5-hour, red-carpet-themed training program. Parents learned easy-to-implement reading strategies to support their child’s literacy development at home. REaD Carpet Ready workshop allowed families to enter the world of Hollywood celebrities, complete with red carpet, paparazzi and voting on nominees for best-dressed “star”, all while learning how to incorporate an extra 20 minutes of reading into their busy lives. Parkway Elementary was honored to participate in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in Fort Pierce by participating in the parade.
Over 300 students, parents, police officers and ROTC members participated in CSI night at MSE. The students “scientifically” tested clues (blood, finger prints, PH, hair, etc.) to find out who stole the candy jar. Mr. Graff was the thief! Thank you, Mrs. Jennings, for another successful CSI night!
For the 5 weeks preceding the FSA Writing Assessment, students in grades 4 and 5 are eligible to enter weekly drawing if they show improvement on their writing score from the previous week. Dorothy in Wonderland, The Musical is the first full drama production performed at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition. What an amazing job the cast and crew did. The drama class, under the direction of Mrs. Melanie Larsen, worked very hard getting ready for this show and it definitely paid off. The cast posed for a picture just before the opening performance. Chris Norton, motivational speaker, delivered an enlightening and powerful message to the athletes of St. Lucie West Centennial High School on Saturday evening. In addition, Centennial’s own former Mississippi State standout and NFL linebacker, Jamar Chaney, spoke with the athletes. Jamar shared a message of resilience and of how his efforts, attitude, and faith paved the way for his success. This was a free event and also served as a second semester kick-off for Project EAGLE and F.C.A.
Northport K-8 School held their annual Spelling Bee recently in the school media center. Students from grades four through eight who won their classroom spelling bees were able to move forward and participate in the school based spelling bee. Parent attendance was plentiful and each spelling bee participant was able to bring one student guest from their class. Students moved through six rounds with Americorp Tutor Azzam Abdur-Rahman calling the words and tutors Barbara Despinos and Tessa Falatovich serving as judges. The SLWK-8 4th Grade students recently took a field trip to Ft. Christmas and Alligator World. The students learned about how pioneers lived in early Florida and were able to grind corn and churn butter. Then they traveled to Alligator World where they observed animals in their natural habitats and explored the tools used by native Americans and settlers to survive in Florida.
Congratulations to Gaines Academy students: Lorena Ramirez-Garcia, Sedre Wright, Brandon Davis, and Nira Troublefield for being selected to the Indian River State College’s Four County Honor Band. The Four County Honor Band is comprised of students from St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee Counties. These students will spend roughly 15 hours over the course of three days in rehearsal with guest clinician Dr. Shelby Chipman, Associate Professor of Music at Florida A&M University, and perform a concert at the end of the clinic.
On Friday, January 15, fourth grade students attended a presentation by the Port Saint Lucie Botanical Gardens and the Keep Port Saint Lucie Beautiful about Arbor Day and the Fourth Grade Foresters Program. Students learned about growing a Sabal Palm and received their own Sabal Palm to take and plant at home. The trees were generously donated by Keep Port Saint Lucie Beautiful and Waste Pro.
Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition would like to thank all the students and staff who donated the 850 plus teddy bears for the Teddies for Tots Drive. This project was done during Kindness Week. The bears were donated to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department, and Sheriff Mascara came out to Palm Pointe to pick up all the bears. On Monday, January 18, 2016, students and staff at St. Lucie Elementary honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in the MLK Parade. The parade commemorates the life of civil rights leader and icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students and staff participated in the Parade with signs in hand to celebrate in remembrance of his outstanding achievements and how they changed the course of history. SLE students continue to be active in their community and strive to maintain Dr. King’s vision.
