Manatee Academy students in Ms. Shaver’s 1st period Civics class won first place in the state finals of the Project Citizen for their portfolio. Additionally, they won 2nd place for the oral competition which was scored on their presentation and question responses. Representatives from Ms. Shaver’s class participated in the state finals of Project Citizen on May 20th. Students presented their project to a panel of two different sets of judges comprised of Nova faculty, the League of Women Voters, and Florida Law Related Association staff. Mr. Kurt Wallach, a Holocaust survivor, visited Fort Pierce Westwood High School for a presentation for the junior class. He told his personal story and shared accounts and artifacts of his time in Nazi Germany. Mr. Wallach followed with taking questions from our student body. This was a somber, eye opening, once in a lifetime experience for our school and we are grateful for this opportunity. A sincere thank you goes out to one of our history teacher, Ms. Tara Clark, for organizing this for our students and faculty.

On Wednesday, May 18, a group of graduating seniors from St. Lucie West Centennial High School walked through the halls of Manatee Academy for the first ever high school clap out. Each year our 8th grade students participate in a clap out on their way to their middle school graduation ceremonies but this was the first time with high school seniors. Fourth graders at Savanna Ridge Elementary took part in a math fluency fact challenge.  Those who met the math fluency expectations in each class got to eat their lunch outside with the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Melrose, and were treated to cupcakes.  Way to go fourth grade math superstars!

During the months of April and May, Mariposa students have been writing and publishing their own books as a part of the annual celebration of writers — Young Authors. Students from grades kindergarten to fifth wrote, illustrated, edited, and published original stories. These books were shared and celebrated through several classroom and school-wide activities. Four writers were chosen to represent Mariposa at the Young Authors Celebration. “A Walk to Remember” is a reflective celebration for Mrs. Nardi Routten’s students at F. K. Sweet Elementary. Parents, students, and staff gather for this annual tribute to the students and their success journey.

FHSAA State Champion!! On Friday May 6th, Caleb Pottorff of Lincoln Park Academy won the 3200 meter run at the State Championship event  in Bradenton. On Saturday May 7th, Caleb also ran the 1600 meter run and finished second. Congratulations to Caleb and his coaches for becoming a State Champion.

The 2016 Law Day Art Contest was open to all St. Lucie County students. The theme, Miranda: More than Words,  encouraged students to explore the protections afforded to all by the U.S. Constitution, learn how these rights are protected by the courts, and determine why they are essential to our liberty. This commemorated the 50th anniversary of the case, Miranda vs. Arizona. Students discussed the Supreme Court case and the importance of the Miranda Warning. Mrs. Furtah’s first grade students at APF enjoyed a visit from the Manatee Center. The portable touch tank provided a hands-on approach to learn about plant and animal life in the ocean!

BRAVO to Mrs. Martinkovic, REE’s Music Teacher, and the entire cast and crew of The Lion King Kids production!!! Everyone did an amazing job. You could feel the love and outright fun they were having!!! With parents and staff coming together to bring their students to rehearsals, sew costumes, make and paint props, paint faces, volunteer during the shows, and support the production wholeheartedly – it was a true school-wide event. The Eagles Nest Preschool is the recipient of $1000 grant awarded by Wells Fargo Bank. Wells Fargo’s Community Connection Grant Program is an annual program where each of the company’s retail banking stores and Business Banking teams explore the needs of their local communities and select a nonprofit organization or school to receive a $1,000 grant.  This year, Wells Fargo will award more than $600,000 in grants to 600-plus nonprofit organizations and schools throughout Florida. Students in all grades at WCE chipped in their quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies to help the charitable organization (The March of Dimes). The March of Dimes uses funds collected to fund research to help prevent premature births. We are so proud of all who contributed!

Each year, every Northport student participates in the Young Author’s program. The program is a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate that each can use the complete writing process effectively. Writing and editing the books and then publishing the final, revised book is a commitment to engaged learning. The Young Author’s writing process focuses directly on student curriculum for all grade levels in English/Language Arts and reading. Standards are applied to student organization, draft, reflection, revision, correction and then finally, publication and presentation. SLWCHS HOSA Chapter is thrilled to announce the results of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising for the 2015-2016 school year has been posted.  LLS is the HOSA National Service Project and all HOSA chapters participate in raising funds and raising awareness each year for the chosen charity. During this year’s Student Series Programs, nearly 26,000 schools—-a quarter of all schools across the country—engaged in meaningful service, leadership and helped save lives!
