Lisa Delatorre came up with a fun project for Mrs. Auciello’s 1st grade class! She brought the supplies for the students to create and use a drawing robot, or “doodle bot.” The students had a blast putting these together and watching the cool designs they could make! Nicolas Suarez, a St. Lucie Public Schools high school student and Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) youth advocate, was named the South Region Youth Advocate of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. This is one of the highest awards among the country’s top youth advocates working against tobacco. Nicolas was honored in Washington, D.C. on May 10 along with three U.S. regional winners, a group winner, and a national winner. Kailey McKnight tried out for Team USA Volleyball. Tryouts were held in 32 cities across the United States, and this Centennial Eagle was one of fifty-five girls selected to move to the next level of competition. Kailey will compete with the best this summer as part of USA Volleyball HP (High Performance) A1 National Select Training Team. We are very excited and proud of Kailey. Congratulations Kailey!    

The 2017 “Fresh from Florida” Student Chef Cook-Off champions announcement from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services brought cheers from students and staff at Fort Pierce Westwood High School.  ProStart student Sheldon Riley placed second with his Southwestern Chicken and Orzo Salad. The competition included students in grades nine through 12 from across the state who were challenged to prepare original dishes featuring at least one Florida-grown fruit or vegetable for a panel of judges. Congratulations to all of the early childhood students who passed their 40-hour DCF statewide training course for all childcare workers in the Florida. Mrs. Wester and Mrs. Serynek took 60 students to IRSC on May 9 to take this test.  As a result of passing this exam, students also have an opportunity to work with young children in the Eagles Nest Preschool on the campus of SLW Centennial High School.  This is an excellent CTE program in our county providing great opportunities for our students.  

Many, many thanks to First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie on Prima Vista Blvd. from the entire Northport community. The children are in awe of all the 1,005 books, the many choices of books, and the idea of starting their summer reading. You have done a magical and wonderful thing for all the children. It was a wonderful morning of real learning and listening when James English visited select students at Northport. Students from Boys to Men and Girls to Women clubs learned a lot about how to deal with the really stressful events that happen in their lives without turning to drug, alcohol and other things that cause them to bring pain to themselves. Learning how to deal with emotions is paramount to being a healthy student ready to learn. Some kids just have too many stressors for their young minds to handle and turn to unhealthy outlets. For 38 years, the Florida Council on Economic Education (FCEE) has recognized Florida’s most outstanding teachers for their creativity in presenting lessons in economics, personal finance, and entrepreneurship. Open to all K-12 teachers, the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Economics is a celebration of best practices and a way of acknowledging the innovation that teachers bring to the classroom. Frances K. Sweet is proud to have Mrs. Alice Parks win 1st Place in the Econ 101 Category.  

Into the Woods, Jr. will be shown at the Southport Middle School cafetorium to the public on Friday, May 26th, 2017 at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) and Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at 2:30pm (doors open at 2:00pm). Tickets will cost $6.00. Southport Middle School is located at 2420 SE Morningside Blvd. behind the Morningside Library.  

At Mariposa Elementary, Ms. Humphrey‘s second grade class recently created informational books on Antarctica and Emperor Penguins. The students created 3-dimensional penguins with baby chicks and a penguin rookery. During the month of May, Northport celebrates Better Speech and Hearing month.  We are so thankful for our very own speech and language therapists, Jennifer Carey and Nicole Sedan.  Speech and Language therapists are some of the unsung heroes that make a school a successful learning environment. School based Speech and Language Therapy addresses sound articulations, stuttering issues, reading comprehension, vocabulary, syntax problems as well as pragmatic issues such as eye contact, turn-taking and coping strategies and many other integral aspects of speech and hearing. Northport K-8 School has been the fortunate recipient of the assistance and support of the First United Methodist Church of Port Saint Lucie.  The church and the school have joined mission statements and worked together for the good of the children of Northport and to benefit the community.  Northport is a Title I school with a 100% free lunch population.  The support and good will from church members has been phenomenal and has truly brought community services directly into the school.  Not only have church volunteers helped out in classrooms, but they have also kick-started the Northport Summer Reading Program. The Fort Pierce Branch Library’s ArtSpace features works by students from Fort Pierce Central High School on display during May. Showcasing two-dimensional works from students, several of these pieces were part of their senior portfolio. Inspired by contemporary and classical artists, the students’ work experiments with various lines, values and movements, creating incredibly intricate designs and sophisticated compositions. The Fort Pierce Branch Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Fridays from          9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Jaguar Battalion Field Day   Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion conducted their own field day on May 6, 2017. The JROTC unit uses field day as a way to reward the cadets for their hard work and achievements, as well as, to use the teamwork and leadership skills they learned in the program. Activities consist of ultimate Jag – a form of no tackle football, soccer, kickball, dodge ball, Tug O’ War and pedal car races. The pedal car race was our new event this year. Fort Pierce Westwood’s Veterinary Tech program welcomes CORE Contents Restoration’s partnership and support.  The company’s generous donation of supplies will support various activities within the Veterinary Tech program and will contribute to the fund raising efforts of an anesthesia machine. This purchase will help achieve the goal of opening a surgery center on campus to expand student opportunities for learning and growth.
